Yahtzee recently had a good bit on the difference between Sonic and Mario in this video. To quote:

Then again, we have Sonic The Hedgehog, a funny animal game for kiddies, that made the mistake of trying to age with its audience by adding goth hedgehogs with guns, and bats with ****, and is now sucking the doormat outside a Subway for nourishment. While its former peer, Mario, stayed focused on the kiddies, reinvented itself for every new generation of kiddies, and is now the world's fourth largest economy.

Also aren't they flat out wrong about Maruki having resistance to Almighty attacks? I just checked the Megaten wiki and his final form has resistance to everything except Almighty. The only time in that fight he has resistances like that is a game mechanics where you need to kill the tendrils before you can actually harm him proper.

I'm not going to lie: that's precisely why I'm more of a Sonic fan than I am a Mario fan, even though both are fantastic.

While we can argue all we want about the overall execution and reception of Sonic during the 2000's till the cows come home, I've always respected and appreciated SEGA wanting to add depth and layers to the stories of Sonic despite being marketed for kids. There's nothing wrong with remaining focused on the kids, but I think recent Sonic games like Frontiers and even Shadow Generations are examples of how you can create games which appeal to both children and adults simultaneously.

When was he?
Never

I'm just joking about Eggman's divorce scaling

Honestly, he is absolutely right (Even though i like the more complex plots of the 3D games)

Sonic didn't adapted itself very well at the start of the fifth generation of consoles and ended up being a step backwards Mario

I mean, the Sonic games were always for kids? Plus Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were not where the decline started. Sonic's bigger problems began in 2006, but the biggest problems with those games were by far the technical issues. I'm not a sonic fan but the problem with Sonic is that its bad.
Telling darker stories doesn't torpedo your games sales, making bad games does.

I think one of the SEGA's biggest flaws when it comes to handling Sonic is that they have this strange desire to constantly reinvent the formula for the next Sonic game instead of just taking what worked and improving upon it while keeping it fun.

I think a perfect example of this is the period of time between Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Generations: Sonic Unleashed introduced the boost formula, Sonic Colors fine tuned what people didn't like about Unleashed while keeping what people liked about it, and then Sonic Generations further improves upon what was improved in Colors while also fine tuning what people didn't like about Colors. So there was this consistent pattern where SEGA kept the fundamentals the same, but they kept improving the formula with each subsequent release.

But then they released Sonic Lost World, Sonic Boom, and several other mediocre Sonic games which played drastically different and were considered mediocre to genuinely bad games. They tried to correct course with Sonic Forces, though we know that turned out. Then they introduced the open zone formula for Sonic Frontiers which they most likely liked, and Shadow Generations recently improved upon key aspects of what people critiqued Frontiers for while also improving upon Sonic Generations in the process.

So the bottom line of this little rant is that SEGA needs to look at the success of their recent games and realize that they don't need to constantly reinvent the formula of the franchise, they just need to keep improving upon what they have in their hands while also ensuring that the games remain fun.

I mean, I don’t want every 3D game to be open world. I’m kind of worried Zelda is just only going to make BOTW style games for 3D Zelda, and that might turn me away from the series a little

In all fairness: Shadow Generations really trimmed down the over bloated fat of the open zone formula of Sonic Frontiers by making the White Space open zone more of an explorable hub world compared to an unnecessarily huge open world.

Yeah, i agree with you

Mario has been doing the exact same thing for almost 40 years and it barely has negative criticism

Okay, so on a very, very basic level I can at least understand where this person is coming from. We cannot with 100% certainty say that really anything Joker has bypasses GER because they never have and never will canonically interact with each other for obvious reasons. Maybe in Araki's vision, GER really is just built like that, no one knows. But, like, that's the entire point of conversations like this. We have to figure out for ourselves how their abilities interact, and based on what's shown and told to us in Persona/SMT, Joker should be able to bypass GER. If you disagree with that conclusion, then fine, fair enough, but that's just what the evidence we have points to.
