Doesn't help that Sega is going to do nothing with him
At least he keeps Blaze, Silver and Eggman Nega company in the "wasted potential" waiting room of major characters that Sega straight up have zero long term plans for but still regularly bait fans with (especially Silver and Metal fans), that
something very major may happen with them in the games but it's usually being a "moderately" important NPC (if they're lucky).
Let's be real, outside the very first arc in IDW, the only major characterization Metal got in over 5 years of IDW comics was him dipping his hand into the Metal Virus and the realization he'll never be a true living being no matter how much he wants to be the "true" Sonic since the virus only affects the biologically alive (all without uttering a single word) and this was a short story in the annual.
Still better than being stuck the forgotten room (I guess?) with the Freedom Fighters or the classic room with Ray, Mighty, Honey, etc.

Are there MUs you like and/or want to see because your character/verse would win or at least look cool.
I'll admit while I still vehemently dislike Blaze Vs Starfire as a MU, Blaze actually winning the fight, her character getting more respect than Sega have giving her in nearly 20 years and Josh not going "lol Archie scaling" (even though Archie Blaze is a jobber) or "lol DC herald scaling" (even though Starfire is also a jobber) was sublime.
It's still pretty messed up that
underused female protagonists that were victims of bad to possibly to just straight up sexist writing is one of that MUs connections (Blaze getting fridged in Sonic 06 for Silver's development and Starfire repeatedly getting overly sexualized despite all the trauma she went through). Also the fact even Sega and DC acknowledge Blaze and Starfire have clear parallels (Blaze is dressed up as Starfire in the 2nd part of the DCxSonic crossover comic), says it all tbh.
On a side note, while the original Teen Titans cartoon is one of the prime examples of the adaptation being
better than (or at least on par with) the source material, that fact Starfire was the only core member of the team to not get a dedicated season to her backstory/lore and it being rumoured season 6 would've been Starfire focused had the show not been cancelled at the end of season 5, never fails to make me seethe.
