Vs battles wiki pet peeves

Current pet peeve: When people so clearly aren't arguing from a position of wanting accuracy, but from wanting their favorite characters/verses to be as strong as possible or win a Versus Match no matter what.

Like, it's so clear, but appeal to motive fallacy and all...
And even normalize that everyone acts like that 🙉

So Poe's Law is essentially when without any input from the creator of the statement, certain takes can be incredibly difficult to tell on whether or not the author is sarcastic or not

For example just by looking at the title of the following thread, can you tell if it's a CRT or an F&G thread?

F&G

I really want verses to get blog posts that are semi-respect threads that would make evaluating the power of the verse easier than having to run through 5 profiles' scaling chains to understand wtf is even going on. With some degree of separation between calculations and actual in-universe statements. Addressing anti-feats would be cool too.

Sometimes I'd get confused when people speak of multiple light speed feats or a character saying light speed is low, and then I'd only find that the character is talking about an attack that happened to be calculated at light speed.
And, not to denounce the veracity of the calculation or anything, but there is a clear difference between a clear cut feat and a rating from a calculation.

the feat can be much more impressive than the actual calc btw... Like for example someone accidently falls over and destroys a mountain... Yee the calculation would give him around mountain lvl ap but the feat is like 1 percent of his power kinda

Same with dodging light speed... One can dodge one effortlessly barely trying and the Calc can be 90% Light speed but clearly the person is much faster than that via being shown the character effortlessly dodging it

Yeah I suppose, it always goes both ways were a little exploration can result to a discovery that a character or a feat is either less impressive or more impressive than a calculation.
Though I think in this case that would be highlighted in the profile in the first place. Like "At least X-Y (Bro is using 0.0000000000001% of his power)"

don't know if I remember incorrectly but I don't think it's allowed to use at least to a calculation, only scaling and stuff 🤔 but not too sure

I've been unsealed.

Anyways you wanna know what really grinds my gears?
The latest new members that have been joining. There's this weird mix of people who either think everything is corrupt and wank or corrupt and downplay. It kinda goes to show that vsbw is more of a mix of both somewhat heightened and lowered tiers but in the end it just really annoys me.
This seems like a case that they're not fully used to the site standards yet

I mean thats kind of our reputation in the powerscaling community in general. Ask a server on discord or r/powerscaling and they'll tell you that we downplay everything to oblivion because their favourite character is totally 1-A with Immeasurable speed i swear. But if you ask someone on r/character rant they'll probably tell you that we wank everyone to high heaven and then go on a rant about how Kratos caps at wall level

VSBW is publicly known of a great deal more than most other powerscaling sources, which leads me to two conclusions about the public perception:
  • Every fault is believed to be the end of the world, because the foremost site on this sort of thing is backing it
  • They don't know how bad it can get with other powerscaling sources
I try not to fault them too much for it. They'll figure it out, or they won't.

VSBW is hated by many other powerscaling sources, maybe even most of them. One will say that vsbw will wank the hell out of everything and the other will say we're actually super duper downplaying everything. There's no good side to it all as you either high-ball and oppose downplayers or low-ball and oppose wankers, as neutrality gets you fire from both sides in this case.

Even then, I've seen this site be more serious and honest with how they handle information and research than most battleboarding sites

That is true and I ain't saying it doesn't. I'd rather have this site than places where people give character 1-A for having something to do with concepts and/or places where people go ape over the thought of non-scientifically accurate FTL speed existing

I would say that there are significant degree of valid criticism and disdain that this site receives.

It is also true that there's also a degree of simple misunderstanding or subjective differences that are unavoidable.

This is not including those who simply think some (or all) aspects of powerscaling or battleboarding culture are dumb.

I'm sure even the people in this forum experiences these things above.

But there are also those who hate VSBW, some of them being former members who got banned, riding the hate train of those above reasons and drumming it up even further. The oldheads of this website should know of one particular individual who used to be very active in this site in all facets, even with calculations, who got banned and has been leading some sort of crusade against the site for many years. The spite of being banned conveniently hidden within legitimate criticisms.

I would say that wikia websites are held under a far more rigid standards than others, and VSBW for all its flaws is still simply better than most others. Other wikis aren't as strictly moderated.
And anyone who is aware of the flaws of this wiki would know what that means for a battleboarding wiki.

Problems are inevitable in a community-based forum, it's good that the wiki survived after cycling over staff members that periodically hires bad apples (or apples that eventually rotted over time for one reason or another).

Honestly it isn't that they can hire some bad apples from time to time, that just happens in some communities, but it's that they don't really do anything about them.
I wont name any examples of staff or regular members that should go, but you certainly know some examples already.
I think it's important to keep those members out mainly because it gives the site a bad reputation to have them around, and this site is sort of meant to be a hobby that can take your mind off all the corruption, violence, etc. in the real world, which doesn't work if we have some of that in the forum/wiki it self.
And keep in mind this isn't me having a grudge against the staff or anything, because there's a lot of members that are staff that I like (Propellus, Grath, and Hoppington although he retired), but it's just my objective opinion, and I'm not the only one that thinks this either.

I frequent Characterrants, its like half a hour of my day everyday and 50% of the current hate VSB gets on there is just... Outtaded stuff regurated like it just happened yesterday. VSB is still the "Dimensions = power" wanker in their eye, even though that practice died nearly 5 years ago. They still posts scientific papers on the proper definitions of dimensions, fighting a dog we already took behind the shed half a decade ago.

Yes, they also have legitimate grievances with us, they hate the way video games are powerscaled on here. God beware you mention Persona profiles there. But they are fighting ghosts of the pasts way too often.

Let's be real here, they're probably trying to farm karma anyways.
I absolutely hate how they will go through like 10 logical jumps instead of just accepting that FTL feats exist without scientific accuracy. They will downplay literally anything, often don't understand or don't accept the existence of outliers.
Some of their rants about actual character writing are interesting but the whole powerscaling side of things there is very silly.

The thing is some people reject dimensions entirely, and VSBW still employs that in the current tiering system.
I do think some of the prominent posters in that subreddit are pretentious, pseudo-intellectuals though, even if I also do understand how pseudo-intellectuals flock over Tier 1. They're two sides of the same coin, really.
It's the same thing with calculations. There's a little bit of truth here and there, as there is hypocrisy and lack of reason.

And some reject the notion of anything beyond universal in its entirety as well

Yes we do still use "dimensions" but its not the term but the definition that grants a tier. And only because its fiction itself that made the connotation of higher existance with dimensions, even if its scientificly inaccurate, because shocker, writers are rarely scientists themselve and tend to write outta their ass.

But ultimately, a legitimate high 1b verse could swap dimensions with candyland and still be high 1b, because it dosnt matter how its cosmological structure is named, which is a concept most anti dimensions rants seems to struggle living with.

If the whole deal was a semantic argument though then sure, there is a good dialoge possible

On another note I actually really disagree with the current way we scale videogame speed. I feel way to often the limits of the game engine are used to massively over inflate the speed of a character. Obviously most old game engines couldn't render or chose not to render bullets/lightning/light at their normal speed simply because it's impossible to do so and so they settle with making it viewable and possibly dodge able in game. A few good examples I found were this and this. There are probably dozens more examples of stuff like this in the wiki and many profiles make huge jumps in speed based off of calcs like these. I feel the only time game speeds should be allowed to be used to find speed are instances where the game literally has mechanics built around dodging or blocking certain projectiles, or in cutscenes. A great example of the first is in Sekiro where it's a game mechanic that your able to block and parry bullets fired from muskets. In that case it's fair to assume that the developers intended for you to have bullet tier speed otherwise they wouldn't have put it in the game in the first place. A great example of cutscenes justifying speed tiers is Metal Gear Rising where they show Sam cutting bullets in cutscenes. Once again in that case it's fair to assume that they have that level of speed since a cutscene free of the games engine limitations still shows them being able to perform said feat which means the devs intended for them to be that fast.

Well I'm not sure if I really agree with that mindset. Going by this same logic, the fact that they made bullets/lightning/light able to be dodged would show an intent for the player character to be at such speeds, wouldn't it? On the contrary to what you're saying, I don't think using game limitations to disqualify certain kinds of feats is exactly appropriate.

Also the Breath of the Wild example doesn't exactly hold up given that Link has a Relativistic feat from intercepting a Guardian's laser in an Age of Calamity cutscene

And also say… 😃 stop taking it too seriously, it’s not meant to be taken that way, the creator didn’t even think about that (even when there’s evidence and is blatantly a feat that they did meant to be taken as such)
