DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

I mean there is BS there.

I thought Shulk vs Lightning was supposed to be your sleep paralysis demon.

We're talking episodes that have happened already, not episodes due to happen

That, and I am playing through the XIII trilogy as we speak and... I still don't see the vision, but that doesn't mean there aren't Xeno MU's for XIII's characters (Fang has a potentially good MU into Morag, if her character plays out the way I think it will).

In fact, Lightning atm I see as a character compatible with a lot of Xeno characters BUT Shulk.

For fun (thought of this last night whilst my stomach decided it wanted to do whatever it wanted), I was thinking 'hey, so if we ordered all of our least favourite episodes from every year (not just season, because S2 spanned over like 3 years + that & S1 had no season structure. See also Kickstarter era not really being traditional 'seasons' anymore), which would be our best-worst episode?'. Here's mine:

I'm omitting S1 and 2014 from mine, largely because S1 was held to a completely different standard back then, and 2014 actually slaps IMO (the only contenders from 14' just aggressively 'exist' in my mind, and don't warrant a placement). And yeah, you'll probably notice... a couple of hot takes on this list.
What’s wrong with Pokémon vs Digimon?

What’s wrong with Pokémon vs Digimon?
The evil Digimen won and gasp A SLAVE JOKE???? ignore the fact that Pokemon fans unironically used HM Slave as an actual term :V

I mean tbf it has some rendering issues and Red was a wuss, but worst of S2? Yeah right V:

What’s wrong with Pokémon vs Digimon?
Disingenuity among all else. Basically they pulled this PETA-ass 'Pokemon is just a master and slave dynamic' point, as if that would be relevant in a modern episode, but above all, they worded the entire Digimon verse being more powerful as 'the verse is objectively better' (at least that's how it came off to me).

Also, the writing just gives me a giant hernia. Tai mistakes Zard X for 'muh digivelution', when that comparison was specifically unfunny in 2013-15, you're really going to tell me it's any better now? Also, Tai himself wailing on Red (as well as the implication that this MU speaks for the entirety of both verses, when it doesn't) just proves how much of a false equivalency these two series are, and I've felt that way for a long time (and before you bring up Lucario vs Renamon, at least that episode is more focused on the species themselves, and not this nebulous 'let's generalize both verses' shit - yet even that hasn't aged particularly well because fights less than 2m are frowned upon these days).

Models look like ass for the season (seriously, how did you go from GvS2, which despite the alleged character assassination, actually looked relatively high fidelity, to THIS?), and I've seen people gas up the death despite them being the same people to complain about "generic vaporization death no. 926356e" (like dude, this is basically the same thing you hate). Oh, and they gave Zard more than 4 moveslots in the animation (like, did you do ANY research?), and most of the shots are just ripped straight from Origins, which Pokemon was trying to push down our throats as 'the shit' during the G6 era in general (side note: I think Origins was okay, even at the time, when I was trying to finish every meal they had). Not helped by the fact that 15yr old me recognized Xander Mobus and to a lesser extent Nathan Sharp (NateWantsToBattle), and... nothing intrinsically against the two, but something about the advertising for the two just came off like celebrity casting in a way.

I could go further, but this is the bulk of it.

I mean the episode was made back in 2015 not like they thought much about it how it looks s years latter not to mention 10s humor

I mean tai would think it's some digievolution he never met Red before

Ngl, if we were to look at hamfisted treatment of verses, I feel like a lot of old eps would do that, not just PokeDigi.

Hell, modern episodes kinda do that too, Homelander got "big fish in small pond" treatment but since its the loser HL, no one cares.

Even for the time, I hesitate to call it 'humour' or mere ignorance, when you stop to consider that the professor's moniker about 'some keep Pokemon as pets, and live alongside them. Others research them' was an MO as far back as Gen 4. Even if you want to say the slave comment just applied to trainers in this instance (it doesn't, but bare with me here) - you're telling me there's no difference between... say, Ash and Paul?

And for the record, I don't mind slave comments if it's meant purely as edgy humour - it's the import of the comment I take umbrage with, both in this instance, and in those who would cry wolf over it.

Some me any proof Red treats all his non-main party equally. Esp. Origins Red who caught all Kanto mons :V

I'm fairly certain they're left with Oak, similar to how Ash's mons get treated. It's not called attention to, in any case.

Ash's Pokes at least have been shown to given decent living conditions. I dont remember Origins showing similar kind of treatment.

But then, I guess they dont deserve the need to be shown that. Most of them are but a number to fill up Red's 151 catch quota :^)

I always hear horror stories of the Godzilla fanbase but maybe I am just part of the boomer James Rolfe type of Godzilla fans (Though I am a zoomer) who watched old DVDs of it as a kid and liked it ever since, but just how bad is the modern Godzilla fanbase? Is this like a case of Godzilla fans post-Reiwa being a lot more toxic?
Much like all fanbases, there are Godzilla fans and then there are Godzilla fans. I have no proof, but what I think separates the two is the gatekeeping. Most fans from before 2014 just watched the movies, enjoyed them, and then moved on. Others, perhaps those more desperate for community or something, decided that defending their niche love of Godzilla from any and all criticism their whole personality.

IDK how TOHO kingdom is doing these days, but that place was a toxic cesspool of weird elitism way back when. This isn't even going into the vs debating side of things, which tends to amplify the worst traits of fanbases, minor or otherwise, and makes them vocal. Now all those passionate fans who defended Godzilla's reputation religiously can argue how he solos fiction.

Again, no evidence, but basically Godzilla being so niche for so long quietly created a unique type of toxic vocal minority fanbase. I assume something similar happens for other niche things.

To play devils advocate a bit, that’s kinda unavoidable when it comes to MUs with similar concepts, ei. Shadow vs Vegeta’s “wow what a rip off” line(although a bit distasteful I guess), the Korra”youre no bender” line, and Giorno’s “a second stand” along with Joker’s “his persona creates life” lines

Yeah, but the GioJoker example is more said under the character's breath, so it's not like the other could hear very well (as was Korra's to a lesser extent). Shadow was already charging at Vegeta to care about what he heard, so that's not the greatest example either.

Tai said it out loud, and the bit that's supposed to be 'funny' just came off ham-fisted.

Feels being nit picky here

Miles' venom strike is electrical based right? What is the best electrical-wise feat Miles has done? Does it surpass Deku enduring the electricity of a lightning bolt? Because if it doesn't, then Deku doesn't even need Blackwhip Overlay he can just take a venom strike head on.

I.E: "Does Miles beat Kaminari, let alone Deku?"

Ngl, if it wasnt for BillDiscord, both ColeAlex & WileTom have performed on the lower side of views. I wonder if future poll winners could also suffer from lower views. Tho ig it depends on what manages to win. Still, its a not fun trend.

Ig Miles' Venom has hurt/KO'd characters who have some level of Resistance to electricity. No clue how their Resistances compare to Deku tanking lightning tho.

Venom strike being so OP and giving Miles the win is funny, but I'm pretty sure Deku could just, like, punch downward and cause a shockwave that kills him instantly. Idk why it's considered the big game changer when Deku's ranged options are very obviously more powerful
