The Eternal Conflict has it's origins long before the creation of Planet Earth. Each world has it's own representatives of Light, or Darkness. Light is the source of law and order, and is also the source of power for the light emotions and abilities of mortals. Love, compassion, mercy, honor and all that is good comes from The Light. Darkness means chaos, disorder, power mongering, greed, revenge, and all that is evil. The year is, well, that's complicated. Everything in this world has happened as it has in our world, up until this very day. Well time lines and the multiverse are weird and hard to properly explain. Let's just say that magic and the paranormal are all real and leave it at that, for now.
To understand our problem we must go back to the beginning. Long before the Bronze Age collapse, the collapse of Sumerian civilization and thus, all history as we know it, even before the Primeval Age, this world's era of "Sword and Sorcery", which inspired Robert E. Howard. It was an era of the infancy of Atlantis, eons ago. There, young Zeus, and other men or women later known as deities were born. Zeus was King of one of the many regions of Atlantis. Atlantis it'self was only five hundred years old. Zeus ruled his cities with Hera, a powerful goddess like woman in her own right.
Elsewhere on that continent were be the Mabinogi, the Tuatha De Naan, and the Nemetondevos, Celtic deities, and yes, the gods of who would be the Scandinavians. Many of the ancient gods were mortals, or at least, tangible people who walked among mortals in the cities or wilderness of Atlantis.
Yes, it was one fateful day when a wicked terror began to prey on mortal and immortal alike for their life's essence. It, he, or she was the first vampire. This lord of the undead had command over the night creatures, the demons, and other undead and vampires. Atlantis was nearly culled in it's infancy from this menace. However it was Zeus, Odin, and the others that did the culling, of the Night Creatures. To the people's relief, the mightiest of the land's heroes, sages and champions purged Atlantis.
However, the story does not end there.
It was Camelot, in the year 435. Merlin had long advised Arthur in his dealings of both the mundane customs of the rural folk, medicine, and magic. However, sinister whispers began to tempt Morgana, Merlin's best student, and Mordred, Arthur's loyal uncle, into overthrowing Camelot for good, seizing Merlin's library, and ruling the British Isles as the Demon Queen. Merlin and Arthur were betrayed, Camelot fell, and many of it's great achievements were destroyed, setting England and the British Isles back one thousand years. Morgana and Mordred themselves met with a grisly fate.
Then Romania, in the year 1477, middle aged Vladimir Tepes, Son of the Dragon had met his end in battle against the Turks. His coffin was found, not first by mere mortals, but by a wicked creature of the dark. Through necromancy, Vlad's body was restored, and the blood of the vampire now flowed through his veins. Dracula, most powerful vampire in thousands of years rose from the dead, and escaped his coffin, now roaming the countrysides of the world for centuries.
Finally, the year was 2100. Mankind had finally officiated relations with extra terrestrial races, and began to explore well outside our solar system. Various planets of our own had been colonized in Sol, and it seemed all was well. We had barely avoided wiping ourselves out, and it seemed times of endless prosperity were on the horizon.
The Darkness will fall again. Once more, the Light must shine!
