DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

Reread G1's debunk of the selene moon feat and it is genuinely abysmal dogshit. It is so bad that I genuinely think I'm going to make a reddit post tearing it apart.

They basically say 'we dont know how her powers work' then go on to assume and jump through hoops to assume her powers work that is far more contrived then taking the feat at face value.

I've never seen something such a pedantic and convoluted 'it could be this other thing' debunk

Which blog was that again

My personal least favorite is Sans Undertale's extra note section. Legit it's just saying "yeah.... we don't want to use it because we think Sin Manipulation is a weird ability for VS Threads" like what? (Also i am 70% this was just added randomly without a CRT, since ive tried a few times to find one to no luck)

What is the Selene Moon Feat

Personally I will always believe that the “character does destruction with vague magic powers” type feat to be the biggest example of powerscaling brainrot. An obvious example of this is the storm feats from Buffy vs Blade where one of the reasons they give for Buffy being stronger is that demon she fought creating a larger storm that Dracula’s.

But what does that matter? Did the demon and Dracula create those storms via physical strength? Is there a way to measure how much energy it took them to create the storms and if said energy can be transferred to their stats or other abilities? No. The answer is no. Storm feats have no bearing on a character’s physical prowess unless otherwise specified. It’s all just vague magic shit.

Do you think Storm from Marvel is gonna be punching out the entire MHA verse just because her storms are so large? Be real.

Yeah but I doubt any Bleach MU has season finale energy outside of like, Kenpachi vs Augus

Well, there is Mr God-Hax

Since, as shown in DC KO, the Joker actively gets rewarded for cheating like this to the point where he's allowed anyone he wants for death battle like scenarios. As such Joker should clearly get Mxyzptlk for every death battle fight as it is only the most accurate way to portray him in DC!
They did her so dirty...
What do you mean? Reddit says otherwise.

something caught my eye
"Not long after the storyboards came out, the storyboard artist made a comment on Hawk of Krypton's review of the episode, shedding a bit more light on the production. Effectively, they had issues with the script as well, but it really wasn’t their place to change anything, so we know that this wasn’t their fault, though that seems pretty obvious; an episode's storyboard artist generally isn’t going to be its writer. The more interesting thing that they bring up is that Death Battle has now, because of this episode, started to make sure that every script has people working on it who have more than surface-level knowledge of the characters they are working with. This seems to imply that no one working on this episode had much knowledge of Asura."

"Two things come to mind from this. First, why was this not how Death Battle was operating before, making sure that they had any staff who actually knew about the characters involved and adding input to make sure characters didn’t get written badly? Second, and perhaps more importantly, how is this the episode where this happens!?"

"And yet the really dumb thing is that Kratos does have the ability to argue for stupidly busted stats that make more sense than this!"

Among the MANY criticisms I have of the episode this might be my biggest one, there's like a dozen other ways you could've gotten universal mftl+ kratos that would've made sense, even with the people who believe he's continental at best would at least be able to kinda understand where they were coming from even if they disagreed. Hercules legitimately reacts to and blocks Helios light in his boss fight why didn't they just use the fact that Kratos is superior to him instead of that ******* """feat""" of him shielding his eyes after he was already hit I don't get it 😭

God man the writers really **** Kratos vs Asura and there the reason to blame. I say this all the time, but deaf battle is usually carried by the animation and music team the weakest part is always the writing.
Its baffling when Asura is one of the most easiest characters to understand and not like his stuff is Uber long either

Its legit crazy this is the episode they realized how badly they ****** up and try to get people who actually understand the characters beyond the surface level

DB already has budget problems, but they desperately need an actual writer. Or at least someone who cares about the characters to work on their episodes.

Mishandling character personalities is by far worse than any wank or downplay imo.

What I don't get is why didn't they do this before?

Bro, if they actually have budget problems right now that would be embarrassing

I think it was because they just didn’t have this problem before, cuz they had enough people into each character they were covering to catch stuff like that in storyboarding and scripting.

I feel like ive herd complaints on some episodes characterization before that, but I can't put my finger on which ones had it. I think the big difference was that Asura was  that straightforward that even Zoro questioned the direction they were going

refer back to “db fans don’t actually engage with the source material”

The only reason Kratos vs Asura got called out was because it was so excessively egregious. Most of the time they can just sprinkle popular quotes and references and the audience will be none the wiser.

Honestly it only felt egregiously forced with Obi-Wan and Miles. I don't mind otherwise, but those two relied on prequel memes for the former and the SV movies for the latter.
