It is unusual for me to hear this, because Dragon Ball is very unpopular in Russia. There is only one channel on TV, which sometimes (Once every few years) shows it (DBS), and he began to do this only for the last 8 years.
Of all the anime people I know, only a very small handful of people know who Goku is. And even fewer people watched anime.
I personally found out who Goku is only because of those animations on YouTube in 2013, where he fought Superman in the city.
