Information about upcoming advertisements in this forum

Just got this ad recently, when I clicked it (cus my friend asked me to do that) this game didn't appear at all lol, totally click bait

Hello.

This is just a note from my friend who owns this forum about that we are currently still experimenting with how to set up the advertisements so they can almost cover his costs for maintaining this place in the long run.

It seems like we will currently try to apply the system that regular members will see 3 advertisements per page, one at the top, one in the middle, and one at the bottom, visitors will see 5 or 6 advertisements per page, and staff members will maybe see none, but that is uncertain as of yet.

We considered a low fee paying option for members to get rid of ads and support this community, but I thought that was unrealistic, since it would likely mean that they would have to reveal their identities IRL.

Also, can somebody write a good summary of the relevant issues that you all have with our current advertisements please? Otherwise we will not be able to modify them properly.

Ads shown during the middle of threads, as they are too intrusive and should not be placed there, at least for members.

There shouldn't be any ads that are inappropriate. For example, I literally just got one here.

Indeed, it seems like the issue is just that the ads are in the middle of threads and are NSFW.

I am not sure if placing a single ad in-between post 50 and 51 in each page is really too much. We have to finance this forum somehow after all.

Anyway, that advertisement is definitely inappropriate, yes.

I just got an even more wilder one from the same site that claims to be "PG"

I wouldn't entirely discard the idea of a paid fee. Like I get people not being okay with it for anonymity's sake, but money is money. I don't like saying that as much as people hate to see it.
As for the in thread ads, is there anyway to exclude them from appearing in important sections of the forum? (Mainly CRTs.).
I use an adblocker but I would like a way to support the site in that sense so I don't feel maybe as guilty about it.

I believe that you can make donations, I'd ask Ant for an appropriate link

The problem is primarily the kinds of ads that are being shown. The placements of the ads are a bit odd sometimes, but that's just something we'll have to live with really. The big issue here is the content of the ads being shown, many of which are not appropriate for our "all ages" setting in the slightest, and have been showing up frequently for many users.

The advertisements pertaining to dating sites, weird 18+ games and the like ought to be removed based on our current demographics and generally not having anything to do with the wiki at all.

Irreputable companies should probably be stricken out, we don't want no snake oil sailsmen and the like.

Advertisement should probably be kept close to what the userbase generally would be interested in? I realize beggars can't be choosers and this is more of a suggestion but still. Preferably anime, games, comics, pop culture related things.

We used to have a donation button, but literally nobody contributed to it.

Thank you. I think that we already deactivated the dating sites though.

Also, it would be appreciated if I can get more specific examples of the advertisements that are bad, via screencaptures and the like.

We considered a "Supporter" title (and a lack of advertisements) for people who help out with money donations, but again, I am not sure if it is realistic to organise the payments in an anonymous manner that still lets us identify whoever made them via their usernames. PayPal always reveals whoever made the donation for example.

Informed suggestions in this regard would be very appreciated.

Is there some service that allows members to safely donate anonymously while only writing their usernames that they use in this forum in conjunction?

Well, Patreon is a monthly subscription service. I would prefer if people make payments for one year at a time, so we don't have to constantly turn on and off the "Supporter" buttons for lots of people.

I believe that it gives you the option to donate at a yearly rate instead of monthly. I have done so with a subscription of mine already.

Aha.

That may be workable then, but everybody would need to use the same usernames that they use here in Patreon as well, or at least sufficiently similar ones for us to recognise them.

I would appreciate if our members here are willing to investigate how alternatives to the Patreon solution would work as well.

The only truly anonymous way to transfer money would be through cryptocurrency.
Other than that, I've heard CashApp lets you send money while only revealing what's essentially your username to the recipient.

Kofi is a good option

People can make an account and stuff, but you won't be able to see it unless they choose to. It can be both anonymous or their wiki username.

Well, I think that there are some donation drive sites that let people donate anonymously or with a username of their choice.

Nah you aren't alone. This scene is from a pornhwa and I honestly don't think it's something that most people should be exposed to, especially younger people. Leaving aside the graphic nature of it, there are other dark and disturbing stuff in it.

I am pretty sure we already asked to ban all 18+ content. Does google not understand the difference between 18+ content and normal content?
I wonder about that as well. I thought that Google would only contain safe content if we disabled all of the nastier categories such as gambling and the like.

If somebody can investigate how we can easily adjust our settings in this regard, I would greatly appreciate it.

Not to sound rude but this is exactly why I use adblock. The fact my peers are getting invasive, inappropriate and NSFW ads during discussions pretty much gives me zero incentive to turn off my adblock and support this site monetarily.

I dunno it feels like this new ad system was implemented very recklessly with very little understanding on what type of ads this site would attract as well as not taking into the consideration it's impact on users. I get this site needs to make money in order to maintain itself, I truly do but as of the time being (in it's current state) this is only doing more harm than good and may put off future new users from coming here.

That's my take away from this situation.
I have sent an email to the others with the information that FinePoint found, regarding how to hopefully disable all such content.
Only time will tell I'm afraid but I too hope that the input from the others above is taken seriously and these issues are resolved ASAP.
