Shikamaru shadow paralysis works by binding your shadow and once he binds your shadow your whole body cannot move any longer. It's not like your upper body would still be able to move freely just coz he only bound your feet. So simply binding kinshiki from behind should have been wraps . But he specifically had to bind kinshiki axe swing. His shadow even wraps the axe. So he was directly stopping the swing actually and not just binding Kinshiki.
