DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (2024–2025) (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

He didn't got sealed, he was killed and then needed to go talk to the Axolotl to be resurrected

If you wish to see how much he suffered on his death you can read this
I see, that's what the spin offs and books say, correct? I admit I only watched the show as a kid, just by it, people were saying he was temporarily defeated and would return in the future, that he wasn't dead dead, just sealed, petrified, etc.

IDK, who can actually get past her Intangibility?

It's something like regular ghosts, cyberspace ghosts, & Sage is more intangible than those, so she's like, on a 3rd layer of intangibility?
I haven’t actually seen reasoning for Sage being more intangible than CS ghosts, so rn it’s just Sage being relative to them

He's had a few different fates, before the book therapy as I mentioned he suffered a GER Death Loop where he had to play out the entire series over and over in a box set

Yeah, according to The Book of Bill he actually died, got "ressurected" by the Axolotl and then sent to the Theraprism

As mentioned above by Blizzard, the original fate destined to him was a time loop

Coulda' sworn there was something on the topic a few pages back.
If that's the case, it's only 2 layers, no?

Boos can phase through walls & other stuff, IIRC, even when not using their Intangibility, & other characters can harm Boos, so that's 1 layer.
When they do go "invisible", most things other than Superguards (In TTYD.) & the Star Beam can't affect them, so that's a 2nd layer.
Same for Magikoopa-granted Intangibility, IIRC, as shown by Duplighosts (Which copy other physical attributes, like being electric or explosive.) copying Lady Bow & then being turned Intangible by a Gray Magikoopa being able to be made tangible again via the Star Beam.

Star Rod MIGHT be able to undo it, but the Star Beam is done by the Star Spirits who created/oversaw the Star Rod, & the Star Rod has an anti-feat of being unable to hit Mario & Lady Bow when Bow uses Outta Sight.
This limitation could be Game Mechanics, though; The only instances of breaking Intangibility, other than the Star Beam, which has plot-related reasons for removing buffs, are all player-favoring, in a game that heavily favors the player. (Like player's side always getting the 1st turn, for example.)

& Repel Gel offers the same Intangibility that the Star Rod, which can grant wishes & grant Bowser Invulnerability the Star Beam can't negate until it's upgraded to the Peach Beam.
(Though, it can negate base Bowser's Star Rod Invulnerability; It's after she uses the power up machine arena thingy that the Invulnerability becomes too much for the Star Beam to negate.)
So it could just be devs wanted player-favoring Invulnerable Intangibility, & game mechanics were made in service to that, & the Star Rod SHOULD be able to Negate 2-layer Intangibility, since it can grant Invulnerability that can't be negated by something that CAN Negate 2-layer Intangibility.

Plus, the Star Rod's wave attack is able to negate every other buff, IIRC, like Charged Status, Petrification (Maybe?), Cloud Nine & Water Block, so it's a little weird this wish-granting thing would only be stopped by an "Invisible"/Intangible status, when its creators (The Star Spirits.) can get around that. (Against Bowser's Star Rod without his power-up machine, anyway.)

I'm unsure. What do you all think?

Shao Kahn?
More like Sham Kahn.
They might say the Boos are a counter.
Maybe. There's also the question of if Mario has any in cyberspace or such stuff.
Most I can remember AtM is the ending to a MP8 Mini-Game where the Mini-Game's ending has a character left trapped in a computer.

There's also the Boo's Sheet item (Grants Invisible/Intangible status.), & the Spite Pouch which deals half the damage taken as counterattacks against Direct Attacks.
The former.... Well, Invisible/Intangible can't be hit, even by those that also have the status, AFAIK. Counterattacks ignore this.

Also, I'm realizing that funnily enough, Mario has tools Bowser doesn't here, because in TTYD, the Crystal Stars can hit "Invisible"/Intangible opponents, including intangible Boos, Dark Boos & those they grant it, too.

IDK if Star Spirit Powers can affect Invisible/Intangible foes, though.
In theory, Star Storm, Chill Out & or Up, Up & Away might work.

But even if they do, Bowser only "had" the Star Spirits in that he kidnapped them & sent his minions to oversee them.
Mario's use of Star Spirit Powers is literally through prayer & summoning. Unless Bowser gets the kidnapped Star Spirits & mind controls them or something AND they can hit Intangible....

Anyone wanna go down to post-Chapter 7 Crystal Palace & try Star Storming some enemies Gray Magikoopas Intangible'd up?

& while the Crystal Stars are already known to be able to bypass Intangibility, Bowser probably has even less chance of getting them, since the closest he came to having ANY was:

1. Fighting Mario. (& losing. Twice.)
2. Going to Rawk Hawk's Secret Underground Training Room to steal the Gold Crystal Star from Rawk Hawk's Champion's Belt, only for it to get knocked off its display on the wall, fall to the ground & break, because it's a fake.
3. Going to Poshley Sanctum and stealing a SECOND fake Crystal Star, because the real Crystal Star is in a secret second version of Poshley Sanctum with much worse lighting & lots of Dark Boos that you enter by going into a background painting of the building itself, inside the building.
Also, it was technically the third fake Crystal Star; The museum's curator, Pennington had to replace Poshley Sanctum's original fake because Beldam, Marilyn & Doopliss stole the first fake, & so Pennington had to replace it for public display.

But hey, if he had actually gotten the real Garnet Star, maybe Bowser could try Showstopper's Death Manipulation mechanics on Sage & company, lol.

Boos are not a counter for sage lol, there should be an overwhelming power difference between them
I mean, Boos are more relevant for the basis of what level of Intangibility they grant & thus what other Mario series characters can affect.
I'm confident Sage could solo most, if not every Boo.
(Also Magikoopas (PM64 & TTYD.), Kammy included, can grant it (Kammy only shows she can in TTYD.), though IDK if she can/does grant it to Bowser.)

Oh look yet another game with an unassuming, simple premise yet gets all Lovecraftian too.
Metal Sonic is kind of cooler in concept than he is in practice (the Sonic OVA, Heroes, and IDW being the exceptions to this)
^This, he went from "show me what you made of" to "I'm made of Jobberium" quite quickly tbh.

On another note:

This reminds me - recently (around the same time I was editing the Egil vs Carol trailer (?)), I was asked by @JoshDoshMosh what I thought of Starscream vs Metal face (not the first time I've been asked by someone about said MU, but I digress). The thing is, what with Mumkhar ultimately being not quite a major enough character to constitute thorough MU spreads, I brainstormed a scenario for Egil vs Carol (in other words, an army fight) where the Faces (Metal Face, Xord and Jade Face specifically) fought the Autoscorers - and it got me thinking (with Sage as the example): Does this strictly disqualify those implicated as 'part of the army' so to speak from having their own MUs later down the line?

I mean I'm aware back in S1 we had Zitz vs Leonardo right after the TMNT Battle Royale... but again, that was S1. A lot has changed since then, so I'm not sure if there's some unwritten rule these days disqualifying it that came about as a result of S1's Lovecraftian lack of a season structure.

Sage is also part of Cyberspace which is type 2 information. You need NPI that can interact with type 2 information to hit her (Death Battle will ignore this).

Is there an article here that explains the different types of information and layers of intangibility?

There's a CRT going on just now, and there's the Cyberspace blog as well
