This rule sounds terrible and unnecessary, how does one even go about determining if a verse is popular or not?

Bringing back a character I was spitballing a while ago, I ALMOST feel like Livewire VS Surge could work thematically, and give Surge more of an interesting fighting chance since no one can seem to agree where Livewire should scale, so Death Battle's opinion on the matter could be interesting to hear and a bit of a wildcard verdict.
Is there a chance as there are "infinite universes" in Touhou Project, not all universes are equal in size, such that one may be as large as Amitabha and others are just possibly a town hall in size?
Maybe we need to reassess what is actually considered obscure and what not.

I'm more arguing that Darkness Devil is the kind of character whose more complicated than just X character can hurt him which puts him one a similar level. It seems he's more complicated than that, like a small piece of his flesh made Santa strong enough that thought she/them could beat Makima which is weird if your under the belief that Makima and Darkness are in any way comparable.

Luffy really doesn't have any good matches, all of them are either matches based on tangential bull**** like naruto or Ichigo, based on his powers and are boring like Plastic Man and Mister Fantastic or are thematic but are a mismatches and either the character fought someone from One Piece already or have a better match up like Natsu and Captain Marvelous.
I don't recall any of better MU for Marvelous beside Decade and Zenkaiser and even so it's an same verse matches

It's not like same verse matches are prohibited, also I'd much perfer that over a match that makes Luffy vs Naruto look fair.
Considering that Gods become more powerful and defined when having "Names" and that a large portion of Touhou's lore is directly tied into the concept of belief from humans, I'd argue that their knowledge actually cements those details as fact.
Yeah i'm not saying Decade vs Marvelous is prohibited, it's all came to our preference in the end
In Touhou, common belief = reality. Since Amitabha is a stated God within the verse that's believed to be real, he would be real and would exist. Since he's stated to reside within heaven, his size can be applied to Heaven (or at least his SPECIFIC Heaven). Gods get proportionally more powerful the more belief & faith they accumulate as well, so the fact that characters that, as you said, aren't even super knowledgeable about Gods, but know about Amitabha, would likely cement his existence even more.
World can mean more then 5-B, you can go as high as tier 3/2 if they suggest in context to be about these or obviously as low as High 6-A, maybe less if they suggest too

I would say it has a decent fanbase in the Spanish-speaking section of YouTube. There are some Spanish-speaking YouTubers that review and talk about Death Battle and there have been multiple Spanish-speaking DB debunk videos. Unrelated but I am still upset about that time Ryuko Shion spoiled the outcome of Wally vs Sonic in his community tab just because he was angry at the research (He agreed with the conclusion)

Somehow I have heard that ROC Taiwan used to have a significant fan base for Death Battle - that kind of fades since the start of Season 9 - which sucks as Season 9 has some significant improvement from Season 8.

Ditto and for me those 2 people happened to be related to me. That said these DB discussion threads kinda perpetual loop back to this topic, so to nip this in the bud (again) just look no further than the ads DB uses and that should be a good indicator of their main viewership demographic is.
