He had returned to the hut in the forest after playing his song for her that evening. While he was looking at the night sky, he noticed a cloud of smoke. A cloud of smoke that came from the palace's direction. Immediate he got up and started running back. He was faster than the wind, but when he arrived the entire palace had already gone up in flames. His eyes widened and his heart skipped a beat. Then he jumped into the flames and started searching. He couldn't find her anywhere inside the palace, so he went to the outside, to the gardens.
There he found her, sitting on a bench. She was quietly looking at the frogs inside of the pond, which was being illuminated by the fire. He was relieved at first, but then he noticed the large red stain on her yukata around her waist.
"Kushinada!" he called out.
She turned towards him and smiled. "I was starting to feel lonely. I'm glad you're here." her voice was faint.
"But, but I am too late..."
"Are you? I think you're just in time. Look, there's a beautiful moon tonight. Come, sit with me."
He sat down and she rested her head on his shoulder.
"I'm sorry I didn't come to visit you." she said.
"It's not your fault. A demon and a princess? It was never going to work out. You stand at the peak of society and I am a monster."
"And yet the stars shine on everyone equally..."
"..."
"Don't worry about me. In death I'll be free of these walls."
"You intent to leave me behind like that? To be free as a bird, while I am still shackled in chains?"
"I will wait as long as I need to, to see you again. But don't rush towards me, alright?"
"I'll try..."
"Then everything is okay... Thank you, for everything..." she barely manages to whisper his name before she becomes silent.
Izanagi looks at Kusanagi. "You think too much of me. I didn't do this for humanity. There's no way; I'm far too selfish for that..."
He looks at the branches of the tree that have begun withering away. "My real name is Yamato. Just before I lost her, my partner told me to try and keep living too. And I tried. Really, I did. For many years I wandered the earth. But I could not find a reason to live, I couldn't let go of her. Then I was transported to this world. I had already given up on life, Kusanagi. I simply wanted to do something for humanity before I departed from the world of the living. You see, I have a hidden ability, one may perhaps allow me to see her again. It crosses my mind that the being who summoned us might have intended for this to happen, but I am honestly grateful. I didn't lose our world like you did. Everything I valued had vanished long before that. I realize that I'm being selfish, but this is the only wish I have left..." he says before hugging Kusanagi. "...So you would you permit it, just this once?" he says, giving her one last wistful smile before he disappears on the wind as a cloud of little lights.
He didn't know for how long he was asleep, but when he woke up and looked around, he found himself inside a little hut in the forest, situated near a lake.
