UNDERTALE/DELTARUNE [shiny new] DISCUSSION THEAD

Since we're on a new page, & that video pointed it out, I'll reiterate here, too. A worry of mine that is.

Toby Fox is waiting on a "Game Change" Game Launcher tool to be publicly released from Game Maker's devs. That's speculated to be what he Tweeted about wanting help testing.

So Toby is waiting for the Game Maker devs to release that tool.
So that he can do work with it.
& then publicly test the work.
& THEN RELEASE CHAPTERS 3 & 4!

In other words, Game Maker ITSELF is delaying Deltarune!
....Or at least, the (in)action on the part of Game Maker's devs may be.
(& arguably, Toby's zeal for testing, but he can't use an unreleased tool anyway. Plus, supposedly it'd make file structuring of the released games easier for devs to handle.)

Thoughts, all?

Also, it's only mentioned by the YT's on-screen notes, but the sign in the room of concern also says "The darker it gets, the more you can see.".

The "Darkerners" theory is interesting, IMHO. Dark Fountains seem to make animate the inanimate, & the NPC Blocktree is an animate, kind of human-like Blocktree.
What does that mean for Darkners, who are already animate?
In The Real World, trees are technically already "alive". Could that be different in Deltarune's Dark Fountain world(s)?

An interesting comment I saw for this video:

Regarding Susie’s healing magic, Toby said this prior to chapter 2’s release:

“…a certain character will learn a certain type of spell that they aren’t really good at. Actually, they’re so bad at it there’s essentially no reason to have them use it at first. But the fact that they learned it and keep practicing it is really heartwarming.”

Anyone know the source for that?

Also, I think I've "gone down a rabbithole", considering that was recommended to me in the content of the video in my previous post, & the one I mentioned previously in this post mentioned:

Incidentally, the video points out the library debt & how Light World money is obtained. The means are:
1. Taking $5 from Asirel's drawer.
2. Taking Undyne's chocolates that she wanted Kris to give to Undyne as an apology from Undyne for running over Alphys's bike, & instead, giving the chocolates to Sans at the store for $5.

Both... aren't the most moral choices, no?
This feels like something that'd just get Asriel mad at Kris.

There's also the point(s) about discarded items, the knockoff controller, & the unfinished game.
Plus, the Youtuber claims 1 of the newsletters mentions "The nightmare of an unfinished game".

The Glow Shards were also forgotten, no?

I also saw this Youtube comment:

here are some things that I wish were discussed more in theorizing

1. [[It Burns! Ow! Stop! Help Me! It Burns!]] doesn't refer to the acid. The Japanese dub of the game has him say something along the lines of
"IN THE PAST, I WAS JUST IN CHARGE OF SENDING EMAILS, NOW I'M IN CHARGE OF [[Wait! It's Too Bright! My Eyes Hurt! STOP!!!]]"

2. THERE ARE MULTIPLE THORN RINGS.
If you beat up Spamton on his first encounter, he tells you you should have "DONE ALL THAT EARLIER! AND BEEN THE FIRST TO OWN MY [Commemorative Ring]", hinting at the Weird Route
However, if you abort a Weird Route and beat him up, he instead says:
""IT DOESN'T MEAN YOU CAN BEAT ME UP,. JUST BECAUSE YOU BOUGHT MY [Commemorative Ring]!. AT LEAST BUY [2]!"

3. The save files are ever-so-slightly different from eachother. While I'm not sure how important it'll be, it can be seen with Asriel's dresser, which has different dialogue depending on which save slot you're playing on

Honestly, I feel like we are getting our expectation too high with the theory making.

I feel like some of these theory would be coincidences that will leave some that fully believed it, dissapointed
Understandable. Not every theory can be true.

Any interest in discussing which & why? If not, that's fine.

nah, but cmon. this is getting a bit tirering to see such things
Fair enough. I do apologize if you mind me posting theory videos so often.

I just like to share what I find interesting, & I figure theories can help lead into interesting considerations which might be useful for our purposes.

& with Newslettes only every month or less often, not like there's much else to discuss AtM, right?

It's fine. Keep posting theories if you want. I do think that the DT community goes a bit hard on theories sometimes but it is the main thing ig.

hi, i have a question about chara. do they begin battles with nuking the cosmology in character?

Newsletter’s out. Most important thing to learn for me was that we’re getting PC and console versions at the same time, which is great because I have no easy access to a computer that could properly run this thing and I didn’t really want to either wait for the console version or pay double to get an unoptimised experience.

AAA I THOUGHT WE ONLY GOT THESE EVERY SEASON/3 MONTHS.

HYPE!

"This new function is… well, brand-new! It has never been tested broadly on many computers and platforms before! Therefore... we would soon like to ask for your help testing it!

It’s estimated GameMaker will be updated with the new command within the next few weeks. At that time, we will put out a version of Chapter 1&2 that uses it, along with some more detailed instructions about testing."

Goshdarnit. Well, crud, this probably means I won't have a system that can play Chapters 3 & 4. : (

"Chapter 3's localization is already amazing. Now that I can read all the Japanese, I've been able to personally review every single line. Oftentimes the phrasing in the English is very vague, so I try to clarify everything I can for the translation team. I know localization isn't something that interests most people that much, but I'm really proud... Original creators are very rarely involved in the translation process of their works this closely!"

This helps affirm Japanese language for use as sources, IMHO; Toby is supposedly fluent & checks it personally.
Localization example

Oh boy, rain-creation feat in the Dark World. Then again, Weather Manipulation is usually Environmental Destruction & classified separately from other kinds of Attack Potency & Striking Strength, plus the scale will matter.[

Rouxls & Lancer will continue to be present.

This suggests that bangle will be improveable, or get better versions across chapters.

Also, a bigger one could make Kris? Is Ralsei talking about a cookie cutter or something?

Battling may be casual for these enemies?
Though the dialogue also suggests their primary focus is music, so they may be better at music & not above average at battling.

"I think the characters will be easier to localize than Chapters 2 or 3, so hopefully it will be smooth..."

I wonder why? I guess a lot of food keeps its name internationally, AFAIK. Are there a lot of food enemies?
Chapter 4 is the rainy day, right?
Then again, you'd think Chapter 3 would be the chapter with more food enemies, seeing as it's likely the one with the "GingerGuards".

"With the progress on Chapter 5, I'm feeling confident that once Chapter 3 and 4 come out, the release schedule for the following chapters will be a lot smoother!! It's still going to take a good while to get there, but once we do, you'll never have to wait so long for a Chapter ever again!"

Why does Toby think this?

"(I'll try to give another update in September!)"

Well, that's good to know.

Fanon Sans: Barely ever make jokes or has fun, always serious, huge mysterious dark side behind his very non-subtle depression, never hangs out with anyone.

Every Undertale fan ever
Nah there's a canon Sans and a fanon Sans. Canon Sans has infinitely more depth, nuance, and character depth than what the fans seem to interpret out of him. He is a very laidback and chill guy who is much more akin to the funny uncle with some issues than an edgy depressed teenager which is how the fanbase seems to interpret him.

I will never trust any Undertale fans' attempt at separating fanon Sans from canon Sans. 99% of the time their interpretation of canon Sans is just their own fanon. Every fanon vs canon meme is like that, without fail.

UT/DR is among the fandoms who are intricately tied to fan content and fanon being intricately intertwined with canon in their minds. For better and worse.

You used a Discord link for that?

Here.

There are alternatives like Imgur & Postimg. Discord links, as I'm sure you know, expire outside of Discord after 12 hours.

I used Postimg & set it to expire in 24 hours. Still longer than Discord, but by using a site like this, I have the choice to make it expire after a timer.

Fanon=believing things about the character that aren't true or aren't confirmed. Assuming Sans IS Gaster's son is fanon albeit implied by evidence, among other things. Sans having "magic genitalia" is fanon (and also weird but that's just me). Assuming Chara is an absolute chocolate maniac when they only mentioned it once in the entire game is fanon. Papyrus' favorite food being spaghetti and spaghetti being the only thing he makes is also fanon and blatantly untrue. And so on. There are objectively canon aspects of a character and their personality, and some nuances and implications that can be speculated upon, fanon is everything beyond that, which either adds or changes aspects of a character's personality, appearance, and capabilities, as well as wrong interpretations of a character's personality that are simply unfitting within the game's actual story. Some canon vs. fanon memes are like that but you're being silly if you think "no one" has the correct interpretation of Sans' character, or any other known UT's character, for that matter.

Sort of? I mean yeah there are some theories and idea that are mentioned and explored so much in the fanbase that at some point people confused fanon with canon. At one point I forgot that "The Void" isn't an actual canon thing in Undertale, just a fanbase addition based on the realm where Gaster was in tandem with the whole dark thing (which we now know was referring to Deltarune).

He's trolling lol.

Sorry. I've been in the fandom for over a decade. I see I'm in the presence of younglings.
Besides the fact that the game hasn't even been out for a decade, I don't see what relevance this has. I was in the UT fandom for the bulk of its prime popularity. Back when people made viral Undertale Vines and Undertale comics were running rampant.

Anyways, what was the reason as to why DT toriel is not together with asgore? Did he do a stereotypical cop move on somebody?

We don’t know yet, but it’s kinda implied to be related to whatever’s going on with Dess. Knowing Asgore my guess is he acted in anger and did something really stupid during the investigation, which caused a rift to grow between him and Toriel.

Checking elsewhere (I don't wanna try to find the footage of someone checking the papers on the wall.), it's something like this:

(You skimmed a news article about Undyne.)
New Police Chief Undyne's Explosive Debut ... passionate young rookie... becomes the new police chief.
Though energetic, it may be hard to live up to the legacy...
... after Asgore Dreemurr was removed from the force...
(... there's no need to read any more.)

That should be the in-game text, more or less.
Beyond that, a lot of people do suspect it involves Dess.

Though it's strange, because the article implies Asgore left the force while still having a good reputation, suggesting why he left didn't seem like a bad mark to most others, or at least, to whoever wrote the articles.

So it would seemingly have to be something that he, &/or Toriel would be upset about; We don't know his own stance, nor exactly why Toriel's upset with him.
