Usage of Held Items in Pokemon-Esque Verse

so im currently scaling a verse known as monsters of etheria. and it uses "held items" and the like. though unlike pokemon, you seemingly play is wild monsters who can equip these despite not having a trainer. that being said, would they be able to use them as option equipment?

I don't know why not. We often give Pokemon profiles held items they can be found to be holding when encountered in the wild as Equipment, IIRC.
& if the monsters are technically player characters, equipment they can use but not always have seems reasonable to be Optional Equipment, AFAIK, although IDK the full context. If there's some reason an item might be unreasonable for them to have/use, that's likely worth taking into account, too.

the idea is simply; you play as the monsters, and can come across and equip the items as them
