Why did DIO survive taking Jonathon's Body

I need this cleared up, if jonathon was a hamon user and dio was a vamp, how did dio not just die when taking his hamon-infused body... Don't give me this "hamon is life energy when jonathon died he lost it" stuff because then how did dio get hermit purple after.

I am a jojo fan but still never understood this
