Ballot Banter #35 Recap
Question/Discussion
Ember VS Sylvanos (Brawlhalla VS Rivals of Aether)- They aren’t familiar with Rivals of Aether, but it seems cool and the connections make sense.
Doomsday VS SCP-682 (DC VS SCP Foundation)- They see how popular the matchup is, and get the appeal of two nigh-unkillable monsters fighting each other, but they have no idea how to powerscale SCPs.
Slime VS Slime (Dragon Quest VS Terraria)- Sam thinks Terraria is a better game than Dragon Quest. He thinks the Dragon Quest Slime wins, though, since late-game DQ Slimes are generally more impressive than any form of Terraria Slimes. Erin says it would have to be an army battle, because otherwise “it’s just two blobs aggressively blobbing at each other”.
Morrigan VS Arcueid (Darkstalkers VS Melty Blood)- John is the only one who knows what Melty Blood is. When asked if the matchup makes sense, he answers that it does connection-wise.
Larfleeze VS Annihilus (DC VS Marvel)- They aren’t super familiar with the characters. Sam thinks it’s funny that one of the connections is that they’re both xenophobic. The discussion is mostly about how Larfleeze’s powers work (he’s an Orange Lantern, and he makes constructs of those he’s previously defeated in battle).
Knull VS Oryx (Marvel VS Destiny)- “I feel like they’re bringing out the more obscure comic characters”. Sam thinks it’d be weird to compare a Destiny character to a Marvel character, because Oryx is defeated by “four strong homies with guns”, and he doesn’t think any notable Marvel character could. Erin notes that it’d mainly be the Symbiotes vs. the Taken, which she thinks the Symbiotes win easily. At the end, Erin says it’s a fun concept regardless, which Sam agrees with.
Jumbo Josh VS Huggy Wuggy (Garten of Banban VS Poppy Playtime)- Sam and Erin don’t know these characters, but John does. John says he gets it, though he also points out the massive size difference. Sam says he wouldn’t watch the battle if he were a random person on the internet who got it recommended to him. John responds that they’d get kids clicking on the video, but Sam says kids shouldn’t be watching those types of videos.
Okoye & 4 Dora Milaje VS Hippolyta & 4 Amazons (Marvel VS DC)- Sam immediately says the Amazons stomp. Erin says that, if they are specifically referring to the live-action versions of the characters, then it’s worth noting that the DCEU Amazons are shown to be killed by regular bullets (which she thinks is dumb). Either way, it’s still peak human vs. superhuman, so the Amazons should win.
Angry Video Game Nerd VS Nostalgia Critic- Sam is worried they’d get called biased because they used to work with James Rolfe a long time ago. Erin says that, even though they’re personas of real people, they’re still real people, and they don’t want to go back to that realm.
Ultraman VS Evangelion Unit-01- Sam thinks it’s really cool, though the visuals would be weird. He says that Ultraman “might actually win” (I’m not sure if that means he thinks Ultraman does win, or if he just thinks it’s closer than it initially appears).
Rachel Alucard VS Remilia Scarlet (BlazBlue VS Touhou)- Sam notes people really want to see Touhou in DB. It makes sense and would be cool, but Sam thinks there are other vampire matchups they might need to get to first (“Maybe one day we’ll solve the Team Edward debate”).
Spider-Man VS Joseph Joestar (Marvel VS JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure)- Sam doesn’t get it. John says the banter potential would be amazing, but he and Sam both think their powers wouldn’t mesh well. Sam says it’s a massive stomp (I assume in Spidey’s favor, though he doesn’t say directly).
Zeus VS Odin- They think it’s the top choice for a second mythology episode, and more mythology episodes are definitely on their radar after how well Hercules VS Sun Wukong was received. Sam does note it’s weird to include the top figures in real world religions (even if they aren’t widely practiced religions in modern times), but Erin says they’ve already broached that discussion for Hercules VS Wukong, and they’d just have to approach Zeus VS Odin in a similar way. Erin points out that they’re aren’t many “canon” sources for Greek and Norse mythology, and the ones that do exist contradict each other, making it somewhat hard to research, but then adds that this doesn’t de-legitimize the matchup, and she’s very fond of it.
Eric Cartman VS Porky Minch (South Park VS Earthbound)- It starts with a debate about whether it’s Porky or Pokey. Sam isn’t sure how to scale South Park characters, since a lot of the most impressive stuff they do is make-believe. The questions of whether Cartman gets Cthulhu, and if Porky gets Giygas, are raised (they then say Cthulhu VS Giygas could be a good fight). Sam thinks the MU makes sense, remembering that he saw Porky’s similarities to Cartman when he played Earthbound as a kid.
Walter White VS Michael Corleone (Breaking Bad VS The Godfather)- The connections are there, but neither of them have any real combat feats. Erin says it would be “2 minutes and 50 seconds of them just talking, and then, in the last 10 seconds, they shoot each other”. Sam randomly suggests turning it into a live-action play about two warring crime lords, which leads to Erin saying it would be a live-action fight.
First matchup for the next Ballot Banter is Midora VS Blackbeard (Toriko VS One Piece).
