Once and Future King was one of the very few school assigned readings that I really, geniunely enjoyed, although it would later be one-uped by Fight Club.

Nonetheless, I realized when I came to this site that hax... well, hax wins matches. And Merlyn, from OaFK, has a good deal of hax. So, what better opponent, than his TV Counterpart?

Battle takes place in Burger King, both are 10 meters away from eachother and neither have any knowledge on the other, but both have acess to any spells or equipment they have ever used. Speed is equalized for obvious reasons.

When you make a VS Battles and advertise to get votes, but you get memes instead.

Honestly I'm not complaining.

Man we've memed on this throughly

What do they both do

Merlyn hasn't really got into a proper "fight", but when he's ticked off he tends to either BFR, turn someone into an animal, or give them some sort of disease.

His main gig is that, chronologically speaking, the fight begins after he has already fought his opponent.

Yeah, his precog is pretty insane.

It's weird because he still interacts with Arthur and co. normally, it's just that his 'future' is everyone else's past, and vice versa.

BBC Merlin (henceforth referred to by his Druid nickname, Emrys) doesn't like to fight if he can avoid it. And in the first two seasons, this gets him murked by a lot of people.

However, by the end of the series, he's willing to one-shot people right out of the gate whenever he's forced to fight.

Let me take a look at Merlyn's profile before I elaborate.

Alright, so right off the bat, Merlyn has a few major problems here.

Two of his options (BFR and transmutation) could probably get him a win, but hitting Emrys with disease manipulation most likely isn't going to put him down thanks to the latter's immortality. He probably just collapses, goes out cold for a few seconds, then gets back up like he's done with (almost) everything else that was supposed to kill him dead.

Merlyn has human durability and no real protection from anything physical. That's not good, because one of Emrys' go-to options involves telekinetically blasting the **** out of his opponent the moment they show any bad intentions. Another one involves striking them down with lightning straight out of the sky, or from his Sidhe staff. (I'll get clips for these in a bit.)

Emrys can also use time magic, and he's been abusing that since the very first episode where he slowed Gaius' fall, stopped a bucket of water in midair and slowed down a thrown knife mid-flight. He can also make himself faster and slow other people down.

Is there anything Merlin has besides his precog that might mitigate some of this? Because otherwise, I'm pretty sure Emrys is going to destroy him.

Time magic would interact with Merlyn... odd. If it's just slowing down or speeding up time, though, it should affect him normally. Anything that has to do with timetravel and time rewinds wouldn't interact with Merlyn normally, though.

Merlyn would start out the battle already knowing every move Merlin would make given his precog, and would likely go for immediate transmutation (He would know that the disease wouldn't work). He could teleport to avoid a telekinetic attack in anticipation or another targetable spell, I suppose.

Merlyn's dura is an issue for him though, Merlin doesn't have to do much to kill him instantly. Even then when Merlyn turns someone into an animal they sort of keep their mind (he'd have his mind altered as an Ant, though), although I doubt Merlin would be able to attack meaningfully as a fish or a bird.

This mind end up as inconclusive if both open with lethal/incap hax.

Yeah, that precog is really good. I could see him going for something instantly lethal right away thanks to that, but I wanted to mention Emrys' immortality anyway just to keep things straight.

That said, I found a couple of clips I was looking for, so hopefully they can give a sense of how Emrys' options work.

Here's his lightning magic. With it, he can kill entire groups of people at once just by raising his staff. The chick who yells "EMRYYYYS!!!" is also the same kind of immortal as him, and his lightning attack put her out of commission for several hours IIRC.

Merlin strikes with Lightning
Merlin strikes with Lightning

And here's his telekinesis. When Agravaine and his group of armed and armored guys move to attack him, he instantly wrecks all but Agravaine himself with just a glance.

Merlin and Agravaine - So it's you! You are Emrys!
Merlin and Agravaine - "So it's you! You are Emrys!"

He also has other feats like vaporizing people with energy attacks and causing flames to instantly erupt in a place of his choosing, but I can't find videos of those right now.

Killing with a glance might be able to outspeed some of Merlyn's options, and honestly that would make any of his incantations close to uselss. I'll try and find what Merlin can do without an incantation:

"Well," said Merlyn eventually. "It is far too soon in your education. But you would have had to do it sometime. Let me see. Are there two nests in that contraption?"

"There are two pairs of plates."

'Take a rush from the floor and lean it between the two nests, like a bridge. Have you done that?"

"Yes."

The place where he was seemed like a great field of boulders, with a flattened fortress at one end cf it—between the glass plates. The fortress was entered by tunnels in the rock, and, over the entrance to each tunnel, there was a notice which said:

- Transforms Wart into an Ant without saying or doing anything.

He does this again in Book of Merly.

This was actually the only spell that could incap/kill Merlin I could find that he cast without doing an incantation or waving a wand, and with the precog he would likely open with it.

Incidentally, the ant transformation is one of the only transformations that would alter Merlin's mind too, as he'd lose complete control over his body and straight up lose the ability to understand certain concepts (Wart could only understand things in terms of "Done" and "Not Done" while being an Ant, and couldn't control his body)

From what I see Merlin can win via: telekinesis, lightning and vaporizing Merlyn via his Sidhe Staff. All of this options can be performed in an instant and with Merlyns low dura it kills him on the spot.

Merlyn can win via: BFR and Transmutation. I just dont know how fast these attacks are.

Its all a question of who shots first. Since we have standard battle assumptions and its in character for Merlin to attack with Telekinesis he has a good chance of taking Merlyn out first. Since Merlin can also slow down time around him, he is very likely to deliver the first strike.

I vote Merlin, unless the ant transmutation is as fast as Merlins telekinesis. In this case, I go with inconclucive (Merlin gets transformed into an angt and Merlyn is dead).

^Oh shit, I didn't know you were back. Good to see you, dude.

Yeah, by the end of the series, Emrys has basically mastered nonverbal spellcasting and can perform just about all of his magic without speaking. The only exception is when he's using his Dragonlord abilities, like when he commanded the dragon in that first clip to leave. He has to speak for those.

If both of them open up with those nonverbal options right out if the gate, then both of them are ******. Merlyn's precog and EoS Emrys' complete lack of mercy for his opponents make this scenario extremely likely, so I'm voting inconclusive.

So, what you're saying is that the Burger King wins.
The employees are just going to see an old dude and a teen look really angry for a second, before one disappears and the other gets thrown into the wall as a bloody mess.

In other news, man finds ant on his fries and makes a new meme.

I am mostly here to say that Merlin looks like the outsider from dishonored and I find that funny.
