General DC Comics Discussion Thread

Hmm. Tom King is a part of the main writing team for the new DC Universe franchise, and his main characteristics as a writer so far has been to deconstruct, severely distort, mock, defile, undermine, and otherwise very subversively take all of the fun out of almost every entertainment property he touches, almost as if he is running a psy-op mission for his former employers at the CIA.

I really wish that Gunn had picked Grant Morrison and Mark Waid instead.

By the way, people has been spamming this feat of Superman for a while all across the website of him punching timelines, so I wanted to know if this feat of Superman is legit or not.

"Defile"
I'm sorry I think that's treating it waaaaay too seriously lmao

I don't think Tom King is even that bad? Like his GL and Batman stuff sucks. But his Superman and Supergirl works are extremely good, some of the best DC stories I've read. And I've heard some good things about his other works.

He seems to be generally a hit or miss writer.

Tom King's takes on Booster Gold, The New Gods, and the "Wally West is a mass-murderer of superheroes in psychiatric care" stories severely soured me on him, and I have heard from others that this is what Tom usually does.

Heroes in Crisis is infamously his worst story
Plus that one was editorially mandated by our favorite DC official Dan DiDio

All that was stated in your scans was that Superman achieved a feat perceived to be far beyond his usual capabilities by moving Pluto, which had been turned into a new Warworld, after sun-dipping, and that mechanical movement thrusters had been engaged to help prevent it.

All that was stated in your scans was that Superman achieved a feat perceived to be far beyond his usual capabilities by moving Pluto, which had been turned into a new Warworld, after sun-dipping, and that mechanical movement thrusters had been engaged to help prevent it.

Um, the scans repeatedly state that Brainiac 13 had been amped by Imperiex beyond his usual capabilities in this and the previous comic.

Brainiac 13, renegade electronic consciousness from the future, has through stealth and subterfuge quite literally stolen the essence of Imperiex and made it his own.

"This planet is my body, the Imperiex Energy is my blood. You cannot hurt me."

The previous comic (Man of Steel 117) also stating Brainiac and Warworld are being amped by Imperiex.

"Maxima's attack on Warworld was quickly disintegrating in the face of her own arrogance and Brainiac's overwhelming, Imperiex-stoked Firepower."

"While Steel's inexperience did not allow him to fully tap into the Entropy Aegis' potential, he could still harness enough of the Imperiex Essence to counter the same force as deployed by Brainiac."

"The force that was Imperiex can not be nullified. It is eternal and has been absorbed by me."

"With the power of Imperiex growing within me, I will make the music that controls the spheres."

So. Now that I've established Brainiac and Warworld were amped by Imperiex, point blank. Here's the proof the sundip was to kill Brainiac amped by Imperiex.

Superman in the previous comic (Man of Steel 117)

"I've got to do something I've never attempted before. Take things to another level." and "Dr. Irons would later say Superman's eyes had nothing of the human in them. He was certain the war had forced all emotional connection from the Man of Steel, leaving only a weapon in service to the existing universe."

We know he can't be talking about moving a planet as he's attempted that before. In Superman: The Earth Stealers, in Return to Krypton which was just a few months earlier (April 2001, when the events of Action Comics 782 here are in October 2001). So we know for a fact he's talking about sun dipping to get enough power to kill Brainiac.

Superman when he went into the sun directly states what he's powering up to do. "Focus. Clarity. Kill."

"Kill it. Feel nothing. Shred it until nothing remains of war. Death. It. Me."

Them confirming the powerup was to fight Brainiac 13 amped by Imperiex: "It's working. Brainiac 13 is shaken. Superman is hurting him, distracting him"

"Do it. Kill it. If it has a body, it can die. If it has blood, it has a heart. Crush it."

"Good, This (altered state) will allow you to do what must be done. Kill Brainiac"

So. We know the sundip explicitly was to kill Brainiac 13 amped by Imperiex. It's only AFTER he decides not to kill Brainiac that he starts pushing Warworld. Which again, is the "Body" of Brainiac amped by Imperiex.

When he starts pushing Warworld, Brainiac activates full thruster countermeasures. The same thrusters that before being upgraded by absorbing Imperiex, were able to move Pluto out of the solar system, and across space in months.

So again. This isn't just him simply "moving a planet the size of Pluto" this is "Superman sundipped to kill someone, then turned around and moved a planet actively trying to stop him with FTL thrusters."

Brainiac was stated to use the energy of Imperiex, but he was stated to only be capable of terraforming one planet at a time, and all that was focused on in the dialogue that I read in your first post was that Superman had powered up to such an extreme degree that he could move small planets despite Warworld's mechanical propulsion systems trying to prevent it.

OK, so let me break this down into four points so I can see which part you disagree with. Also, really quickly, he wasn't going to planets one at a time, as he was going to convert Earth and Apokolips at the same time. His limit was he needs to use his tendrils to connect the planets he's cyber converting. And breaking these tendrils delays the cyber conversion.

1. Superman's plan, the entire reason he performed the sundip was to kill Brainiac 13 amped by Imperiex, who was going to cyber convert the entire universe in hours using his tendrils.

2. Brainiac 13 stated repeatedly he had absorbed the power of Imperiex, and that power was stated to have amped all of Warworld's abilities.

3. Superman, only after deciding not to kill Imperiex amped B13, pushes the Imperiex amped Warworld while B13 tries to stop him with the thrusters. Those thrusters, even before the amp were able to propel the planet at FTL speeds.

4. Given that context, it's not the fact Superman needed to sundip to move a planet that's the takeaway, but that a sundipped Superman moved a planet powered by Imperiex that was using FTL thrusters at full power to try to stop him.

Hmm. Can you display specific scans supporting and accompanying your interpretation please? I had the impression that Superman simply overpowered a small planet + the spaceship rockets of War World, not that Brainiac was actually channelling the full power of Imperiex against him.

Of course, though I wasn't arguing that it was the FULL power of Imperiex, only that it was AMPED by Imperiex and using as much energy as possible.

So, as I showed before, Brainiac 13 had the full power of Imperiex and explictly was using it to amp himself/Warworld as Warworld was his body at that point. Relevant quotes:

Brainiac 13, renegade electronic consciousness from the future, has through stealth and subterfuge quite literally stolen the essence of Imperiex and made it his own.

"This planet is my body, the Imperiex Energy is my blood. You cannot hurt me."

"Maxima's attack on Warworld was quickly disintegrating in the face of her own arrogance and Brainiac's overwhelming, Imperiex-stoked Firepower."

"The force that was Imperiex can not be nullified. It is eternal and has been absorbed by me."

"With the power of Imperiex growing within me, I will make the music that controls the spheres."

All this shows he's not just got the power of Imperiex, but is actively channeling it through Warworld to power up everything about it. Especially see it in the quote "Maxima's attack on Warworld was quickly disintegrating in the face of her own arrogance and Brainiac's overwhelming, Imperiex-stoked Firepower." as it shows B13 channeling Imperiex's power into his auto defenses, while still maintaining control of the tendrils. This shows even without his full focus, he's amping all of Warworld.

Then, when Superman moves Warworld, we have Brainiac 13 explictly say "Full Thruster Countermeasures! How is he moving my planet!?" And when he says that, we see that the one of the tendrils is gone when even a page before, his tendrils were actively a threat. (The Tendrils, of course, being part of the Imperiex power). The other is shown to be retreating from Earth and back to Warworld as well in the following pages. We also see literally the page before he switched to "full thruster countermeasures" he was amping his other bodies with Imperiex energy to try to stop Superman (we can see them glowing purple with Imperiex energy only for them to disappear when he activated the countermeasures, implying he's focusing the energy on the engines)

Then, Brainiac is reduced to begging Superman to stop, powerless to stop him while Imperiex begs Superman to free him. The implication is Brainiac was using as much power as possible but couldn't stop Superman.

While it's possible that he's not using the full power of Imperiex for the engines, I feel that wouldn't really make sense given what we're shown and told. At minimum, and my main argument, Brainiac 13 was using as much of the Imperiex energy as he could to stop Superman.

Hmm. These actually seem like sensible arguments. Imperiex was tier 3-A, correct? Should we change Post-Crisis Superman's final key to "High 4-C normally, 3-A by absorbing extreme amounts of solar energy" then?

What do you think?

Should we add this feat to the list we have in the heralds upgrade thread?

Imperiex under Brainiac 13 was 3-A since his explosion went from Multi-Galatic in scale to second Big Bang.

Though no one other than Superman would scale to this really considering he had so much energy pumped into him that his skin disintegrated for a bit.

Yes, but it seems much more reliable than the other suggested upgrade feats for him.

It might be a good idea for me to suggest it later, but let's wait to see what the members I just summoned here think first.

Your input help would be appreciated here.

That shit looks ass ngl. Like of all the people you could do an anime on, like Flash or Green Lantern, both of which would massively benefit from animation, we do another Batman property. Uuuuuuuggghhhhhhh
Batman sells the most and right now the Flash is perpetually stuck with Flashpoint adaptions.
