Question about time travel and time reversal.

I've heard, that if someone travel back in time, he in reality don't travel to past, but rather goes to the different timeline (Trunk from DBZ and characters from MCU). Similar case is with Bites the Dust (JoJo).

But, it is necessary? Can't they just travel in time with their own timeline? How exactly this works?

It works as the autbor want it to work, travel in time may case the timeline to split (DB), changing it may chage/erase stuff in the present (Back to the Future) or simply changing the past may be impossible (Pre-Null Valiant).
