If I may do a suggestion regarding the possibility of the bracket dying: Add a rule that after 24 hours the character with most votes moves on or, if the same number of votes is reached, a random character.

I have found that this rule works pretty well.

Actually, unless we stock up to 32 it makes no real difference. Whether 20 or 19, in both cases we will need some extra matches. (4 in case of 20, 3 in case of 19)
