Touhou Discussion Thread 3 ⌈Eternal Fantasy Edition⌋

Perfect Cherry Blossom is one of the best games to start with, in my opinion. It's fairly easy compared to other games in the series, and is early enough in the series for you to not to know anything about Touhou going in. It also helps that the story isn't too complex.
I'll keep that in mind, though it will feel sort of odd to me due to the fact I like going through things in order for a series (if they have one)

Touhou 1-5 are kinda separated from the main series in terms of characters and story. Touhou 6 is technically a fine starting point as well, but as a game it's a bit harder than 7, and it's not like Touhou has a good starting point anyways; No matter what you go with, there's gonna be a bit of a learning curve.

Blog creation is going well.

(none of the text here has anything to do with powerscaling)

Been working on a variety of verse power pages recently, and I gotta say, it's really funny how spell cards are by far the single most busted verse mechanic. Over 50 separate abilities, including no less than 3 other extremely busted verse mechanics. Never really took note of how cracked some of these abilities are before now.

I hope that many of these pages contain refutations to many of the debunks that are popularly made, it would be perfect. Good luck on your work btw

Maybe, depends on if I can work them into whatever I have planned. The spell card verse power page has a section dedicated to explaining why scaling still works under the SCR (shown below, just a rough draft typed up based on what I could remember off the top of my head in a couple of minutes).
ra45Gyg.png

The wall of text regarding youkai lore I shared above is also a draft typed up in a few minutes using what I already knew and nothing else. No doubt it'll be even longer once I start doing additional research to flesh things out.

Unrelated, but revisions are being slowed down by an unexpected source - My mouse is busted as hell and is unable to select text properly (stg it takes like 5 minutes to highlight one sentence), so things are gonna be a bit slower moving until I get that resolved.

Also, I've noticed a disturbing trend where the walls of text I write, even just the drafts that are done with minimal references, somehow end up being just as long if not longer than the Touhou wiki's pages on a topic. The Touhou wiki's entire page on spell cards is about 1000 words long. My description of spell cards, even excluding all the powerscaler nonsense, is somehow 1700 words long. What the hell are they even doing over there?
this is also ignoring how a lot of what they say is just irrelevant or straight up misinformation lol

If I had a nickel for everytime I got trapped by the idea of a possible Grimsokyo considering some details I heard, it would be likely 4 or 5.

Moderate amount, but rather it not have happened twice at all-.

BUY TOUHOU ACE SHOWDOWN!!!
That's one of the few things I know I'm buying for sure! I'm actually planning to buy a lot from the same artist lol

Oh hey, this thread exists. Look at my 18 EX clear...

14 EX clear with MarisaB is on the chopping block next. 8 Lunatic is also in progress Eiren can burn in hell

Hell yes, great job.
also you better take back what you said about Eirin or else......

Hecatia>>Reimu right??
It isn't really clear. Hecc was said to be the strongest at the time of her release, thanks to a WoG statement. But beyond the EX stage and a few spin-off material, we don't really have much in-depth knowledge for a solid interpretation beyond what ZUN has said. You could, maybe, reason it through sealing Lunarians in the Dream World-- which would possibly (if you wanna go that far) include beings like Yorihime and Toyohime-- but we also don't know how the latter two were involved in LoLK either. Okina seemed to acknowledge Hecc's power in Grimoire of Usami (and even drooled over Junko..), but there's not much else to go on.

The Vengeful Spirits (Mizuchi, Junko) and whatever the hell Keiki is are decent competitors imo. A lot of characters, including Reimu, couldn't really harm Yuuma either in Sunken Fossil World-- save for Flandre.

You mean, in terms of AP or literally all of if.
At the time, in terms of "all of it", yes.

Now with recent scans and book material? You could reason at or above a Sage's level imo (blame Okina's shenanigans)

There are several things we can infer from the WoG interview; "She's completely past the level of anyone in Gensokyo or the Lunar Capital", and "Though she's different from oni, she's just a normal goddess of Hell. In terms of status she's absolutely higher than Eiki." [ Interview here ]

I think being of a higher status than Eiki is indiciative enough of AP/Power, for what it's worth. Okina also seems to acknowledge her to a noteble degree in Grimoire of Usami... to an extent where I think ZUN was actually drunk when he wrote it... yuri

Touhoufest nears... in the meantime, have a Suku pic (they will be accompanying me on the long and arduous journey)
aAYZO4G.jpeg

There will be many more Suku pics to come when I get to California.

I'M BAAAAAACK

Gonna post a bunch of pics from Touhoufest and the accompanying trip below, then give my thoughts on the whole experience~
uY9pS3z.jpeg

First and foremost, my Marisa suku wouldn't let me leave the house (I only had room for the Mokou, Keine, and Reisen sukus)

jkN4Of4.jpeg

gxwOffl.jpeg

Going through the airport and checking into my hotel was definitely the most difficult and boring part, but at least I got some more suku pics out of the whole affair.

UFNA4L8.jpeg

Cirno was there!

Ck0eJzk.jpeg

Tragically, she did not survive.

Eiki was NOT driving responsibly!!!!!!

Byu8bTK.jpeg

Went to the mall with oomfs and encountered a wild skibidi.

5tAWjlh.jpeg

Went to Denny's with another group of oomfs and one of them drew Keine for me!!!!!!!!

Chen was there on day 1 honking at people.

yfLqb3K.jpeg

There were two game halls, one with official games/tournaments (oomf won the AoCF tourney, fucking based), and the other with a bunch of fangames. This cardboard cutout was from the demo of Fujiwara Phoenix, which had a pretty fun demo even if the game has a long way to go. Also got a very cute print from that table!

QGwUuOY.jpeg

Speaking of cardboard cutouts, there was also. This.

iR4f9LE.jpeg

Another sukusuku pic + cosplayers (one of which is an oomf of mine)

Ov11TkA.jpeg

I got to hold Seiga!!! It was a really well made custom plush, I'm strongly considering commissioning the artist for some custom Mokou/Keine plushes.

wZV2Kw3.jpeg

Artist alley was ******* packed all day both days, made it really hard to get a good look at some of the things I was interested it. Still a lot of cool stuff on display, though I'm hoping they're able to get a slightly bigger venue for next year.

There was a Junko cosplayer with two Reisens on a leash (seen here with only a single Reisen). Strong contender for cosplay of the year ngl

SPEAKING OF COSPLAY, SHOUT OUT TO MY GOAT GENJI

q3MwmRv.jpeg

x1EgWFm.jpeg

Oomf cosplayed Marisa for day 2 (she was Murasa for day 1). Marisa and Marisa were also there!

gwGqH9e.jpeg

Everything I bought/won in the giveaways! Not too bad, considering I was working on a tight budget this year (the extra copy of Ace Showdown and the Marisa poster belong to @Kirbonic_Pikmin, just as soon as I can figure out how to mail them to him).

The closing ceremony! They played Bad Apple at the very end and it was VERY fun.

I'm running out of space, but I'll make a separate post for the cosplay contest stuff + everything else!

  • There was a lot of variety in cosplay, which was kind of surprising. Most of the 19 cast was there, there were a fair number of PC-98 cosplayers, and just generally a good spread of characters from across the series. Super happy it wasn't EoSD-centric lol
  • Day two had a Kanako handing out free donuts and a bunch of Meiling cosplayers handing out free Little Caesar's (was actually pretty good ngl).
  • TAMUSIC's concert was absolutely incredible, he absolutely killed it. Kinda wish I got an autograph but the line was long as hell lmao (also, here's Yukari and Yuyuko going ham)
  • I can't upload the recording here, but Renko (the founder of ORANGE★JAM and lyricist for FELT) performed live not long after the cosplay contest. It was absolutely incredible, and hearing Falling in Love Again live made me genuinely emotional because I fucking love that song.
  • The closing ceremony ran into some audio issues before a Reimu cosplayer generously lent their wifi, lmao
  • I was stuck in Airport Hell for a grand total of 18 hours.
  • Goes without saying that I met a ton of close friends in the community for the first time (IRL, at least), which was extremely surreal. Kind of anxiety inducing but I'm really glad I was able to meet with everyone I was planning to (and a few people I wasn't planning to meet, either!).
  • I wasn't here for this but apparently there was a wrestling tournament???
  • Also wasn't here for the day 1 concert (RIP) but here's an excerpt from that!
  • I ALSO MISSED THE ILLEGAL TAILGATE, I WANTED A FREE BURGER GRAHHHHHH
  • SOMEONE GOT PROPOSED TO?????????
  • THERE WAS A MAJIMA COSPLAYER WITH A MOKOU FUMO AND IM GENUINELY PISSED I FORGOT TO TAKE A PHOTO BECAUSE IT WOULD'VE BEEN PERFECT WITH MY USERNAME
  • Reisen on Reisen violence.
  • Got to watch oomf speedrun Luna Nights for a bit, which was fun.
  • Cirno dies (for real this time)
  • Here's a recording of the tail end of the closing ceremony. In the first video, you can see me literally sprinting across the stage to make it in time, which was worth it in the end. Here's hoping I get to be on stage again next year!
  • Next Touhoufest is June 14-15 2025, and I WILL BE THERE NO MATTER WHAT!!!!!!!!!

This isn't even everything!!!!! I could post about this shit all day!!!!!!

Final Thoughts:

It's still kind of surreal knowing I even got to go at all, to be honest. Never flown anywhere by myself, let alone to the other side of the country, so there was a lot of anxiety going in. But even just getting to be near some of my closest friends in this community, some of whom I've known for years, assuaged those fears and I was able to enjoy the rest of the con without much issue. Even just wandering the premises and looking at all the cool art and cosplays on display just, made me feel extraordinarily happy in a way I don't recall feeling in a long time. I've spoken a lot about how much I love Touhou, but actually going to Touhoufest and indulging in that love firsthand was just... something else entirely. I feel like a lot of social anxiety and unfounded fears about the future have just been obliterated. I know it seems kind of silly to say that, but then again, that's just an extension of the chuunibyou ideology that already changed my life once before. I was genuinely crying a little bit on the way back to the hotel after the closing ceremony, because I was so overwhelmed with feelings of love for this series, for the community, and for every little change my life has undergone because of Touhou. Beyond that more interpersonal meaning, though, the event itself was just fun as hell, and I have nothing but respect for the organizers for keeping things orderly and making Touhoufest the best it can possibly be (though it'd be even better if they somehow got ZUN to fly out to LA next year...). I'll definitely be going back next June, and the year after that, and for as long as Touhoufest continues. 10/10 experience, no notes.

But honestly? After multiple flights, jet lag, me discovering that I somehow get vertigo now despite not doing so as a kid, and hours upon hours of wandering through LAX, I'm really glad to be back home lol

I'm going to bed.

You are really lucky... ahhh... i wish i had Ace Showdown and buy many things from tohofest

I feel like such a fucking dumbass rn because I somehow overlooked that the Dragon God has not one, but TWO statements that would objectively scale him to the entire cosmology. Literally just "yeah man he created everything in existence", so uh

Yall can look forward to 2-B at minimum, because it's damn near undeniable that the top tiers scale to the whole cosmology.

i was going to ask you why DG doesn't scale to the entire cosmology but was too scared

what? which statement?

New Hifuu CD is almost upon us. As excited as I am for the possibility of Yukari and Maribel's connection being revealed, I'm also kind of dreading it because of how it'll impact the revisions. I might even have to push out Yukari's reworked profile early.
