DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

I mean I do need to get around to playing W101 at some point (it'd give my modded Wii U something to do), but I only bring up the Uncle Ben reference just simply on a count of how much the old Chaos Theatre era bought the game up.

Final prediction for the Death Battle. Betting wise, it's obviously gonna be Deku, let's be real for a second. But I'm gonna root Miles purely because that would be hilarious.

Quite frankly, Deku is losing this either way. If he wins, he gets clowned on for having to beat a street tier just to get a W. if he loses, he gets clowned on for losing to a street tier. MFs gonna slander him either way 😭

Just hope the next DB is more interesting.

People just have it against Izuku, it's kinda shocking. When he fought Asta and everyone knew he was done for, people was still shit talking him all over the place.

why so much hate to him?why so much to literraly THE KINDEST PERSON IN HIS WHOLE SHOW (yes i know there is like other 6 characters who are has kind, but man when you literraly at least fell a bit of empathy for a villain, no matter how stupid that is, that is being kind).
i don't really hate him or love him, but when people hate him, they hate him really really bad.

Because people don't see all the media and primarily know him as the crying kid that breaks his limbs.

Crazy that Shigaraki gets more respect than Izuku despite being an actual LoL player.

I have nothing against Deku and frankly people overblow just how bad MHA dropped off, but it still did drop off hard right around the time he started getting multiple quirks and even if it wasn't Deku's character at fault for the show declining he was still the easiest target to mock.

His 1,000,000% moment is still peak.

Because people hate kindness apparently. Like, that's pretty much what the new Superman movie is a commentary on.

There's multiple factors
Some didn't felt hori handle his character especially by the end
Some just hate him for whatever
Some just hate him by proxy given how folks bring up MHA as some peak shonen etc

I just found out this was just a illustration not something that actually happened in the comics

I mean, no joke, ever since forever (I mean, I remember defending Megaman X on people crapping on him in the X vs Zero comparisons since the mid 2000s), but especially nowadays, the internet worships being edgy, "badass", having a lot of bravado, being overpowered and all that crap to show how cooler you are than other people. Anything that makes you feel that you are better than others.

Why do you think people like Bakugou so much despite his horrible attitude? Why do you think Sun Jin Woo is worshipped in some circles, and the scene where he broke down in tears after finally saving his mother was so poorly received? Why do you think Kirito was such a hit despite his very vocal detractors back in the day? Hell, I'd say even Saitama falls into this, I'd bet a good chunk of his fans don't really care about the parody aspect, his struggles or developments, simply that he one-shots everything and that colorful and intense world around him bores him (as in, it's beneath him). I think the only difference is that since SAO's success, the anime and manga industry simply realized "aha! we can exploit this for sales!" and we got a deluge of the samey power fantasy tropes since then.

So being nice and kind, being sensitive and emotional is seens as being weak or a wimp or unmanly, no matter how many accomplishments the guy can have.

I don't think I should be the one to explain how Kirito is somehow blamed for the people who misinterpret him. Kirito is a deconstruction of reformist mentality, and how martyrdom and titles can ruin a man. Yet, all they see is the 'OP everyman', despite the fact that his W/L is actually not that great.

I've ran my mouth off about Kirito before, and I won't repeat myself.

This is why the success of Iruma-Kun and Ichi the Witch are refreshing to me. The first follows a kid who's had a god-awful life yet is highly emotional and caring to other people, to the point where he has a god-damn demon fanbase that hype him up as if he's Saitama (he ain't). While Ichi is commonly referred to as a dog-person given his animalistic tendencies and how he can be genuinely kind and simple towards people yet still be a intimidating hunter towards threats to them.

you know people should like Stardust, not because she is badass, but because she is a determinator who is also a all-loving heroine that basically accepts that the universe has bad things, but it also had good things, and is worth going for the bad things to see the good things.
sometimes the villains who fall from pain and the tragedy, decide to be horrible and treat others badly for not accepting their own pain (or because their own pain is so great, that they will rather let others suffer and not be the only one who does)

It's Like 10 minutes till the episode drops so I'm gonna go on record to say that I'm betting on all yall's souls that Miles is gonna win 🙏
a group of people are playing a video game and one of them is a spider-man .

On a serious note, I'm betting Izuku because he should, is likely going to, win

Member S8 when they used 3D for track art?

Well, I guess thats relatively good thing to save budget on...

That's precisely the issue, a lot of people completely miss anything Kirito may have going for him as a character and they just stick to the hype moments, stuff like his early victories, his popularity among girls and whatnot. This not only goes for detractors, a lot of his fans just stick to his escapist aspects.

Even in other works you can see the issue with other authors of manga and especially light novels themselves, you have characters that clearly resemble him in design, have generic personalities to try to be easy to project into, but without any sort of depth or development to be interesting, and just get a checklist of power fantasy tropes (overpowered, harem, center of the story, all enemies are strawmen he puts in their place, geeky references, melodrama, etc.)

Something I've read around is that SAO actively tried to work and improve the flaws of the earlier parts later on in the story. But this is something most would miss, as the general impressions stick to Aincrad and the second season of the anime.

Issue is... overpowered characters or edgy characters, hype and aura, and whatnot are not inherently wrong or negative qualities in writting. Like everything else they are tools and they can be used for an interesting individual. Same way a kind and caring character can be botched if handled poorly (from the top of my head, being preachy to the point of coming as insufferable or being emotional to the point of coming as whiny.)

I just think there needs to be more to a "cool and badass" character. What annoys me is how so many people just care about cool traits to live a power fantasy through their characters and diss any attempt at writting that does something different, or just ignore any traits of them and simply stick with "he's badass, she could beat Goku and Superman, they have hype". I mean, I shouldn't judge a reason why anyone likes any character, but when they start trash talking others that don't fit into their preferred archetype it gets grating.

I know I'm getting pretty obnoxious with this, but after years of defending guys like Cloud Strife, Megaman X, Luke fon Fabre for not being as perfect, badass or cool as the likes of Zack Fair, Zero or Yuri Lowell, insisting on how Guts is much more than a musclebound, macho anti-hero that kills demons, and especially not wanting to stick to the overpowered MC tropes of nowadays when writting for my college manga magazine and getting crap from it... this has become a pretty sore spot.

<_<;

Yeh... sorrry, won't derail the thread anymore with this.

On a personal level, I like them both, so I'm okay with whoever wins (even though it really should be Deku).
But on the other hand, at least one person on the Reddit bet on having to wear a maid outfit if Deku loses, and as a Maid Outfit Owner myself, I kinda wanna see that happen too because it'd be so funny.
