"Yeah..." Zlata's cheek grew red, as she put a hand on her chest, "It's like... my heart beats different when you're here..." murmuring with a slight pause, as if vocalizing her feelings through silence.
Her eyes locked to hers, she can't help but think she'd meet someone like her. Someone familiar, yet so distant. Someone so far, yet very close.
"I guess it's..." her hand unknowingly held hers amidst her sudden confession, "...love at first sight..."
Maria's world seemed to slow to a crawl as Zlata's words hung in the air. Her heart raced at breakneck speed, threatening to leap out of her chest. She was sure her cheeks were now rivaling the reddest of roses. "
Love at first sight?" Maria's mind exclaimed, doing an imaginary double-take.
"
Okay, Maria, breathe" she mentally coached herself, but her lungs seemed to have taken a vacation.
"
This is not a drill!" Maria's internal monologue declared, sounding suspiciously like a frantic air traffic controller.
"
We are holding hands. I repeat, we are holding hands!"
Zlata's confession hung in the air like a question mark, and Maria's brain tried to catch it with a net of thoughts. "
Say something charming!" it implored, but all Maria could manage was an awkward squawk that sounded like a startled parrot.
As Zlata's hand tightened around hers, Maria's heart did a somersault.
"
Okay, Plan B" her brain insisted, "
We go for the classic '
I feel the same way.'
It's tried and tested!"
But the words refused to leave her lips. They hung in the air, a tantalizing promise just out of reach.
It was as if her vocal cords had decided to stage a rebellion.
Then came the moment of truth, where Zlata's eyes bore into hers with a mixture of anticipation and, if Maria dared to believe it, affection.
She forced a smile, hoping it came off as supportive rather than entirely unhinged.
...
Everything seemed a bit too vivid, as if reality had cranked up the saturation levels just for kicks.
And then it happened, two miniature versions of herself materialized on her shoulders.
One, looking prim and composed in a blazer, cleared her throat with exaggerated seriousness.
"Now, Maria, let's not get carried away. This is a delicate situation that requires tact and poise. Handle it with grace.
"
The other mini-Maria, a wild-haired and disheveled Maria, waved her arms frantically.
"Scream and run, Maria! SCREAM AND RUN! It's the only way out!
"
"Running away is hardly the solution. We must approach this with dignity and poise.
"
"Dignity and poise? Are you kidding me? This is the stuff of rom-com NIGHTMARES!
"
Pirate-Maria, swaggering with exaggerated bravado, chimed in.
"Arrr, matey! Ye be needin' to set sail on this sea of love! Show that lass ye've got the heart of a true buccaneer!
"
Vampire-Maria, complete with a dramatic cape and faux fangs, leaned in with a sinister grin.
"Think about it, Maria. A vampire's bite can be quite... tantalizing
"
"Please ignore these distractions, Maria. We need to approach this with the seriousness it deserves.
"
"Seriousness is overrated, my dear. Embrace the thrill of the unknown! And perhaps consider letting me have a little...
"
"Aye and I be thinkin' a little nibble wouldn' hurt nobody
"
...
In reality, Maria remained frozen, her features locked in an uncanny smile.
