Alright.

I'm having difficulty finding the quote about demons hurting their own partner. I had the part in my head and it vanished the moment I pulled up the source material.

And that last part is very true. I considered giving them knowledge that Natsu is just a regular dude they need to beat up, but figured it would be more fair if they didn't have such knowledge.
