DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

Torrian picked the mu
He liked it on the Eren vs Clive cast

On the one hand, I'm skeptical of the actor playing Blade. Yes, he was good, but Blade was always presented as a more mature character in the stories. The result makes sense, but I can't shake the nagging feeling that Blade was fed to a Mary Sue from some fanfiction (a superficial opinion, sorry, Buffy fans).
However, I'm very glad we'll see DanteGOAT in action again, although I would have preferred to see him against Kratos or Doomguy.

Could be aruged to be kinda close, can just as easily be argued Dante blitzes and tears poor Clive apart.
LS...

yeah Clive is only around like low FTL by the end and only has 2 avenues for low 2-C and while both are good and pretty concrete neither are as good as Dante's higher ends.

LS wise tho Clive is Class P from several feats but we got Dante at imm so like yeah he just gets ate up there too 😭

Is next time Torrian.
I may still take umbrage with Shulk vs Lightning, but at least it's an MU people asked for (not that I agree with them). This is... uh... another "who asked for this?" MU. Memo to Torrian: if you want to do Shulk vs Lightning, do Shulk vs Lightning - don't dance a 12ft radius around it on my account.

As for blade vs buffy, that... was honestly a snooze fest. Analysis from what I can tell was alright at least, with a few neat gags, but right from the jump of the fight, I was thinking 'did this really need to be a Death Battle?'. Not in MU potential or dynamics per se (I know nothing of either character's greater history), but in direction (it felt like it wanted to be, for lack of a better term, it's own thing, when the great thing about current DBa's is that they actually get vaguely straight to the point). I find myself reminded of an Overly Sarcastic Productions video on idiot plots where 'some conflicts could be resolved with 10s of punch-free communication', and that's another one of my bigger problems with the setup, not helped later in where Blade is halfway through explaining why he shot that wanton sacrifice, only to stop randomly then get headbutted/thrown off by Buffy. It was also out of line for Buffy to wise crack about Blade's lost head, when the entire reason she wanted to pursue a fight was because of one girl lost to the vague cult shit.

As a corollary to the above - Compare in KratosAsura when Asura first throws a punch, to when the actual 'Blade vs Buffy' part of the fight actually begins. Keep in mind how KratosAsura is also dunked on for being slow and clunky. I think you know what I'm implying.

I've also heard it critiqued that Nightwing vs Daredevil felt too much like 'two actors trying desperately not to hurt each other', and that goes doubly here. The FX are quite evidently phoned in, and they look tacked on as a result. See again the above KratosAsura comparison, and how few attacks are thrown there, it feels similar in BuffyBlade IMO.

3 or 4 / 10 IMO. That race for the bottom is going to be close.

Now if you'd excuse me, I'll be in HoodCal's Discord server deconstructing Z-A leaks.

To add to this; the Dissidia mobile game shut down in 2024 and Clive wasn't added to the roster, his appearance in FF14 was all in his head so no WoL/Primal scaling and his Tekken 8 appearance should obviously not be factored in the scaling.
I mean even if you were to use Tekken scaling to the peak forms of Jin and Kazuya, that still isnt gonna come close to tier 2 or universal, it would be no different from the tier 4 stuff on Clive mentioned earlier

Our boy Clive is the next FF rep and he's breaking the winning streak Cloud and Sephiroth set up 😭

Why doesn't Clive have a profile yet?
good question, I couldn't tell ya why since I've did like a dozen calcs that are all accepted, we have several profiles that are already complete, and all the scaling sorted, so I really could not say why people have not produced them or added the last things I suggested🙃

And hey if they're finally moving on from Final Fantasy 7, maybe the next Zelda episode with move on from the main tri- oh who am I kidding they're gonna give Zelda herself another shot.
At least Josh is doing Sidon Vs Undyne, so that's something (I'm totally not bias due to Blaze Vs Starfire btw).

Nah... Dante is just avenging his brother after his last date try to put a spell on him but she got blown away instead and it was hell to pay.
oh without a doubt but DB may make it more competitive, honestly for the higher end shit I could see DB potentially giving clive a MFTL+ speed meta
Indeed, who knows Omega might be Clive's "Sundisk" (I hope this DB meme never dies lol!).

I really think it’s quite coming down to like haxs. Death battle it’s probably gonna put them both at universal levels of power and it comes down to their skill, abilities, and experience
Dante is about 10 years older and has fought supernatural things at younger age.
Knows various martial/weapon arts, wider more versatile array of weapons, although Dante might be beat on items or even.

Im not sure on this, but I'm to believe Clive only partially absorbs the Eikons abilities, so I don't think he gets every ability from the thing he beats/faces.

For Blade vs Buffy...

This is one of those fights that could have easily been Buffy attacking Blade for any number of reasons other than a fight that could have been resolved with ten seconds of talking. As for the fight itself... You could have done SO MUCH MORE with the acrobatics of these characters! You're already using CGI for the breathing gun and the Slayer Axe's runes... Oh, and the choreography was... okay? Better than the previous Live Action Episode but that's REALLY not saying much.

Analysis was fine. Nothing special nothing terrible, and this rounds out to beinf... a 5 or 6/10 episode.

Clive, eh? Not who I would've guessed for our next Final Fantasy rep (I'm naturally biased for the Final Fantasy characters I'm more familiar with like Golbez and Exdeath, even Absolute Virtue vs Kerafyrm the Sleeper as a meme matchup), but I can't turn down some Torrian goodness. I'm open to the idea that this episode can sell me on Clive, cause right now I know literally nothing about the guy other than him turning into a phoenix and ... well, this matchup.

EDIT: If Clive wins, would this be the first instance of the generally serious character beating the generally goofy character?

Clive turns into Ifrit, his brother's the one who becomes the Phoenix. A lot of the characters in FF16 are hit or miss but Clive is easily the biggest hit, I'd personally rank him in my top 5 of Final Fantasy protagonists he's a pretty good character.

I thought the choreography cleared Nightwing vs Daredevil and Red Hood vs Winter Soldier. It felt like stuff was actually happening most of the time and Buffy pulled some wild stuff with her jacket and the axe with a crazy name. Crazy how Blade aura farmed for no reason but then immediately lost all of it because of his voice and got his glasses snatched.

Let this speak to how little I know the character, then.

I found Clive and the main cast boring, but loved Bahamut and especially Odin, I was so pleasantly surprised that Zantetsuken got it's own moveset. Reminds me of DMC 4 Dante getting Yamato, though no surprise there as the same combat devs.

Dante vs Clive I can see DB start small in terms of on screen feats before going into cosmic Feats
That's how I view they'll handle it too, similar to Dragonborn vs Chosen Undead. I think they'll mostly stick to stuff like Bahamuts Zettaflare being able to destroy the planets surface and the cloud splitting stuff from, was it DMC4? Been a while. And they they'll bring Mundus and Ultima creating and warping universes later.

How funny would it be if Dante can figure that move is like Vergil Judgement Cut End or at least during the fight he gets deja vu out of it

I like how the fight needed an entire setup of them killing vampires as a reason they would end up fighting, usually DB just has opponents fight right away. Felt more theatrical
Right? How often they think a set up that makes them fight logically and it was a good one, Buffy thinking he killed a human when she was infected from the bite of a vampire

Dante not fighting Bayonetta was a strange choice but I suppose the blunt difference in tier was too much to accommodate for so they turned towards Clive for similar scaling instead.

Similar reason why Kratos didn't fought Spawn again.

I know people don't usually like the misinterpretation method of starting a fight but I think the way they pulled it off this time was pretty natural (better than some of the other times they did it)

Which is just as odd because I saw more requests for a Dante vs Bayo 2 then I did anyone else as Dante's runback partner.
