DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

This is an edited version. Here's the actual clip of the scene (S3, E16: Engine Blocked)

It's funny to think that even Butch Hartman himself was fooled by this, lol
Ye, the artist originally remembered it as 2025 and got excited but when they looked back at the episode they got so disappointed when they saw 2050 that they edited out of spite (And because it's funny as ****)

It might be nostalgia of all things, but old DBs at the time do feel different from ones today. Even the use of custom OSTs led to most fights having less downtime. Animations are more focused on fights, yet they are still not blatantly better than Torrian choreography wise, yeah.
Makes you wonder what fight he will get to animate from the goal reached

It sucks that the only notable VS show out there rarely produces quality hand to hand/martial arts animations. The most basic and standard way of fighting out there is rarely seen in DB, and with even when done, its done with mixed results.
Sometimes I feel like modern day Death Battle fights feel more like roller coaster rides then fights, like the fight is just the two characters going through all their abilities to show off they have them, like they are checking off a box or list rather than using them to actually fight.

(Sometimes the issue is the opposite, they either skip meaningful fight progression or there is never any at all.)

And honestly I think it comes down to fights being kept short due to budget most likely, and the story board artist.

Dont get me wrong they can make a few creative fights, Eggman vs Bowser for example, (but even then the storyboard didn't have Fury Bowser throw a single punch at the Eggmech), but it's choreography is rarely memorable and seldom goes past pretty basic stuff.

Going back to Torrian, the amount of fighting that goes on in the ending sequence with DT Dante fighting with Yamato against Bayo has more actual fighting, as in strikes thrown, than most entire fights of the last two seasons.

Like the ending sequence to Cole vs Alex is ******* phenomenal, but that's because that animators threw in the two actually throwing punches, something the story board really didn't have.
The issue is modern DB focus on the spectacle which ain't bad but from pure raw chorography standpoint nothing has stand out over the last two seasons beyond the basics stuff

Asura vs Kratos is death battle only real shot of showing strong choreography for both characters and it can't sorely depends on Asura blowing shit up 24/7

Either it is an Omniman vs Bardock or Bowser vs Eggman in terms of quality

You guys think when the Invincible war is animated they’ll show other image comics characters?
No outside maybe kirkman related ones nah copyright and shit be a *****

Miraak is fine from what I'm aware of TES. WoW's Cosmology section is weird af and sounds wanky. They try to justify the "1000D" thing over Palawitar's codex by implying dimensions must be referring to higher dimensions. The High 1-B argument is weird and the 1-A one is even weirder.

So I had this MU idea, thought it was really good. Overlord (IDW) vs Conquest (Invincible).

Theme name: Destruction Incarnate

Scenario: Both clash over a destroyed planet, with the both of them seeking to claim it for their respectives empire, inevitably leading to the both of them fighting each other.

Connections:

  • Both feature similar names in regards to conquering
  • Both are among the strongest beings of their verse, and have lived for thousands of years, serving a space empire as a being of mass destruction, with the purpose to destroy worlds for their empire
  • Both are noted to be extremely powerful, even among their own ranks.
  • Both feature similar motivations, in that their love of chaos and killing is their only true motivation.
  • Both are fairly important antagonists and are shown to be a nigh unstoppable force during their respective story arcs, overpowering the hero on numerous occasion.
  • Their actions against the hero would affect the hero for years to come (Conquest's appearance on Earth made Invincible even more brutal and pragmatic, Overlord's action would cause the near death of Springer, traumatising him and placing him in a coma)
  • In their first defeat, both were mutilated beyond recognition (Conquest had his chest skin blasted off, and his face smashed. Overlord was detonated from the inside out and was reduced to a massive skeleton)
  • Both would return again after their initial defeat due to a pragmatic individual repairing them and seeking to use them to protect their planet (Cecil captured Conquest in order to study him in order to strengthen Earth's defenses, Prowl repaired Overlord as motivation to get Overlord to cooperate in interrogation, and to find out how to make Phase Sixers for the Autobots)
  • Both are ultimately killed through somewhat non conventional means, as the heroes couldn't overpower them directly (Conquest was choked to death by Invincible, because Invincible couldn't defeat him in any other way. Both of Overlord's units are sent to the past and future, thus severing his mind)
  • Both have highly opposite relationships to their commander (Conquest completely fears Thragg, to the point of cowering before him. Overlord seeks to gain a rematch against Megatron, to make up for all the losses he suffered at the hands of Megatron many times prior)
I think the animation potential is pretty good and can allow for some really cool looking environmental destruction given the way both of them fight. I feel 3D suits this best, but I don't either have any good 3D models. Other than some fan made ones.
