In their last fight, they knocked each other out but Frieza was able to retain his gold form while Goku reverted back to base. Does this mean Frieza is a bit stronger?

No, it's just Frieza is able to maintain his form even knocked out, he has done mental training in hell which allowed him to not waste stamina.
Or It's just a mess up.
To me they specifically wanted to show us that mastered Golden Frieza is equal to current SSB Goku.
