This isn't the first time someone asked this question. It was asked before here.
Here are the articles from the developers themselves confirming its canonicity, claiming it to be a true orthodox sequel and stating it takes place between DMC3 and DMC1 (You need to use Translate from Chinese to English, articles are in Chinese). Even the story shows DMC3 having taken place before the game, where Pluto states that Dante can't save his brother Vergil with just words alone, and Dante reminisces about how he lost Vergil to the Demon World.
