Anyways as for the ones on the list that I don't recognize:
I'll give it a shot:

1) I only know him because of the movies, and one book of the series.

2) What I said in a prevvious post above.

3) Conan is a very famous anime to my knowledge. My parents remember it alongside Jeeg robot, Mazinger Z etcetera.

4) A show that I've always known about since my childhood. It is also extremely popular in Japan to my knowledge.

5) Same as Asterix

6) I know him only from a few memes.

7) While I know the character very well since I'm a Godzilla fan, the most I can asy about him pop-culture-wise he's one of Toho's Big 5 (Godzilla, Rodan, Mothra, King Ghidorah, and Mechagodzilla), and he was featured in a few episodes of Courage the Cowardly dog as an easter egg. My dad also vaguely remembers him in an old Godzilla movie that he watched as a child.

So what are we looking at? Well known, at least 15-20 years old, and still popular/referenced?

I think it's just better to make a category with our "best" pages instead, aka one filled with our own calcs, and matches as well as activity. If we're making a category to "entice new and casual user" shouldn't we represent our wiki with a higher standard?

Even more of a subjective and controversial topic, as well as the fact that most new users don't really care about most characters with well-made pages.

Keep in mind that I am an American who isn't really partial to anime or other similar media, for context. That list serves more as a reminder that regional differences can pretty easily impact this list and the perception as what is "iconic". Sun Wukong is also an example of this, since I had never heard of it before the wiki but being a very important mythological figure in China and India means it's well known by minimum billions of people.

Cal said he was gonna write a short blog, I assume attempting to define standards.

I think there is a major difference between popular and iconic. If this list is ever to be a successful and less controversial aspect of the site, it's vital that we disguise this. If something is popular and iconic in a whole continent then it should be here but characters such as Luffy are just popular and in the mainstream.

They aren't really going to impressed by their favourite characters racking 4 losses and being scaled to other characters either...

Oh yeah I also have no idea who Ultrama is

I do feel like the thing I'm doing could easily be applied to more western media like comics and the movie characters from the perspective of someone outside western Europe and north America.

I don't think that most visitors will care either way about matchup results. They are not particularly important.

For a character with 2 versions on the list, I don't know who Sailor Moon is supposed to be

Well, I am very tired now. Good night.

I am neutral on Link (As I see arguments for why and why not), but Luffy shouldn't be on that list as discussed above.

Captain America, Wolverine I don't think should be there. Luke Skywalker should definitely be there. Hercules, Gilgamesh and Zelda I think deserve their spots there as well.

In hindsight, Sailor Moon and Luffy are definitely iconic enough. Both of them are mascots for Japan's 2020 Olympics. That says a heck of a lot.

I mean, I'm kinda refuting that. If the majority of the people don't know who he is now, they sure as heck will in 2020 when the worldwide sports show will have him as a mascot.

Not really? Do you remember any of the mascots from 2005 China Olympics? People usually treat them as "weird foreign shit". Yeah, sure they receive a spike in popularity, but it isn't lasting for very much

Also, iirc wasn't Jibanya one of the mascots as well? Should he be on the list as well? That's not really good evidence if I may be blunt. Tell me, should everyone here be on the list?

Point taken. The difference between the rest is, Luffy had some serious arguments going on his side even without that. This only helps his side. I remember before I was into anime, I remembered his face.

I won't vouch for Luffy like that, as I don't follow One Piece enough to really care that much (and if I removed Kirby, I could remove anybody). So if y'all don't think he should be there, I won't argue.

Luffy is in no way that much more iconic that characters like Scrooge McDuck, especially outside of Japan.

Scrooge McDuck is iconic in Europe, but I don't know about elsewhere.

I also don't think that Jibanyan and the Pretty Cure characters should be iconic.

Anyway, would renaming the category to "notable characters" get rid of most of this controversy, and keep it functional for its main purpose in the wiki, to make casual visitors more interested?

Scrooge McDuck is iconic in the States too, to the point where "Uncle Scrooge" is a pretty common phrase to describe stingy people.

Dunno about the category renaming.

@Darkanine

Okay. Thank you for the reply.

Uncle Scrooge is the character from Christmas Carol...

Also, renaming is fine. It removes certain merit from the category and is probably something new and casual users may click on. However, consider linking this category to the main page, otherwise it's pointless

We do link to the category in the mobile version of the main page.

What about characters that are considered iconic in their countries of origin (and, possibly, in some near countries), but may not be considered so in the rest world? This includes Reksio and Geralt of Rivia for Poland, Captain Sabertooth for Norway, the Moomintroll for Finland, Švejk and the Mole for Czechia, Juraj Jánošík for Slovakia, Kekec for Slovenia, Professor Balthazar for Croatia, Leopold the Cat for Russia, etc.

Ask various international members and they give you even more examples of such «local» iconic characters.

While i don't have any strong opinion about this, is this category really useful for casual visitors?

Because i learned about it only recently, and if a character is iconic, people are going to find them anyway, that's pretty much the point of being iconic.

During my first days here, i browsed through the pages of my favorite verses, then checked other popular stuff i knew about, but i didn't need any category to do the latter

@Ogurtsow

I think that a more widespread recognition is probably preferable.

@Kaltias

Well, it is a sub-category clearly visible through the characters category, linked to at the regular front page, and is directly linked via the mobile version, but I suppose that you have a point. I just thought that it would be convenient for our visitors to know which mainstream popular characters that we have available.

My point was more that people don't need to know which popular characters we have via a category because they'll find them if they are interested.

For example, take Conan Edogawa. I watched Detective Conan since I was a toddler, but I never actually checked if he had a page until today because I wasn't interested.

Meanwhile I checked Goku's profile like, 20 minutes after I discovered the wiki, because I was interested.

I suppose that is a fair point. Maybe it was a bad idea from me to create the category.

Oh well, at least my gradual redesign of the front page should probably help us out.

@Antvasima

Would most of Eastern Europe, Central and North Asia be enough to classify? That area includes about 300 million people.
