Just my headcanon but I think it's due to the flame bullets and base cuts still landing and damaging his pheonix form that made King not rely on anything more.

Zoro kept parrying/blocking the flame bullets and Base cuts with his swords so King used haki to amp himself allowing him to completely overpower Zoro.

I don't think it's common knowledge that Buso negates Devil Fruit regen so there was never a reason to attempt it.
