Is this Existence Erasure?

There is this weapon that is described as being able to erase things and when it zaps any object, it poofs it away without a trace. When this weapon zapped a bunch of students they similarly poofed away but something else also happened. The students faded away from a picture of themselves Back to the future style the moment they were erased.

Does this imply the weapon had EE'd them?
