DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

Ash is royally screwed now, given Yugi has the Winged Dragon of Ra, who can do all this.

Why Guy Gardner for Bakugou? Is it because they’re both hot heads or what?
From what I've heard, that's pretty much it. Hotheaded and/or kind of dickish people who are still genuinely heroic.

Writing wise I think that's actually better than some of his MUs, but frankly, I feel like it mostly exists because people are still desperate for him to lose.

Throwing a Continent buster against a Green Lantern is crazy though
Nah, it makes perfect sense, at least, to petty losers who never got over being bullied in middle school.

I swear it's only catching on (and I use the term loosely) because Squidward stopped being funny years ago and Shinra was always a bad MU, even before it was a stomp.

Also inb4 "Continental is wank, he's fodder"

Apart from being hotheaded Guy Gardner starts off as an asshole antihero with a very unheroic mindset just like Bakugou (motivated by glory instead of wanting to help people) and is at odds with his more heroic allies (Hal and Superman)

Throwing a Continent buster against a Green Lantern is crazy though
Throwing Bakugo against a Lantern sounds like the kind of spite matchup someone who has very strong opinions on MHA shipping would do.

Respect for having Brachydios as a hard win for Dynamight (likely the Raging variant) but Groudon is turning Dynamight into a doughnut Akainu style, no amount of explosions is gonna do anything to a primordial monster that regularly swins in and around the molten core of the planet and can create a pseudo sun (easy win for the Rayquaza's toy).

Raph is likely Bakugo's best MU in terms of debate on who wins while still being thematic from what I understand.

Also kinda funny Yang is treated as easy win when a few years ago, the MU was considered pretty close though Ruby Vs Maka will at least provide updated stats on how DB currently rates RWBY at least.

Groudon's not an actual MU, that's just the OP making a meme out of no High Difficulty Ls. Someone else made the same mistake in the reddit post.

And yeah, as much as I still like the MU, Yang gets folded nowadays. Maybe Volume 10 will give her something to close the gap a bit, but I wouldn't count on it.

They banter back and forth with their arguments without really reaching a conclusion with varying levels of agressiveness.
Basically this.

You know that family guy meme about two irishman walking in a circle for decades daring the other to throw the first punch? That's those two on any debate topic including Pokemon.

Offensive Spells and Traps

  • Brain Control: Takes control of one of Ash's Pokemon for one turn. While being able to attack Ash with his own Pokemon is useful, it only allows for one attack, but can also allow Yugi to use the Pokemon he takes control of as tribute material for a stronger monster, killing two birds with one stone by instantly killing one of Ash's Pokemon and also summoning a stronger monster.
  • Breath of Light: Discussed above, instantly kills all Rock type monsters on the field, which would hard counter Boldore, Larvitar, and Lycanroc as well as likely bypassing Sturdy due to bypassing the 'cannot be destroyed by battle' condition in Yugioh (See Gogogo Golem for reference, it basically has the Yugioh equivalent of Sturdy).
  • Burning Land: Just a constant source of damage to both sides. Yugi has ways to regain Life Points though, Ash does not.
  • Clock Card: "The time on the field, past, present and future, may be freely manipulated." A broken as hell card from the original anime, one that lets Yugi do pretty much anything. In the anime itself he used this spell to revive a monster, then rapidly age it into an exponentially stronger monster. Its basically an unrestricted version of Time Wizard.
  • Dark Hole: Destroy all monsters on the field. Pretty simple. At least one Pokemon of Ash's dies if this is played, and he has no way to negate it.
  • Living Arrow: One of if not the single most broken spell cards in Yugi's entire deck. It lets him 'give the effects of spells to an opponent's monster', but in reality its effect changes every time it is used and it basically lets Yugi do whatever he wants. Things he has done with this card include:
    • Applying the effects of Polymerization to Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon and forcibly fusing it with his Mammoth Graveyard monster, causing Blue-Eyes Ultimate Dragon to rot to death as it was an improper fusion with a Zombie-type monster.
    • Stealing the effect of Pegasus' Magical Neutralization Force spell and using it to nullify and destroy Toon World.
    • Stealing the effect of Keith's Tribute to the Doomed spell and changing the destruction effect from one of his monsters to one of Keith's.
  • Makiu, the Magical Mist: A card in the same vein as Breath of Light, lets Yugi destroy all opponent's monsters if Summoned Skull is on the field.
  • Thousand Knives: A card in the same vein as Breath of Light, lets Yugi destroy one of his opponent's monsters if Dark Magician is on the field.
  • Monster Reborn: Lets Yugi revive any monster or Pokemon that has died at any point over the course of the battle. A major advantage both from a numbers perspective and a psychological perspective of bringing Ash's Pokemon back from the dead and forcing it to fight against him, and Ash would be unable to recall it.
  • Mystic Box: Lets Yugi instantly destroy one of his opponent's monsters and then replace it with one of his own. He has used this in his favor several times by just giving his opponent a super weak monster. Bonus points for this confusing the hell out of Ash as he would have no idea what attacks a Yugioh monster can use.
  • The Eye of Truth: A bit of a weird one, but still a major advantage for Yugi. Ash's party would be the equivalent of a hand in Yugioh, meaning Yugi would be able to see all the Pokemon Ash has at his disposal. This by itself doesnt do much beyond minor preparation, but coupled with spells like Card Destruction, Yugi can force Ash to kill up to six of his own Pokemon.
  • Magic Gate of Miracles: If Yugi has two spellcasters on the field, he can take control of one of Ash's Pokemon.
  • Change of Heart: A better version of Brain Control with the same effect, but minus the life point payment.
  • Chain Destruction: When a monster is summoned, it is immediately destroyed, and then all copies of that monster in the opponent;s hand and deck are also destroyed. A hard counter for Ash's Tauros army.
  • Life Shaver: The opponent must discard one card per turn. For Ash the equivalent would be sacrificing one Pokemon from his party per turn.
  • Soul Taker: Destroys one monster.
  • Magician's Selection: Negates the attack of one monster and destroys it if Yugi has a spellcaster on the field.
Defensive Spells and Traps

  • Spellbinding Circle: A basic utility trap, prevents one Pokemon from attacking. Would be countered by Ash just switching out his Pokemon but still a semi-effective stall tactic and a way to burn an attack from Ash.
  • Swords of Revealing Light: This is one of the spells that really hits home how badly disadvantaged Ash is without spells of his own. Yugi can basically just do whatever he wants for three turns and Ash cant do anything to stop him as all he has are his Pokemon.
  • Mirror Force: A heavy hitting card for Yugi and another card that showcases Ash's disadvantage from lack of negation spells. Basically just instantly killing one of Ash's Pokemon, potentially multiple if he has that many out at one time for some reason.
  • Magical Hats: A defensive stall spell, forcing Ash to attack one of four Hat Tokens at random while negating the damage done to Yugi and activating the spell or trap concealed within the hats if Ash chooses wrong.
  • Marshmallon Glasses: Another example of Ash's disadvantage from lack of spell cards. Forces the opponent to only attack Marshmallon (Which cannot be destroyed by battle). If Yugi pulls this combo off, Ash cannot do anything but attack Marshmallon pointlessly for the rest of the fight.
  • Magic Cylinder: Negates an attack used against Yugi and redirects it at the opponent directly, bypassing their monsters.
  • Metalhold the Moving Blockade: Basically a more complex Magician's Valkyria with the same effect. Ca be comboed with it though, preventing Ash from attacking for the rest of the fight.
  • Time Seal: Traps the opponent in a temporary timestop.
Offensive Effect Monsters:

  • Catapult Turtle: A solid defensive monster with a once per turn ability that lets Yugi potentially deal constant damage to Ash every turn. Can be used in conjunction with Brain Control, Monster Reborn, or Change of Heart in order to use Ash's own Pokemon as ammunition.
  • Dark Magician Girl the Dragon Knight: Can instantly destroy one opponent's monster per turn as long as Yugi has one card to discard. This card can still attack after doing this as well, and is on par with the Egyptian Gods Cards in power.
  • Old Vindictive Magician: Can instantly destroy one monster by being flip summoned. Yugi's version of Man-Eater Bug.
  • Royal Straight Slasher: A very complex card to summon and use, but can instantly destroy all cards the opponent controls, including monsters.
  • Gandora, The Dragon of Destruction: Destroys all monsters on the field when summoned and banishes them.
  • Gandora X, The Demolition Dragon of Destruction: The Cooler Gandora. Destroys all monsters on the field and deals damage to the opponent equal to the attack power of the strongest monster destroyed.
  • Morphing Jar: Similar to Card Destruction, this forces Ash to kill his own Pokemon by 'discarding them',
  • Cyber Jar: Destroys all monsters on the field, then summons up to five weak monsters for both the user and the opponent. Under the proper circumstances, if this is comboed with another board wipe spell, Yugi has the potential to kill up to ten of Ash's Pokemon in one turn.
  • Black Luster Soldier - Envoy of the Beginning: Can banish one opponent's monster per turn.
  • 4-Starred Ladybug of Doom: A weaker version of Old Vindictive Magician, instantly destroys weaker Pokemon.
  • Dark Magician Knight: Instantly destroys one monster when summoned.
  • Obelisk the Tormentor: Destroys all monsters the opponent controls when tribute summoned.
Defensive Effect Monsters:

  • Marshmallon: Cannot be destroyed by battle and hurts the opponent if they attack it.
  • Magician's Valkyria: Prevents the opponent from attacking any other monster except this one. If two are summoned, the opponent cannot declare attacks at all. Yugi can summon two of these and has used this tactic before. If Yugi pulls this off, Ash is screwed due to his lack of spell cards, because he will be UNABLE TO DECLARE ATTACKS FOR THE REST OF THE FIGHT.
  • Kuriboh: A solid means of stalling, by using Kuriboh Yugi is able to completely negate the damage of an attack. Kuriboh can also be used in conjunction with spells like Multiply and Five Star Twilight to summon up to five Kuribohs per spell, all with the same effect, as well as the effect of Kuribabylon.
  • Kuribee: A more versatile version of Kuriboh.
  • Electromagnetic Turtle: Can be used to negate the opponent's ability to attack once per duel.
  • Obnoxious Celtic Guard: Cannot be destroyed in battle by monsters stronger than it. Ash has almost no way through this monster.

I swear there was statement that Ash and his friends took a whole year to reach a location and the series still wants me to believe that he's still 10.

Deadass, Im pissed Reddit are iffy about Kratos getting any Uni stuff, but fine with Ash totally being Universal with infinite speed to boot.

Imagine the horror that one day, there will be a MU that you think A wins, but everyone else thinks B wins easily. That day, you too will become a Weekly if you want to argue that A wins.

A few minor nitpicks as another Duel Monsters fan, which don't ruin your argument, but I figure you may want to adjust in your notes, presuming you have all this on standby for copy-pasting:

-Makiu, the Magical Mist: A card in the same vein as Breath of Light, lets Yugi destroy all opponent's monsters if Summoned Skull is on the field.
This one may depend on if you use the real or anime version. If you use the real effect, you have to find a way to account for comparing Summoned Skull's attack to each Pokemon's defense. On the other hand, the anime version has been used to nullify Thousand Dragon's Gust attack (though it required to Dark Sage to time it properly) and amp up Electricity moves (like Summoned Skull's), so would still be useful.

-Chain Destruction: When a monster is summoned, it is immediately destroyed, and then all copies of that monster in the opponent;s hand and deck are also destroyed. A hard counter for Ash's Tauros army.
Only the copies get destroyed; the summoned monster is left alone, so it would potentially destroy all of Ash's Tauros except the first, funny enough. You'd also possibly need a way to equalize for the "2000 or less Attack" aspect of the card.

-Life Shaver: The opponent must discard one card per turn. For Ash the equivalent would be sacrificing one Pokemon from his party per turn.
Kind of. Card text is a little confusing, but this card forces the opponent to discard cards equal to the number of turns it has been face-down on the field (e.g. if Yugi sets this card and waits 3 turns, the opponent has to discard 3 cards when it is activated)

-Magician's Selection: Negates the attack of one monster and destroys it if Yugi has a spellcaster on the field.
Only if the attack target itself is a Spellcaster; also destroys the monster with the least attack, if Ash were to have multiple on the field.

-4-Starred Ladybug of Doom: A weaker version of Old Vindictive Magician, instantly destroys weaker Pokemon.
Probably would not work on Ash's Pokemon, since it very specifically works on "Level 4" monsters, which is a specific attribute to many Yu-Gi-Oh monsters. This is actually important even within the game, because 4SLBOD does not work at all on 4-Star Xyz Monsters, since they have "Ranks" instead of "Levels". I'm pretty sure he also only ever used this in the virtual world in a non-duel setting anyway, so it's not a standard card for him.

-Obelisk the Tormentor: Destroys all monsters the opponent controls when tribute summoned.
You have to tribute 2 additional monsters after it has been summoned to activate this effect; this effect is separate from its summoning conditions.

-Magician's Valkyria: Prevents the opponent from attacking any other monster except this one.
This might actually have a work-around, since targeting has linguistic implications in DM, and this lock takes advantage of the fact that Monsters can only attack one specific 'target' at a time. However, certain moves in Pokemon such as Surf attack multiple Pokemon at once, and could be used as a loophole. (Might also apply to Marshmallon Glasses lock as well.) It also only protects face-up Spellcaster monsters; all other monster types (and set Spellcasters) would be valid targets.

Otherwise, looks good. Reading all these definitely makes me curious about how they're going to set up the fight, considering the wildly different mechanics Duel Monsters and Pokemon run on.

Yes and no, this list is a bit outdated but its the only semicomplete one i have on hand, the other one is being worked on by a group

Offensive Spells and Traps...
Not arguing about the match-up tho I found it neat that in the Millennium World arc, Mahado & Mana/the Dark Magician Duo could use some spells under their own power or Kuriboh multiplying as a means of defense against stronger enemies.

Basically this.

You know that family guy meme about two irishman walking in a circle for decades daring the other to throw the first punch? That's those two on any debate topic including Pokemon.
Lol, I was mostly joking on how nobody concedes in these debates.

Though your scenario is a lot funnier, ngl.

The big question I have is how they are going to interpret Yugi's cards. More specifically, how they would translate from the Duel Monsters game into an actual fight. IIRC we've seen some in filler like Swords of Revealing Light or Mirror Force, but stuff that affects the players hand, level/attribute specific effects and such. At times I worry a bit DB might simply skip them over and consider them unapplicable to a fight due to being too reliant on the mechanics of the game or something of the sort, which is an argument I've seen a couple of times.

Monsters are more straightforward given we've seen them being used and their effects brought up outside the game in the Millenium World and other instances, at least. IIRC, Bakura absolutely loved abusing Diabound's abilities.

Would “destroying” a Pokémon via a card actually kill it tho? Because in Yugioh, the monster and its card still exists, you just can’t use it in that match anymore unless you do blah blah blah. So how does that play into things

Honestly the most exciting think about Ash vs Yugi is how they'll handle the rules of each series, will they just do "lol verse equalisation" and call it a day? Try and see what's similar enough to use and dismiss arguments on both sides if they think said arguments don't work outside their respective universes?

Which is why they shouldn't have done this MU tbh.
