Unpopular Opinions and (Friendly) Rant thread

You know what really grinds my gears? People like you who have the need to apologize for their honest opinions and honest behavior. Go balls out bro, show people how you feel, have some respect for your own feelings. Don't regret having an opinion and don't apologize. An honest opinion is honest because it is your truth. You shouldn't apologize for what you think, you should fight for it. Whether it is the best thing since sliced bread or the most dogshit take humanity has seen, if you truly believe in it, protect it and be proud of it until you can't anymore.
agree fra

You didn't even mention Kirby turning into a golden statue of Mario with the Stone ability in Super Star and it's remake... And to think I almost liked your comment.
The thing is that would only fit in the mario-metroid-kirby shared universe theory. There's tons of objects that are in Kirby that are from different games. Cave Offensive has screw attack and other items which are from other games. Mario watches kirby play megaton punch. You help Samus in one of the Kirby Adventure 3 levels. What my crack theory was doing was ignoring crossovers and references and using evidence that could stick.

But the shared universe theory is so damn funny.
I mean this means Samus mostly fights pirates and abominations on horrible planets and sometimes goes to relax on cartoony-ass planets with pink puffballs or mushrooms.

I watched the Knuckles miniseries out of curiosity and it's actually pretty solid
Has some genuinely funny moments and great action
Most of the characters are likeable and enjoyable too
Also forgot to mention the kitchen fight which was all in one take, that was funny as **** and entertaining too

i find it kinda funny that randomly on villains wiki you will see like, folklore monsters, hell, theres one even from brasil in there

Heh, thanks, dude.
question, what characters you think would fit this?
From the top of my head (simplyfing things):

Cloud Strife (Original FFVII only): Surprising giving that for a good while Cloud was the posterboy for the emo trope in videogame land, but before Advent Children and Kingdom Hearts was more concerned with making him miserable so he could be depressed and look good while moping, the original game actually Cloud as surprisingly coherent with the events of his life. Well, Cloud is initially presented as your typical edgy badass: he's a mercenary working with the good guys only for money, he's a former member of an elite military unit of the bad guys (SOLDIER), he has your typical "I don't give a damn" attitude, he's strong and experienced fighter, etc. However, the story makes sure to make noticeable that Cloud's attitude comes also as juvenile and immature, his cockiness and show-off tendencies can really seem tryhard and he has plenty of moments of awkwardness and silliness that really contrast the cool image he's trying to project, despite being a legitimate gifted fighter and capable leader. Not to mention, very few of the other characters actually buy his bravado, Barret finds it irritating, Aerith doesn't believe it and teases Cloud endlessly for it, Tifa is afraid Cloud might end up hurting himself for it, Red finds it amusing, Cid thinks Clouds acts like a stupid kid, etc.

Eventually, Sephiroth reveals that Cloud was never in SOLDIER, everything is just a lie he made to himself. So all Cloud was doing was trying to act the way he, an awkward dork, thought was "cool". But it's a lot more complicated than that, and here's where the tragic backstory kicks in:

Cloud has a viciously tragic life, but it's never played to make the player feel pity for him or excuse his actions, rather entirely to explain why Cloud is the person who he is and why he has the problem's that he has. For starters, Cloud was a kid that couldn't fit in with others back in his hometown, this led to a need to feel acknowledged and appreciated especially by Tifa, the girl he liked, which fueled his decision to go to midgar and join the SOLDIER unit, chasing after Sephiroth the strongest hero of the unit, whom Cloud looked up as the biggest badass in the world. However, due to his experiences he was too mentally and emotionally weak to be in the unit so he was recruited as an infantryman, a mere grunt of the army, which deepened his feelings of inferiority. He then met and quickly became besties with Zack Fair, a guy who was everything Cloud dreamed he could be, Zack was an elite of SOLDIER, strong, brave, confident, charismatic, popular among the unit's members and good friends with Sephiroth. After a mission gone awry Sephiroth goes insane and burns Cloud's hometown to the ground, killing his mother, and fatally wounds Tifa and Zack. While Sephiroth is eventually defeated, Cloud is also gravely wounded and is taken alongside Zack by Shinra and used for experiments which leave Cloud in a comatose state. Zack manages to break both free and escape, but the Shinra army finds them and Zack dies protecting Cloud, whom manages to recover in the final moments to see Zack pass away.

So here's where everything comes together:

  • Him being unable to fit in among the other kids in his town, getting into fights and being unable to speak to Tifa, the girl he liked, led him to have feelings of inferiority and a desire of ackowledgement and aproval.
  • This led to his decision to join SOLDIER so Tifa would admire him, as in his head, he had this rather shallow idea that those big strong badass warriors were what a true worthy person was and among them Sephiroth, the hero of SOLDIER was what Cloud admired the most. This blinded him of what was happening right next to him, that Tifa really liked him for who he was, that she didn't want a superhero, just a reliable person by her side.
  • When attempting to join the unit his insecurities and doubts born from his troubled childhood made him too mentally and emotionally weak to be in SOLDIER, being recruited as a mere grunt of the army, furthering his feelings of inferiority.
  • When Sephiroth destroyed his hometown and his family, Cloud's admiration from him became feelings of betrayal and hatred, which led him to try to fight Sephiroth and getting severly wounded, only winning due to Sephiroth's ego allowing for a fluke.
  • The experimentation Shinra subjected him to gave him the same superhuman capabilities as SOLDIER, but broke his mind because it was too weak. Even when he did partially recover, he saw Zack die to protect him, which on top of the destruction of his hometown and loss of his family, caused Cloud's identity and memories to shatter.
  • This break led to Cloud to create an idealized version of himself, he discarded the weak and pathetic self he thought he was and mixed up his memories with Zack's exploits as a SOLDIER (including being in SOLDIER, being Sephiroth's partner and such), as Zack's was everything Cloud wanted to be. However, since Cloud was just a shy, insecure kid wanting to be a cool badass, this new persona he created was just his immature idea of what being "strong and cool" was, hence his juvenile and cocky personality, but also what fueled this was to be the sort of hero Tifa would admire, the one he told her he would become but failed to do so.
  • When Sephiroth shows up again, Cloud's hatred for him for destroying his hometown and a supposed destined rivalry with him as SOLDIER made Cloud a pretty easy target for Sephiroth to manipulate and string along for his plans. Cloud was obsessed with getting revenge and "settling the score" at the expense of everything else.
  • When cracks begin to appear in Cloud's story and persona, he freaks out badly and doubts begin to consume him. Barret has to snap him out and Cloud barely manages to compose himself to keep his going with his mission. But when Sephiroth lays out the truth, Cloud completely falls apart as that very feeble image of strength keeping him together falls like a pile of sand.

But then comes the resolution of the story: accepting yourself as you are, your flaws, your shortcomings, your weaknesses and that allows you to see your strengths and virtues.

After a grueling road, Cloud finally faces his hidden memories and accepts the truth: he never was in SOLDIER, he was too embarassed to admit it and his failures made him wish escape from reality, from himself and that led to him to create this caricature of what he thought was the ideal SOLDIER. But he accepted he couldn't live lying to himself and had to accept himself, that was the only way to move forward. By doing this, he finally understands and begins a healthy relationship with Tifa, he can escape from Sephiroth's manipulations and defeat him once again, and also to grow into a competent warrior on his own merits, fighting enemies as strong as what Zack had faced in the past. This also gives way to Cloud's true personality, an awkward but well meaning and kind man, whom his friends genuinely like and look up to and Cloud finally coming to terms with his past, bit by bit.

His village being destroyed and family murdered is what fueled his revolutionary ambitions to participate in the Meiji Restoration in favor of reforming Japan for a more equal society. However, this also led him to be impulsive and obsessive with such ambitions, which caused him to abandon his training when it was still incomplete and be easily goaded by the government into becoming one of its assassins. His actions as Battousai led to him causing the death of the fiance of a woman named Tomoe whom he eventually fell in love with and despite that she forgave him and after many trials they became a family, the pressure from his role and questioning whether it was the right choice, as well as the death of Tomoe crushed him to the point he never found a place in the new era and in fact made him take his no killing vow of the main series. Even with that, the trauma never went away and Battousai still lived inside Kenshin and could be brought out if the right buttons are pressed and his actions as an assassin created no shortage of enemies that still chase Kenshin to the present, endangering his friends and loved ones despite his best attempts to simply protect the innocent. Not to mention, more than once Kenshin's no killing vow is called out as naive and foolish by Saito, who fought Kenshin during the restoration even if he's now his ally and he points out that more than once it was just luck that not killing an enemy didn't end with said enemy causing a tragedy, something Kenshin doesn't really refute.

Guts is usually seen as this dark, brooding and macho badass... but his character has a surprising amount of nuance. It's no surprise that his life has been hellish since he was born, but the hardships have shaped his behaviour and personality in both good and bad, and the bad has led to him growing in different ways. For example, his sexual abuse at Gambino's hands, abusive father and being raised to fight since he was a kid led him to only know to live in the battlefield and push everybody away out of fear of getting hurt and simply not know how to interact outside battle. Him figuring out how to appreciate his comrades in the Band of the Hawk, is the first step of his development and dealing with his issues regarding love and intimacy an important part of his relationship with Casca. When the Eclypse happens and the Band of the Hawk is massacred, the betrayal and loss causes Guts to be consumed by hatred and revenge and sets off to kill Griffith, but this is not shown as a good thing, in fact the Black Swordsman is Guts lowest point, where he committed many horrible things to satisfy his hatred for apostoles and worse than all prioritized his revenge over the wellbeing of Casca who was traumatized by the Eclypse, which not only he deeply regrets, others call him out on it and Casca herself no longer trusts Guts in her damaged state. This leads Guts to reconsider his actions and his revenge and has him find new allies and friends he treasures, not only because he learned from the Band of the Hawk the beauty of camaraderie, not only because he lost his friends in the Eclypse but also because he feels responsible from abandoning Casca due to giving in to hatred.

I only read up to the Soul Society arc from Bleach, but one thing that stuck with me was the incident regarding Ichigo's mother and how this affected his personality and his way of living. I could be misremembering, since it has been years, but it was her death what caused Ichigo to begin projecting this tough guy persona to others, which, while he has an attitude himself, is also in big part an attempt to be seen as strong and as reliable. This also created his protect others mantra, which while can make Ichigo an incredibly loyal and sacrificing friend, it's also a double edged sword since it can reach obsessive and even self destructive levels, sometimes shouldering responsibilities that aren't his due to the feeling of failure and loss her mother's death had. I could be wrong though, it has been ages since I saw Bleach.

You cooked a 5 star meal. You're being promoted to head chef.

Soooo... a rant here, pretty long, sorry to subject you guys to my nonsense. If you decide to read, no worries no AVGN style anger here or anything, just complaints

Dunno if an opinion, just me whinning about something, but I really dislike how writters tend to abuse tragic pasts or tragedy in writting as some sort of replacement for proper development or personality for characters and how cheaply and manipulatively they handle it. For example... have this bland non-entity of a character? Give him a tragic past and boom, now they are "complex and layered". Have this gargantuan unlikeable douchebag or irredeemable villain? Slap a sappy sobstory and now the audience is forced to like them.

In general, tragedy and drama are also commonly incredibly shallow when used in the present of the story as well. Traumatize a character with some cartoonishly over the top misery in a bid for pity points and then what? An insipid friendship speech, some generic bullcrap about "tomorrow will be a new day, just smile and face the future with your head up", "something something will to live something follow your heart something protect your friends something embrace your dreams yadda yadda". All this grandiose sounding rubbish is like telling a sick person to "just get better", honestly. It gets especially eye-roll worthy with characters that are subjected to ridiculous amounts of trauma and they just shrug it off. That's not a strong willed badass, that's a one dimensional caricature, that is as fun to watch as an overpowered hero who has the story constantly fed them weaklings to slap aside to show off.

But what really bothers me, and what led to this rant, is that so many people actually buy all that. They want over the top misery, they think it automatically makes writting good, and what's worse, other alternatives in writting automatically are taken as bad. A character who is in a poor financial situation, struggles with two jobs and has a strained relationship with a friend is not struggling, oh no, he has it easy, he requires to have at least one dead parent, be eating dirt and fight with drug addiction. A character is legitimately a selfish and self centered person? Wait where is the part where their family abandoned them in the streets giving a tragic excuse for their actions?

I am not talking about dark stuff happening for dark humor or parody porpuses, obviously, since the aim there is completely different.

Now, tragedy, misery and hardship can and have been done well many times, but it's not as common as one would think. You know, hard events in a character's life that actually develop or explain how the character turned out, for better or worse, and influence them and their decisions, or you know actually caused damage that the character has to deal even in the present. Not want to be a shill, but this is why I hold Cloud Strife from the original FFVII in such high regard, before the other VII entries destroyed his character or other characters that have legitimate unappealing flaws that aren't excused with stock drama. Especially how much of fiction nowadays seems to be written to pander to audiences or for the author to live whatever wet dream they have.

Well, that's that. Again, sorry for that embarassing display.
While I can see your point on the sympathetic characters being so overplaid in fiction so many times. But at the same time villains with simply just no motivations at all sometimes spells out sheer laziness at times.

Reading all that makes me want to write out why I like one of my favorite characters in recent history, Mash Burnedead, but uh, the writing would be too long

ngl, I could probably try to write why I love some characters a lot, but most of the reasons why I love certain characters are silly or small, not deep at all. That being said, I could probably write entire walls of text detailing how much I hate and want to kill certain fictional characters. (Ejem Hecatia, Sumireko, Okina, uhhhh)

wasn't the villain in the most recent puss in boots movie loved because he was evil for no real reason?

Oh finally I get to say it. Death wasn't some lad doing his job, though technically he is. No, that wolf is evil, very much so. He takes pleasure I snuffing out the life of his victims, and specifically wanted to kill Puss out of self desire.

I thought you were talking about Death for some reason
Then I remembered it's Jack Horner
Yeah Jack had no reasons to be an evil douche but it's just the way he is that makes him great
He's ridiculously funny and cruel to people, and he never even thinks about changing his ways or being better at all
