Actually, for me it wasn't really the case. It took the second trailer to really interest me but I didn't know anything about them before and only made some research after. Same happened with the Guardians films, I wasn't interested in the slightest by them but after the trailer came out, I got really into it. Just a personal feeling

Also, some people might forget just WHO ordered the Eternals not to intervene. I mean, if my boss just happened to be a cosmic god and said to me "Nope, you don't do anything unless I tell you to", I think I wouldn't want to cross him
