He was, it was a form of self punishment he put on himself after killing Akira and then subconsciously causing the disaster that started the events of Violance Jack. His subconscious split himself into multiple personas such as the slum king and the nugget as a way to torture himself.

Completely unrelated to anything, but after my rewatch of the current state of Attack on Titan, I have come to the conclusion that we have horrifically lowballed Ymir Fritz and the coordinate if 'time is a 4th dimension' and the series narrative retcons are to be believed.
