Question about Constantine

I'm getting ready to start reading Constantine from the beginning because I think he's cool. Quick question though.

Is the Vertigo comics and theh Pre-Flashpoint DC comics the same character in the same continuity or is Vertigo like an elseworlds version? DC database has the Vertigo and New Earth pages of him seperate while this counts them as the same character which one is it? I don't know anything about Vertigo other than DC merged with them and Wildstorm when New 52 happened.
