Didact

Halo Ur-Didact (Render)
We are Forerunners, guardians of all that exists!
~ Ur-Didact
Summary

Shadow-of-Sundered-Star, more commonly known as "The Didact" or his Promethean name the Ur-Didact, was a Forerunner Promethean who held an extremely high status in the Forerunner society as supreme commander of the entire Forerunner military. He wholeheartedly believed in the Mantle of Responsibility the Forerunners held to protect life, and initially opposed the Halo Array as a sin beyond measure. He was also the lover and husband of the Librarian. He serves as the primary antagonist in Halo 4 and the Halo Escalatio comic series.

Powers and Stats
Tier: At least 8-A, Possibly Low 7-C

Name:
Shadow-of-Sundered-Star, Most known as "The Didact", Ur-Didact.

Origin: Halo

Gender: Male

Age: 112,812 by the time of Halo 4 (Born in 110,255 B.C.E.)

Classification: Forerunner-Promethean, Commander of the Forerunner military, husband of the Librarian

Powers and Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Telepathy, Telekinesis, Technological Manipulation, Light Manipulation, Enhanced Senses, Information Analysis, Data Manipulation (Comparable to other Prometheans, who can create beings of pure information and transform living beings to data), Energy Manipulation (Capable of creating Shockwaves from his armor), Portal Creation, Homing Attack and Dimensional BFR (Able to create ruptures to Slipstream-Space. Superior to the Warden Eternal who can create, and throw a Slipspace rupture that tracks its target), Teleportation (Comparable to other Forerunner Warriors who were able to Teleport to other Forerunner Installations) Levitation/Restricted Flight, Reactive Evolution (Forerunners' Warrior armor could "evolve" during and after long fights), Summoning (Can summon hundreds of Promethean Knights, Soldiers, Crawlers and Watchers that follow his command) Projectile Reflection (Promethean Watchers can create Hardlight shields capable of deflecting projectiles), Immortality (Type 1 2, and 6, Master Chief stated that the Didact was only temporarily stopped after his supposed vaporization, WOG confirms that he is still alive), Regenerationn (At least High-Low, regenerated an eye, likely Low-Mid, comparable to other Prometheans who've regenerated from loosing body parts, possibly higher, even after having his body completely vaporized, Master Chief stated that he was just temporally stopped), Transmutation with the Composer (Turned the entire population of a city of 7 million+ into digital essence), Adaptation (Forerunner armor is able to adapt to various planets' ecosystem), Resistance to Extreme Temperatures, Radiation, Diseases, High Gravity, Pai, the Vacuum of Space, and Transmutation (Immune to the effects of the Composer).

Attack Potency: At least Multi-City Block level, Possibly Small Town level (After exiting the Cryptum, he was able to very casually ionize a metal barrier, capable of immobilizing other Prometheans with his Constraint Fields)

Speed: At least, SuperHuman movement speed with at least Supersonic combat speed and Reactions likely higher (His suit is far more sophisticated and powerful than Master Chief's, the Chief's suit by Forerunner Standards is considered a class 2 Combat Skin, whereas the Didact's is a class 18+. Should be faster than Kelly-087, the fastest Spartan)

Lifting Strength: At least Class 10 (Likely far stronger than Master Chief, can lift and toss Spartans like toys), Higher with Constraint Fields (Capable of restraining other Prometheans)

Striking Strength: At least Multi-City Block Class, Possibly Small Town Class (Able to trade blows with other High Ranking Prometheans, who should be comparable to him), far stronger than the Warden Eternal, effortlessly curbstomped Master Chief, on multiple occasions)

Durability: At least Multi-City Block level (Can take hits from other ancient Prometheans with no problem. Completely unaffected by Promethean weapons) Possibly Small Town level (Vastly more powerful than the Warden Eternal who can barely survive attacks from the Incineration Canno, should be able to survive attacks from that same weapon)

Stamina: Nearly limitless (With their suits, Forerunners require no sleep and can fight on for days. Unaffected by having a knife driven several inches into his eye socket.)

Range: Tens of metres with constraint fields, Multi-Universal with Scanners (The Didact was able to conduct studies on a planetary system's traces of the photonic realm, the Glow), thousands of kilometres with his ship's weapons and the Composer, Galactic with Slipspace travel. At least Dozens of Kilometers Area of Effect with The Composer

Standard Equipment: Forerunner Combat Skin, his flagship, the Mantle's Approach, and the Composer. Various Promethean Weapons.

Intelligence: Genius level, He commanded the entire Forerunner military for several eons and controlled the Promethean Knights for the duration of his return in Halo 4. Each Promethean is also able to control million strong phalanxes of fighters such as Phaetons. Was still able to function even after been driven insane by The Gravemind, and locked inside a Cryptum for a hundred thousand years to dwell in his own madness.

Weaknesses: Is egotistical and has a tendency to hold back against "Inferior lifeforms"; Anti-hacking system has limits and has been defeated by the likes of Cortana. The Composer is useless against machines, and beings similar to The Flood. His summoned Prometheans are far below his physical tier.
Caleb

Caleb Blood II cover art untitled
I live...again!
~ Caleb, shortly after his Resurrection
Summary
Caleb (last name unknown) is the main protagonist of the Blood franchise, originally created by Monolith Productions. Born in western Texas in 1847, Caleb's tale truly began when he ran across a burned-out homestead housing a lone woman, a cultist named Ophelia Price. After taking her into his protection, Ophelia eventually became Caleb's link to the cult to which she belonged; an evil collective known as the Cabal whose servants worshipped the dark god Tchernobog. The two of them soon rose through the ranks of the cult, eventually becoming part of the Chosen— Tchernobog's elite servants.

Sometime after 1871, Caleb, Ophelia and the rest of the Chosen were betrayed by Tchernobog, disavowed and cast aside for their lieutenants to finish off one by one. Caleb was the last in line, hurled into a bottomless pit by Tchernobog himself.

Caleb's revenge would finally come in 1928, the year in which he was resurrected in Morningside Cemetery. After a long and tireless rampage which saw the demise of every lieutenant responsible for the deaths of the Chosen (as well as countless other members of the Cabal), Caleb confronted Tchernobog and defeated him in battle, taking his life and inheriting his power in the process. With his companions avenged and the god slain, Caleb left to walk the Earth, going on to strive for leadership of the Cabal and a means to resurrect Ophelia and the other Chosen.

Powers and Stats
Tier: 8-A physically, higher with weapons

Name: Caleb

Origin: Blood

Gender: Male

Age: 181 (Stated to have been born in 1847. The second game takes place in 2028.)

Classification: Undead human, former gunfighter, leader of the Chosen

Powers and Abilities: Superhuman Physical Characteristics, Weapon Mastery, Immortality (Types 1 and 7), Healing (Mid-Low with the Doctor's Bag, as well as by consuming the hearts of humans), Forcefield Creation and Attack Reflection (via Reflective Shots), Invisibility (via Cloak of Invisibility), Enhanced Vision (via Beast Vision), Statistics Amplification (via Armours and the Life Seed), Absorption, Fire Manipulation, Energy Manipulation and Soul Manipulation with the Life Leech (Fires blasts of flame and magic energy which drain the victim's life-force and deal Spirit damage.), Death Manipulation, Distance Negation and Armor Negation (via Voodoo Dolls), Portal Creation and Chain Manipulation (via the Flayer), Homing Attack (via the Orb), Clairvoyance (via the All-Seeing Eye), Invulnerability (via Death Masks), natural Resistance to Soul Manipulation (Able to withstand direct Spirit damage. Capable of surviving the Life Leech's soul-draining effects without the use of Spirit Armour), Resistance to bullets (via Body Armour), Resistance to Fire and Explosions (via Fire Armour), vastly improved Resistance to Soul Manipulation, as well as Resistance to Magic (via Spirit Armour)

Attack Potency: Multi-City Block level physically (Has defeated his fellow Chosen in combat, all of whom are physically comparable to him. Tore open Gabriel's chest with his bare hands, along with Shial's spiderwebs that were capable of restraining him. Single-handedly killed The Naga), higher with weapons. Voodoo Dolls and the Life Leech can ignore conventional durability.

Speed: Supersonic combat speed and reactions (Capable of reacting to and dodging Tesla Cannon projectiles which, at the very least, should travel at this speed. Able to land hits on enemies who can react to such projectiles.)

Lifting Strength: At least Class 1 (Ripped open a corpse and pulled out its organs with his bare hands. Said corpse was that of a fellow Chosen.)

Striking Strength: Multi-City Block Class

Durability:
Multi-City Block level physically (Can withstand hits from the Naga, as well as blows from the other members of the Chosen and numerous other enemies capable of killing them), higher with Armours and the Life Seed

Stamina: Superhuman. Can fight for hours on end without tiring, as well as power through dozens of injuries without slowing down.

Range: Extended melee range with the pitchfork. A few meters with shotguns. Several meters with flare guns, bombs and dynamite. Roughly 150 meters with the Tommy Gun. Up to hundreds of meters with the Tesla Cannon, the Napalm Launcher and the Life Leech. Several hundred meters with the sniper rifle. Functionally unlimited with Voodoo Dolls. (limited only by eyesight)

Standard Equipment: A pitchfork, a lighter, a combat knife, flare guns, sawed-off shotguns, Thompson SMGs, sniper rifles, the Tesla Cannon, the Napalm Launcher, numerous dynamite-based explosives (including remote-activated and proximity-sensitive variants), Voodoo Dolls, the Life Leech, the Orb, the Flayer, the All-Seeing Eye, the Doctor's Bag, the Cloak of Invisibility, Reflective Shots, Death Masks, the Life Seed, the Anger Talisman, Body, Fire and Spirit Armour, various other weapons and items.

  • Napalm Launcher: A large and futuristic-looking weapon (despite first appearing in the game's version of 1928) which can fire napalm projectiles hot enough to vaporize human flesh all the way down to the bone. Its alternate fire lobs a giant ball of napalm which, upon contact with an enemy or a hard surface, explodes into smaller napalm projectiles.
  • Tesla Cannon: A firearm prototype which sends rapid-fire bolts of electricity at opponents. The alternate fire charges the gun for a brief moment before firing a high-powered blast of electricity in the direction of the target.
  • Voodoo Dolls: Small dolls made of cloth which target a victim within the user's line of sight. Once a target has been found, sticking pins in any part of the doll's body will damage the corresponding body part of the victim. (Arms, legs, shoulders, eyes, etc.) Caleb is quite fond of these dolls and tends to be rather sadistic when using them.
    • Against The Undead: The dolls' potency increases dramatically when used on the undead, as they have been shown heavily staggering zombies with a single hit, as well as outright disintegrating the bodies of undead enemies with only two direct stabs.
    • Death Wave: By waving his hand over one of his dolls, Caleb is able to cause instant death (or 'return to death' in the case of undead foes) within a single target, as well as inflict severe damage to anyone within a few feet of the victim.
  • Life Leech: A disembodied skull attached to a magic staff which can fire blasts of energy at enemies. These projectiles siphon the life-force of enemies and transfer it to Caleb, dealing Spirit damage to them along the way. Should the Life Leech run out of the pool of trapped souls used to power itself, however, it will instead draw upon Caleb's own spirit to use as fuel for its projectiles.
    • Sentry Mode: Setting the Life Leech upright allows it to act as a sentry turret of sorts, assaulting enemies the moment they step within range of it. When in this mode, it fires blasts of energy that deal far more massive amounts of Spirit damage per hit.
    • Shockwave Attack: Slamming the end of the Life Leech on the ground causes it to release a limited-range shockwave of magical energy to damage foes and hurl them backwards.
  • Orb: A small metal ball with protruding razor blades. The Orb works by flying out and attaching to a victim's head before boring into their skull and exploding.
  • Flayer: A hook attached to a chain which creates small portals with chains that attach to the victim. By flinging the hook, Caleb creates a small portal from which a similar hook & chain emerges to fix itself to the victim. Multiple chains can be summoned in succession in this manner, trapping the victim in place should they make contact.
    • Trap: The Flayer's alt-fire creates a trap which springs several hooks upon its victim, ensnaring them immediately.
  • All-Seeing Eye: Like a mini-camera, Caleb can drop the eye anywhere he wishes and see through it as a means of peeking around corners and/or keeping an eye on other areas. The disadvantage is the user is vulnerable while using the eye, and if the eye is destroyed or stepped on, said user will be temporarily blinded.
  • Doctor's Bag: A bag of unnamed supplies which Caleb can use to fully heal himself. A single Doctor's Bag can be used multiple times within a battle depending on how badly Caleb has been injured.
  • Cloak of Invisibility: A cloak which Caleb can cast over himself, rendering him completely invisible.
  • Reflective Shots: A barrier which surrounds Caleb, stopping physical attacks and reflecting the damage back onto his attacker(s).
  • Death Mask: An ornate mask which grants the wearer invulnerability to damage of every type until the effects wear off.

Intelligence: Somewhat higher than average. Possesses almost two centuries of experience, a mastery of firearms, explosives and the use of improvised weaponry, as well as a fairly impressive knowledge of showtunes. Despite this, he has made errors of judgment before, and has admitted on one occasion that he "never said (he) was smart".

Weaknesses: Almost completely psychotic. Most of his arsenal is based around bullets and fire. Reflective Shots cannot reflect fire-based attacks, nor can it reflect attacks that target the soul. Using the Life Leech while it's devoid of trapped souls will cause it to drain his own soul as compensation. Despite his years of experience, he is somewhat stubborn and straightforward-thinking, and has had moments of questionable tactical judgment in the past.

Notable Attacks/Techniques:

  • Heart Consumption: Caleb is capable of consuming human hearts in order to regain his health and energy. There appears to be some sort of power boost that comes from the act of doing this, as the game's story alludes to Caleb 'growing stronger' by consuming the heart of his fellow Chosen, Gabriel.
  • Beast Vision: Enhanced vision which allows Caleb to see enemies in the dark as if they were bathed in light.
  • Dual-Wield: Caleb is capable of dual-wielding virtually any firearm he has access to. This includes heavier weapons such as the Napalm Launcher.

So I'm gonna try and give two obscure characters a good fight. (IE me vs Mr King :) )

Both in character.

Both are 8-A

Speed is unequalized.

Victory by death.

Who wins and why?

Didact:1 KarmodF

Caleb:7 MrKingOfNegativity DarkDragonMedeus Gargoyle One DMUA Theglassman12 Phoenix821 Thatoneguy78

Inconclusive:1 Korudo Daio

Didact goes "lol Type 6 Immortality" and comes back. Then goes "Lol Composer" and Caleb turns into data.

But seriously though. Does Caleb lead with death manipulation? If I read his profile correctly, he needs to use his Voodoo dolls to do so. And with the Didact arguably being considerably faster, I doubt he will give him a chance to use it.

Death or soul both of which work

He's also considerably above 476 tons, while Didact is 226 casually

So they should be fairly comparable in power then.

The Didact has a considerable speed advantage. Didact>>>>>>>>> Master Chief, a baseline Supersonic.

Edit" missed the calc. But the result is only a little above baseline anyways.

KarmodF said:
I love how the first 3 replies on Didact matches always have "lolBFR", "lolComposer" or "loltelekinesis".
Yeah. The Composer is pretty much Halo's equivalent to Bleach's Almighty, or Akame ga Kill's Mahapadama. As a form of "Screw you, I win gg" kind of hax.

I could imagine the Didact meeeting Edward Elric.

"You call THAT Transmutation? THIS is Transmutation!"

I would wait until an expert on Caleb since his best weapon to use is the Leech Life thanks to soul damage and his precog. most of his weaponry didact resist and/or can adapt, plus his Summoning + Inmortality Type 6 makes Armor Negation useless thanks to his body hoping on Composed Prometheans that could easily call the Composer.

I'm busy IRL right now, but I'll respond to this when I can. This match is pretty solid, not gonna lie.

Alright, so, I have two questions before I say anything.

1. How is the Composer activated? Thought? Hand-wave?

2. How good is the Didact's Type 6?

1 The Composer is attached to his ship, and he can likely activate it remotely.

2 Kinda meh tbh. It takes some time to find a new body as far as I can tell.

1. How is the Composer activated? Thought? Hand-wave?

Like, 90% of the Forerunner tech. can be used with toughs, he can comand his ship in mid-battle, instantly, he can also do it manually if he wants but the former is more probable.

2. How good is the Didact's Type 6?

He can habitate on others bodies but prefers to comeback on copies of his same body and armor.

EDIT: Need to mention that when he "died" by the composer for the first time his armor adapted to the point that he became immune and only 3 composers at full power could Compose him.

Alright then.

For starters, the Didact is an obvious threat appearance-wise, so I doubt Caleb will start with weaker weapons in this fight. He may use something less hax-based first, but if he does, that won't be for long.

One thing that may nullify Didact's likely speed advantage is the Flayer. Each time it's swung, it basically summons a chain-hook that comes out of a portal and attaches itself to the target, and multiple can be attached in quick succession. They prevent the victim from moving, tearing off bits of the person after a (long) while of pulling. Notably, they also prevent teleportation; the Zealot enemy type in Blood II, who teleport-spams a lot during fights, is incapable of teleporting whenever any of the Flayer's hooks are attached to him. These things are also powerful enough to restrain Behemoths, mini-bosses who are physically comparable (if not superior) to the Naga, and I'm pretty sure they can restrain Caleb and the other Chosen during multiplayer as well. (YMMV on whether or not that should count for anything, though)

One of the Tesla Cannon's alt-fires immobilizes enemies, so that may also serve to mitigate any minor speed differences here.

If Didact's Type 6 isn't very good and it takes him a while to come back with it, then both the Voodoo Dolls and the Life Leech are bad news. The latter is bad for obvious reasons (Spirit damage), and the former is bad because it doesn't deal the kind of "physical" damage that would trigger Regenerationn. It hurts them with magic (the type is never really explained) and eventually kills them that way, and in Blood II, victims of it are even shown surrounded by glowing colors when they're hurt by it instead of being physically wounded. (I wonder if that should count as Durability Negation? I don't know...) And the alt-fire just kills the target.

One thing I'm a little worried about is the Composer. I take it it's in space during all of this? If so, there's a possibility Didact might activate it before he dies (if he gets a chance), and Caleb won't see it charging or anything.

@KarmodF:

Didact would be capable of dodging bullets even if speed was equalized.

@VersusJunkie:

So I went and watched all the cutscenes in Halo 4. Not gonna act like an expert just because I've gone and done that, but here're my thoughts.

I mean, I see how the TK will be a problem at first, but the moment Didact lets up (which actually happened in-canon; he tossed Chief aside once and then proceeded to leave, thinking the Slipspace rupture would take him out), Caleb can either restrain him with the Flayer's hooks or death-wave him with the Voodoo Doll. And he'll be taking the fight dead seriously once he realizes he's fighting a guy with TK at his disposal, whereas Didact is likely to do what he seems to do with humans a lot and hold back against his opponet. (Caleb's actually likely seem even weaker to him than Chief does, since appearance-wise, the guy's outfit and equipment are dinky-looking compared to even the shoddiest of Halo tech)

There don't seem to be a whole lot of "fighting" scenes to go off of as far as what the Didact does IC. (Which is a shame; I was hoping to see a final boss battle and got Chief playing "tag, you're it" instead) But even if we go by what we see, he seems arrogant and likely to underestimate his opponent, which is bad when said opponent is a murderous gunslinger who's comparable (if not superior) to him physically and has ways to cripple and OHK him.

That's my summation so far. But I'm sure someone will let me know if I missed anything.

Most of the Chief-Didact encounters are PIS/CIS influenced. When the Didact encountered Spartan team black on Instalation 03, he killed them without hesitation. MC and Blue team were spared because, main character plot armor. Halo fans would go berserk if they killed of the Chief, lol.

Vs battles take place outside the confines of PIS/CIS.

Once the Didact realizes a hit actually did some damage, he is unlikely to continue underestimating his opponent. Even against opponents he underestimates, the Didact doesn't give them a chance to attack. Such as restraining them, or throwing their weapons away.

Are there any scans or clips of him doing this that I can see? Not saying I don't believe you or anything, but I do want to see for myself. And I've got no clue where the hell I would go looking for them.

Also, one wave across the Voodoo Doll or a single swing of the Flayer will prevent him from doing much of anything to counterattack, and I don't see it likely that a warrior from an advanced civilization like the Forerunners will perceive a doll made of cloth/straw and a rusty metal chain-hook as being ranged weapons that can actually pose a threat to him. (Unless he's seen similarly primitive-looking weapons before?)

The battle happened off screen in the comic. But we see the aftermath, as all the Spartans are dead. I'll go get the scan.

Anyways, I think I may bloodlust the Didact since he seems at a bit of an unfair advantage here.

If Didact is bloodlusted, then Caleb dies exactly one second into the fight, unless I'm reading into the evidence wrong.

RIP quality. He seems interesting, but yeah, I know how it feels to have a character/story's potential squandered. See: Almost the entirety of Blood II

We can't restrict things anymore. From what I remember, a rule got put in place that says matches with restrictions on abilities aren't added to profiles. (unless said abilities are higher-tier or higher-dimensional ones)

The Didact has a lot of development in the Halo Forerunner Novels, alongside the Iso-Didact who is pretty much a clone.

Man... I gaurantee that if Greg Bear wrote Halo 4, the Didact would've been 7-B or higher.

So... not even equipment can be restricted? Damn, that sucks.

Wasted the Didact's character? Pfeh, those comics wasted a lot--especially Spartan: Black. I fell in love with that team's dynamic in the Halo: Evolutions collection of short stories that came out prior to Halo 4.

Off-topic, though. I'm gonna vote inconclusive--seems to be a win in either's favor depending on certain variables.

Even worse, that comic made an appearance for Spartan Team black, after their previous appearance was a cliffhanger iirc with no explanations whatsoever.

That sounds...stupid. Honestly.

Anyway, if it's in-character, I may as well vote Caleb. It's likely that the Didact will start by simply ragdolling Caleb with TK, but the latter probably sturdy enough to survive that for quite a while imo, and if Didact lets up for any stretch of time, his opponent will take advantage and use something that kills or incaps him ASAP.

If Didact stays bloodlusted, then he atomizes or BFRs Caleb the moment he sees him.

Either way, I would see this match added to their profiles, since I don't think it's a stomp in either direction no matter what happens. (They both can one-shot and are at least somewhat comparable physically, though Caleb's scaling is probably somewhat superior)

To be honest even something like Voodoo dolls would look dangerous thrown from somebody that looks like a satanic drug dealer.

The most likely thing is that Ur would Dis-armed him and convert his weapons and items into data to investigate, while Caleb would just get BFR'd, i also need to note that if he gets paralyzed he could transfer his essence to a Promethean Knight and call a new body and armor, unless Caleb's guns ar OHK against souls thats the most likely thing to happend.

He doesn't "throw" his Voodoo Dolls. He does this:

Voodoo Doll 1
Also, does Didact even know what a "satanic drug dealer" looks like? Because that would be kind of ******* hilarious if he did.

In that case i guess he would just do the same as he did with Chief and extrangulate him and remove his weaponry or something.

Nah, but he knows how the interior of an anus look like, shouldnt be worse than that.

Again though, it's a doll made of cloth, straw and bits of wood. What's the likelihood of him seeing it as anything but a weird toy, much less recognizing it as a weapon that can ignore his armor and kill him in a heartbeat. Chief had guns, MJOLNIR armor and a bomb that could clearly do damage if used correctly, so his situation isn't the most apt for comparison to this one.

>"he knows how the interior of an anus look like"

...That's an oddly specific thing to say about a video game character.

Mischeavous weaponry my dude, most of the times Forerunner turn any weaponry into data even if its something that looks like a stick, same thing happend to most of the Ancient Humans' weaponry after they acquired the Mantle of Responsability, hell even Speedwagon's hat would be worth the research for them (Dont take that seriously), I also doubt that he would let Caleb fight in a honorable manner to put it simple and short.

If you want i can go "deeper" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

>"the Ancient Humans"

You mean these guys? They don't exactly seem to be packing voodoo dolls, duster coats and dirty sticks either. Hell, judging from this page, Ur-Didact considered them the second greatest military force out there. It's no wonder he and the Forerunners wanted to analyze their stuff right away.

Or you could go
