Are souls really what we see as souls? I mean, it's emphasized that they are superior to monster souls because they are mostly comprised of water, as opposed to a kind of non-corporeal matter. In fact, I'm betting that it's just more 4th wall breaking, being that it's just a representation of your body.

Water thing is for the bodies, not souls.

I personally think that the physical body and the soul are separate. Otherwise, Asgore's soul containment things would have had people and not hearts in them on the Overworld. Furthermore, Boss Monster souls are stated (I think in Waterfall or the True Lab) to persist for a time after death like a Human soul, and both Toriel and Asgore's souls persist after they die and turn to dust, solidifying that your soul and your actual body are two separate things. Whether or not this removes their soul manipulation is up for debate,
