Say Gengar used Toxic. How much would this hinder Zeref? Would Zeref coming into contact with his shadow also affect him?
I ask because I believe Gengar may edge ahead via the conditions he can put onto others to cripple them

The same way he absorbed Fairy Heart from a ghost. He can also do it in stopped time.

The time with Mavis is the only time I can think of him interacting with something without a body but you said that she had a physical body so that doesn't count. Even if the death spell did hit Gengar, he's a ghost type and is already dead. The only way Zeref could win is absoprtion but he's never been shown to be able to physically touch ghosts.

Why are we not simply treating Gengar as tangible like we do for Bleach characters? The only reason we take away intang and soul crush is because its a stomp for them otherwise. Just restrict Gengar's and continue with the fight.

So zeref can't hit gengar, so what's the point of having this match. Gengar is the only one able to hit someone, and zeref can't do anything to him since his intangible.

This is what is so confusing about Ghost types, and it doesn't really make sense to consider the lot of them to be actually dead creatures.
They are born in the states they are in and can reproduce, and they are susceptible to being effected by things like Perish Song which we consider an OHK, which then we would consider fainting to be dying.
Gengar is very much a living thing, because otherwise it shouldn't be effected by these things, or struck by things that exist on the physical plane, like rocks and water.
