The example you gave is totally different. If you notice the scene where Ichigo is blocking the Cero, he is not doing it with the side of the sword but with the blade, in addition to Ichigo who redirected the attack towards the Menos Grande.
In the case of Renji is different, the side of the sword that reflects the attack and sends him in different directions, the only thing Renji did was by the side and nothing else.
Here it is clear that Ichigo blocked with the blade

More than likely a Soul. But that's only because we only ever see him in SS or The Vandenreich. It's ambiguous what he'd be considered if he went back to the world of the living.
