"Willpower" is also how Simon does most of what he does and there's no real explanation for it.
Just because Gilgamesh resisted Angra Mainyu through sheer willpower doesn't mean we can ignore the fact that said curses were breaking down and reconstructing his mind, body and soul. Even then, he still didn't resist it completely, since he still got a physical, non-Servant body out of it - which proves that his previous body was successfully broken down.
Like Monarch said, we don't equalize the cause of resistance, unless it's outright stated to be a part of the ability's weaknesses, which it isn't, since Gilgamesh was an exceptional case.
