DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

Really liked that Strange vs Reimu blog. Knew that my boy Stephen was due for an update after seeing how insane Doom was against Vecna and getting a primer on Touhou was neat as someone who has never interacted with the franchise at all but has several friends that are big fans.

id say cool factor is the big thing here more than connections but for some concise connections

1. both are silent JRPG protagonists who's main antagonist is related to a moon like deity which causes mental fuckery in the populace
2. both have a dream like realm that they can access to upgrade weapons/skills ect which are both hosted by an old mentor and a doll like caretaker

theres some more minor connections but theres some contrasts as well which is kinda what i prefer because often times ive found connections in death battles to be just people wanting the same character archetype with a different coat of paint to fight.

as for if its a close matchup. prob not, but i dont think its any more of a stomp than Makotos other popular matchups like Neku.
Alright, vibes. Also yeah, Megaten kinda shit stomps every MU outside of like maybe a few, but even then

I knew there were higher dimensions (and that they were minimally universal), but I didn't expect 5, possibly 6 dimensions with a possibly infinite multiverse

Made one for Megatron like I said I would:

814f91448b1d.png

Main Theme: Once powerful leaders of space-faring empires that are the main antagonists of their worlds, hailing from opposite positions in society and fighting to ensure the ultimate welfare of their people, that both took opposing paths after their empires fell.

Theme Name: Tyrants of Yesterday.

Connections:

  • Both were leaders of space-faring empires known for the subjugation of entire worlds (Thragg is Grand Regent of the Viltrum Empire, while Megatron was leader of the Decepticons)
  • Both of their species are highly powerful physically, with extremely long life spans and advanced technology.
  • Both are among the most powerful of their species, with both training in extremely harsh conditions to earn their rank and power (Thragg was trained in all manner of combat in order to become Regent. Megatron was the most renowned gladiator in all of Cybertron, having trained himself in to be skilled in countless forms of Cybertronian weaponry, and used the pits as influence to build up his army)
  • Both were born through unique circumstances that made them so powerful, ironically for opposite reasons (Thragg is the end product of generation of eugenics to create the most pure blooded Viltrumite. Megatron is the first known Cybertronian hybrid, being born from a Point-One Percenter spark, a mutant amongst his race, but place within a cold-constructed body)
  • Both were born raised from opposing levels of their society, and their rise to power both involved the murder of their planet's leaders (Thragg was born powerful and was raised to be Regent of Viltrum. After Argall's assassination by Thaeddus, Thragg ascended to become Grand Regent until one of Argall's heirs could be found. Megatron was born from the lowest caste of Cybertronian society, and would eventually raise a revolution to overthrow the regime of both Sentinel and Zeta Prime)
  • Both would be raised an mentored by an older member of their species with opposing societal positions, ones that would influence their future ideologies (Thragg would carry on Emperor Argall's ideology after his death, and grew up with the same extremist doctrine created by Argall that was taught to every Viltrumite. Megatron was mentored by the lowly crippled miner Terminus, who was a partial influence for Megatron to take violent action against the Senate)
  • During their reign, both would be responsible for the mass decimation of a good chunk of their population, and it would create a chain of events that nearly lead their race to extinction (While not stated in comics, in the show, Thragg initiated the purge, an event that culled the "weak" of their society and eventually halved their population. Seeing that the Viltrumites haven't changed their ways, Thaeddus created the scourge virus, reducing the Viltrumites to only 50. Megatron would instigate the war, killing billions of Cybertronians in the process, leading to many Cybertronians choosing to leave the planet in a mass exodus, and eventually the war would render their planet uninhabitable)
  • Because of these prior events, both empires would seek out to conquer other worlds as a way to salvage their depleting numbers (The Viltrumites would seek out worlds for species most suitable for reproduction, in order to repopulate their species. The Cybertronians would attack other worlds in order to find other sources of energy to solve their ongoing energy crisis)
  • Both attack and conquer other worlds for opposing reasons, reasons that would logically both of these empires to attack each other (The Viltrumites believe that because of their immense strength, and their might makes right mentality, they believe it is their right to rule any they deem to be inferior to them. Tarn reveals that the true reason Megatron attacks alien worlds is that he specifically attacks worlds that may potentially threaten Cybertron, as he realized that universe was immensely prejudistic towards mechanical races. Very much a "kill them before they kill us mentality. Funny enough, Thragg would send Nolan to eliminate anything that may potentially threaten the Viltrum empire)
  • Both of these methods involve their soldiers infiltrating alien societies and weakening them from within (Nolan became a superhero to gain the trust of humanity and eliminate their strongest warriors. The Decepticons set up that six phase infiltration protocol, that allowed the Decepticons to weaken a society from within before ending a Phase Sixer, a one man army, to swiftly eliminate anyone left)
  • Because of these, both empire would be amongst the most feared species in the cosmos (The Viltrumites are considered the most dangerous species in the universe, with the Coalition of Planets being formed as a resistance towards their empire. The actions of the Cybertronian war lead to the Cybertronian being the most feared species in the galaxy, with the Galactic, with the Cybertronian being blacklisted from other interstellar organizations like the Galactic Council, the Black Block Consortia or the Solstar Order)
  • Despite their cruel nature, both of them ultimately fight for the same thing, seeing their species thrive and flourish once again (Thragg seeks to preserve the Viltrumites so that they remold the universe in their image, carrying on Argall's ideals. Megatron ultimately seeks to create a tolitarian utopia for all Cybertronians, one where any perceivable threat to Cybertron becomes inconceivable)
  • Both have occupied Earth in some manner (The Viltrumites would remain undercover on Earth in order to repopulate. While the Decepticons successfully conquer Earth in All Hail Megatron)
  • Both sides would final battle that lead to their empire's fall and beinga fraction of what it once was (The Viltrumite War and the conflict on both Earth in AHM and Cybertron in Chaos Theory)
  • The crumbling of their empires both involve their planets having opposing fates to one another (The fall of the Viltrum empire ended with the destruction of Viltrum, leading to the Viltrumites retreating and hiding on Earth. The Cybertronian war ended with Cybertron being reborn anew as the Matrix reignited life within Cybertron. The Autobot would maintain dominant occupation of Cybertron afterwards)
  • Both would face off against an extremely powerful opponent, with both characaters winning because they were determined to save their people from extinction (Thragg would face off against Battle Beast, and would win claiming he was fighting so he could preserve the Vitrumites from extinction. Megatron would face off against the Decepti-God in order to prevent it from destroying Cybertron, all the while refusing to succumb to its mind control)
  • Earth would influence the soldiers of their empire in some manner, turning them to change for the better (The Viltrumites would mellow out a lot after experience human life on Earth, while many of the Decepticons like Soundwave would change their ways for the better albeit much slower)
  • While under this new post war world, both members of their empires would change into something better in order to maintain peace (The Viltrumites slowly began to properly co-exist with humanity, helping them the invasion against the engineers and later become a peace keeping organization. Under Soundwave, the Decepticons held a fragile allegiance with the Autobots in order to maintain peace, and would assist in fighting many threats that would endanger their alliance)
  • Both of these characters would take opposing paths their empires fell (Thragg remained stubborn and stuck to the Viltrumite's old ways, while Megatron would see the error of his ways, and surrendered himself to the Autobots, choosing to defect entirely)
  • Both are involved in huge events that depict members of the empire moving on and changing for the better while others remain stuck to the past (Thragg would lead a war against Viltrumite/CoP/Earth alliance, aiming to get vengeance on those he deems traitors. Megatron would face off against the Decepticon Justice Divison, the most extremist of the Decepticon empire)
  • Despite Thragg also having the same capacity to embrace love like the other Viltrumites, his upbringing caused him to be stuck to the old ways of the Viltrumites, something the lead to his death as he burns alone in the sun. He would raise an army of Thraxan hybrids in order to recreate the empire, but his cruel nature led them to betray him in the end. Megatron accepted the error of his ways and embraced to continue changing for the better. Megatron would go on to accept his trial, face off against previous demons, and for 500 years in an alternate universe, Megatron would return to his original roots as a revolutionary and raise a resistance against the Functionists as they sought to conquer the universe.
  • Both die in somewhat unconventional manners (Thragg dies burning alone in the sun. Megatron is stated by JRO to be executed off screen after going his trial at the hands of the Galactic Council)
Debate potential: Mainly kinda boils down to where you scale each other physically, both can easily be argued to be at most within the planetary ranges and FTL in speed. While ik Megatron does technically stomp with the way DB scales these two verses, I'mma just ignore that for the sake of this mu.

While one could argue how usable Stealth Bomber Megatron, I don't think it matters too much as feats wise, SB Megs isn't too insanely high above regular Megs.

Animation Potential: With how Frieza vs Megatron is done, I do think there's good potential if given the right choreography. Thragg shockwave punches and whirlwind stuff could go well against Megatron being a long range attacker that can switch between melee and stuff. Megatron is overall much more versatile in attacks, but outside of anti-matter, Megs doesn't have any insane insta-kill options that would make this look too one-sided, as he mainly relies on physical attacks in battle.

Story set up: There are two ways this story could go.

  • Decepticon Megatron and Regent Thragg: Given how I explained the different reasons the Viltrumites and Decepticons conquer foreign worlds for, it's reasonable that these two would inevitably clash with each other. The Viltrumites would see Cybertronians as just machines while the Cybertronians see the Viltrumites as threats to their welfare and seek to usurp their resources for themselves. And given how well these two contrast in their origins (A high ranking member of society vs a member of the lowest caste) yet they end up with very similar ideologies, I think these two would share a mutual respect for each other and I think it would go well dialogue wise as these two fight for the future of their people. I'd imagine the set up probably be in space as the two empire are in the middle of conflict with one another. In which case I feel either base or Stealth Bomber Megatron can be used for this MU.
  • Autobot Megatron and Exile Thragg: This one I think is more narratively interesting. As said prior, both would likely see something of themselves in each other, but also share a level of disdain. Megatron sees Thragg as a mirror of his old self, unrefusing to change and someone that needs to be stopped no matter the cost. Thragg would see Megatron as a pathetic remnant of his old self, someone who succumbed to being soft just like all the other Viltrumites did, and express disappointment that Megatron lacks the "resolve" like he does. I'd imagine the fight likely takes place on an alien planet, in which Megatron and the other lost light Autobots seek to liberate from Thragg and his new empire.

How do we feel about this chat?

Honestly, it wouldn't be the first time they disregarded what Megamind is capable of because the series hasn't been relevant in years unlike the Despicable Me franchise lmao

Still not an excuse though. I still don't get where the idea of the minions being ******* Doomsday-levels of indestructible comes from. A better argument can be made for the brainbots since they literally come from a verse where superhumans exist.

In hindsight, if Minion is disguised as Megamind, thats a bad sign because they wouldnt reveal that near end and have Megamind be 90% of time be Minion disguised. Thats dumb. If they do a reveal in middle, Gru would have time to survive and counter that.

You're entitled to jokes, I'm not trying to be the fun police lol. You simply have a track record of snarky remarks towards the Sonic fandom whenever "Sonic" is in your post, in which I doubt they were all just "jokes". I'm not even saying it isn't deserved because your comments usually make me laugh lmao, but let's not act like somebody can't see such a pattern from you and easily take that the wrong way.

Either way, I'm not trying to be a confrontational stooge about it or come down your neck. Just felt compelled to make an observation.
I'm a big Sonic fan as well, and tbf while I am mostly joking I am also pointing out something I see pretty frequently from the Sonic fanbase in versus battles/powerscaling and in general. (Also yeah the M2 vs S2 joke is kinda in bad faith icl, and it is probably true that most people want it cause the episode was bad).

ChiefSlayer is overall best choice for rematch, but animation wise M2Shadow needed the fight most.
I personally never felt that way, I know I was joking in about how people only wanted M2 vs S2 because Shadow lost or whatever, but it genuinely felt like to me that a very significant reason people wanted ChiefSlayer 2 was because Slayer won now. I personally think that we could have waited a bit longer to see the Crucible vs Plasma Sword clash and some 3D gunplay, when M2 vs Shadow is much worse than Chief vs Doomguy.

(Also I thought it would have been cooler if they still only stuck to Doomguy stuff since it made it more debatable, and he actually got new weapons in official level packs for the Steam port of Doom 1+2, giving another reason for them to do it).

Outside of like Sun disc, I find myself caring less and less about research and verdicts. DanteClive annoyed me a little bit maybe, but the more grass I touch the more I find it hard to care about bragging rights
