DEATH BATTLE! Discussion Thread (All-time Death Battle Spoilers Alert)

For what it’s worth I don’t think this person understands this site’s 1-A standards even though they say they do after skimming this. Their discussion on the distinction between “grounded” 1-As and “abstracted” 1-As is just one example.

So question for the Godzilla fans here on the thread. I watched minus one and love the movie and also recently watched shin Godzilla I liked it a lot. Where should I go next for the other Godzilla movies?

The original 1954 might be worth it? It has some pretty aged special effects but it preserves pretty well the human drama, despair of destruction and has a very strong angle of Godzilla as a tragic monster.

Nobody does. Outer scaling has been a misunderstood meme for as long as the term has existed. There won't ever be a single accepted definition for it lol

I agree with that to be fair, but it’s a separate conversation when someone tries to use certain already defined standards someone has already written up and tries to game them for one setting as opposed to another. So saying “yes but there are different kinds of Outerversal because reasons” isn’t really that sensical in my opinion under that same logic.

It still sounds weird that there are layers of Outer, unless its like, layers of existence?
It's how it's treated on this site. I'm pretty sure Death Battle just treats all Outer as Outer, and I agree tbh. At a certain point I think Outer should just be a single tier, no divisions, all the same level. I don't wanna hear any "beyond fiction", "transfinite layers into High Outer", or "meta-meta-meta-realities" brainrot

I feel like there might be arguments for some layers of existence, but in practice basically no one should be that. Hell in DBs, its mostly Galactus, Unicron and funnily enough if used, Godzilla Ultima that have actual credence to be real higher dimensional / beyond existence beings. Even characters who should scale in AP, should never be in practice have for durability, since most characters are still affected by 3D things.

What others have said, 1954 is essential. Dated perhaps, but the exploration into the pain of a nation that has witnessed the horrors of the atom bomb is unique to this film, and it matches the looming dread of Minus One and Shin. Godzilla's destruction of Tokyo is arguably my favorite scene in the franchise.

After that, it's really your choice. GMK, vs. Mechagodzilla (1974), Mothra vs Godzilla (1964) are all strong movies. Do note that ever single Showa movie has a musical scene. I don't know why, but it is what it is. Sometimes they're actually sick bops like King Kong vs. Godzilla and Ebirah Horror of the Deep, and sometimes they go on for four minutes too long and grind the movie to a halt like in Mechagodzilla 1974.

Still more lively than most Heisei films though. If you want to check those, I do unironically recommend vs. SpaceGodzilla. It may be nostalgia but the characters work here, and the plot is bonkers enough to fall in love with.

If you're going to watch Godzilla on drugs however, you should definitely watch Godzilla vs Hedorah. Greatest movie of all time while tripping.

Unironically Godzilla vs Hedorah was one of the most ambitious Godzilla movies and if it wasn't for how bonkers it was it'd be up there with 1954, 1984, GMK, Shin, and Minus One in trying to actually have a message

not new but kyle can go into the WL form at will

"Desperate attempt at clinging to relevancy" and yet Godzilla is more relevant than he ever was right now. Seems like a domineering and successful attempt rather than a desperate one.
Godzilla has been kicking ass non-stop for the last half a decade, if not longer.
