DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

MvS3 in Reddit is requested, but there are still Mario supporters arguing it.

SephirothVergil is great but selfishly I wish itd have more variation in battleground. They mostly stay in one location, would have been cool to see more ala ColeAlex. Maybe SephVerg is MU that doesnt need it, but I dunno.

Also tbh most DBs nowadays are in range of 6-8 on average. For few mins of animation for free a lot of eps are not that bad. Esp. if you are harsher on non-good older eps.
 
I think that the most important part of Death Battle, the fights, aren't as good as they were during the Torrian era. Maybe some part of that is nostalgia, but I think most of it genuinely just comes down to Torrian being that guy and him leaving left unfairly large shoes to fill.

That being said, as much as I think modern Death Battle feels too high on itself and has become a brand that has lost the earnestness and sense of improvement that it used to despite being technically more indie than ever, I am consistently impressed by the soundtracks and while it's not a high bar the clear the research is better than it used to be.

I've seen some Indie animations with better fight choreography than the ones we see on DB

It's not that Torrian has very big shoes to fill; DB simply isn't hiring animators who specialize in this sort of thing. Moro seems to be the exception to this, in my opinion. Eggman vs Bowser easily rivals, if not surpass a lot of Torrian's own episodes.
 
While imo you're average modern Death Battle fight is like a 6.5/10, you're average soundtrack is like an 8.5 out of 10, which is nuts. Brandon's a goat.

Hopefully we are in a new era of Death Battle fights and we get to see animators like SXR and Moro continue to hone their craft, hell bring new animators on, Death Battle has gotten bigger and bigger, I think there needs to be a more robust animating and writing team. And research team lmao. If Death Battle wants to be it's own brand, then I will hold it to a higher standard than I did when it was twinkle in Screw Attack/Rooster Teeth's eye.

I desperately want Death Battle to succeed. I want this show to shut me the fck up by proving my critiques wrong. Clutch the **** up Death Battle and give us peak. Not 'haha look at our merch its the cinema meme' peak, nah, shit like Bowsegg. I believe in you.

Moro is absolutely a breath of fresh air. His special effects work is superb. I think his general posing needs work when he's working with 3D models since its not his wheel house, 2D is, but Moro is a huge reason I'm still eager to see where the fight quality goes.
 
It might be nostalgia yeah, but old DBs had little bit of feel that they werent just fight animations. With more setups and quiet moments they had different feel. Modern style is fine but yeah, its not like choreography is amazing most of the time. Moro is a big get and hopefully they get more new talent.

It literally is just Torrian.



Like look at this shit this was some certified Torrian shit.
 
To further glaze that sequence, Dante uses like four King Cerberus moves here in the span of ten seconds and they all naturally flow into each other seamlessly, it feels like how you'd actually play DMC and how Dante would actually fight.

Torrian was always a master at making characters utilizing massive arsenals feel natural instead of like he was going down a checklist including shit just to include it, (see Dak and Jaxter vs Ratchet and Clank).

The rest of the fight, where Torrian is more faithful to the storyboards, never has the same buttery smooth flow as this sequence.

WHY THE **** WOULD YOU GET TORRIAN TO DO AN EPISODE AND NOT LET HIM DECIDE THE CHOREGRAPHY

This might come as a shocker to you, since your disdain is only thinly veiled by your remarks, but Sonic fans don't instantly share opinions like a unanimous hivemind. Do you really think the cynical DB Sonic fans are the same individuals requesting MvS 3? Don't be naïve.

Still, I would rather both avoid being character-assassinated to hell and back.
 
Is there a verse thats actually justified for disliking DB due to continuous bad verdicts? :VV

Yeah, they should have shit stomped all of their matchups barring probably Voltron and the Composite Kiryu Death Battle used.
 
As mentioned before as discussed the biggest issue with modern fight animation is folks want the Sakuga,the flashing lights, the Spectacle over simple yet effective chorography


It's not that spectacle is bad, certain mu like Kyle vs Simon was going to need to prioritize that given both characters abilities and such

However mu like involving characters like say Liu Kang,Geats,Raoh,Garou etc need very strong chorography in there fights with some spectacle here n there

BowsEgg is an army vs army battle with dozens of different factors working at once that massively changes the potential outcomes. Mario vs Sonic 3 would be two singular people fighting to death ala the standard format. Just because it involves the same 2 franchises doesn't make the cases identical. It's still an Apples to Oranges comparison.

It’s more from my personal experience around the episode as opposed to the dynamics of the discussion about it specifically, but in any case I don’t have any disdain for anybody here. It’s simultaneously the case that the show whiffs on both series basically every time and also has very strange interpretive-filters which make them see matchups in a certain way which aren’t likely to change.

I didn't claim that tier, so much as I think the distinction between 2-C to 1-A is irrelevant without an explicit R>F statement and/or a hax list on one side the size of the Brexit Referendum voter list.

Although it doesn't surprise me anymore how people are claiming Xeno JRPGs go that high at their peak (god tiers etc.).

That I can agree with 100%. I don't think we've gotten an actually-good Mario or Sonic episode aside from BowsEgg. Archie vs Wally was fine for what it was I guess, albeit an incredibly predictable outcome. Edit: Archie Silver vs Trunks was also cool. Thanks for the reminder, AverageUsername.

For as much as I ***** about the NLF and just randomly saying Ganondorf can hit hard enough to hurt someone with supernova level durability, I think Bowser vs Ganondorf was good, minus the weird reasoning they used to have Ganon win and some weird ommissions in the analysis for both of them. Like, it's the accurate result given it's just base Bowser and maybe just right no matter which version since MFTL+ in general ain't looking so hot right now mariobros but wrong way to go about it lol
