Beast Wars, from what I hear, is slightly outdated, but still brilliant. Animated managed to reinvent the entire franchise and achieve a balance of childish and adult very well (you know, like a lot o' shows back then before everything became TTG-ified). And then there's Prime, which is by far the best animated series I have ever seen. I know that might not mean much, but other than the comics, which mind you are intended for an adult audience, it feels like the only one that truly captured the horrors of war and just how messed up fighting for millions of years can get you.
Hell, one of what was advertised to be a main character dies in the first episode. He wasn't killed to set the stakes much, they just up and kill him. That takes balls. And you can bet this show had 'em.
