My Hero Academia General Discussion Thread #18

Uhm, no. That's not how twists tend to come out, at least from my experience. Even though their behaviors have been revealed to have been false there would have to be certain characteristics and behaviors that would stay with the person who managed to succeed in deceiving. Hakagure could have been established to be a cunning individual capable of stealth operations for any team she'd be on that could give them the win in almost any situation. I mean she'd have to have been, she had an invisibility quirk and was working for AFO, you'd think that would allow her show off her capabilities even as far back as the USJ attack while dropping a small hint of her actual plans. Give her another moment at the Sports Festival, or if not then have her join a work study together with Ochaco/Tsuyu so she'd have her eye on Deku, or whoever, while keeping a distance. There'd have been at least a handful of chances to establish her as a competent individual who'd have what it takes to be a hero, again because she was a literal spy, like everyone else in the class and pull the rug under once everything has been put in place. Would much of her character have been removed? Yes, but some of her characterization would also have been preserved. Now we got next to nothing from her.
The purpose of her character is not to show whether or not she's good at pretending to be a hero, but rather to be a spy. If it was obvious from the start that she perfectly fit the candidate of a traitor/spy and was competent in doing so... It would've made the reveal way more obvious and predictable. This is why Horikoshi probably didn't develop her character at all. In fact, she wouldn't really make that great of a hero. She probably got into U.A by cheating. This really wouldn't do anything to affect the impact of her reveal, tbh. Oh? Hagakure would have been proven as a cunning individual? Something that could be proven/addressed after her reveal??? That's your argument? In that case, I think you should just be patient with the story.

At this point, I'm wondering if you're just trolling me with how ridiculous of an argument this is.

I didn't like it either but what else was bad about it?
I saw some people say they wanted Toga to speak about Twice this chapter.

Some were also complaining that Shigaraki hasn't mentioned Twice's death.

Others were saying the chapter should have gone straight to the students training.

There's also complaints that Bakugo had more lines than Deku this chapter.

I've seen all manner of complaints about the chapter on Twitter and especially Reddit.

Since when were Twitter and Reddit good places to check... anything, really?

1) Twice died over a year (70 chapters) ago and the villains already knew what happened and grieved. They moved on from his death for more important matters. I guess people couldn't remember anything that happened for the life of them.

2) Same as above.

3) I agree, actually. It would have been a nice chance to explore what Class 1-A thought of the crisis that was ahead of them and them trying to make sense of the world while they train hard to be the ones to give people a sense of hope. And since it was stated that the Class was training while Deku and All Might were away, it would have been a good opportunity to do just that.

4) They just hate Bakugou.

5) Stay away from them.

Your first mistake was looking at Twitter.

Hagakure may not be the only traitor, I've been suspecting her and Aoyama for several weeks now, since they didn't say anything at all when Class 1-A rescued Deku.

Hagakure and Aoyama were the only ones in the USJ Attack who don't appear or even do something, with Hagakure saying she was with Todoroki (even though he froze all his surroundings and never noticed her), and Aoyama, who said it was "secret" whatever he was doing.

It was Hagakure herself who suggested Class 1-A to go to a Mall, where Shigaraki would threaten Deku, how did Shigaraki know that Deku would be there?

And finally, AFO says he has "friends", in plural.

Maybe the last panel and the clues were actually red herrings and Toru was actually confronting the real traitor of U.A. We'll see though.

People really do come up with all manner of criticisms about Hori.

This plot point was never gonna get addressed without AFO since he's the one directly connected to it. This is the most organic time to use the plot point since unless people's memories are short, AFO has been in jail from Kamino up to Tartarus escape which was 1 or 2 months ago in universe.

The League and Shigaraki never even showed the inkling that they knew who the
traitor
was.

Now people are talking about organic or the plot should have been handled earlier. When? And how? Now is the optimal time. And now is also the time AFO is actually out of prison since the end of the first act. Now is also the time the villains are actually strong enough.

What's the point of the
traitor revealing themselves
before AFO was out? What could they even achieve back when Hero Society was so robust? Even if they
helped Shigaraki and the League back then
the villains were too weak to take any possible advantage of the situation.

Shigaraki didn't become a big threat till MVA, same for Twice. And immediately after, he went into the pod and came out for war arc.

Before that the league were weaklings that would have been stomped by the heroes no matter what help they got.

Even Ujiko didn't help them till they and Shigaraki himself proved himself.

Shigaraki didn't know Izuku was at the mall, he was just as shocked that he ran into him. Even when he was by himself his eyes widen and we see an exclamation mark above his head. He had no idea Izuku was there, and the mall was just a freak coincidence that happened while he left to brood over Stain.

Shigaraki was complaining about Stain, he didn't go to the mail to find Izuku nor did he want to talk to him until he saw him.

Aoyama is a coward and wouldn't admit he was hiding in fear. Since that what he did when the villains attack, and what he did during the license exam until Iida found him. Aoyama is somewhat unlikely, considering we've seen internal dialogue of him wanting to stop the League of Villains, and he ended up attacking Mr Compress in the end. However I never thought it was completely impossible for Aoyama to be the traitor.

And the traitor is a AFO thing, and he was likely the one that told the LoV where the training camp was taking place. I also don't think there is simply one, I'm certain there will be some no names causing a ruckus as well. But regardless, I don't believe the traitor was working for the LoV, only AFO himself.

So just having thoughts against the LoV doesn't set anything in stone.

Tooru was the best choice here, since we basically got nothing on her, which made her super obvious for fans. Watch all of this be another red herring and she isn't a traitor, it'll be another new character..

I hope there is an adult
traitor
too like a teacher for example.
Someone like Vlad or Power Loader or Ectoplasm. Even if not them, there are other teachers who aren't focused on much like the pink haired teacher.

I've always personally thought Vlad would be the traitor if it wasn't a student. I consider it is still possible for him to be working with AFO, and honestly I'd prefer it if he was. Just cause I don't see him getting any spotlight otherwise. He was out of harm way during the training camp, and could've told AFO were it took place in advance.

While the students like Tooru only knew where it was when they arrived. Though it's also just as likely that Tooru told them, since we don't see the LoV arrive until night time.

I could never see Vlad being the traitor because why would he instantly slam Dabi against a wall hard enough to crack it without knowing if he’s a double or not? I don’t think he’d even know what a Double would he since Twice had JUST joined the team pretty much during that arc. Then Dabi also threatened to burn Vlad alive.

Either they’re really dumb or REALLY committed to keeping the secret.

Because the LoV doesn't know who the traitor is, I highly doubt even Shigaraki knew. They are AFO's "friend", and Vlad was in front of the students. He'd be really stupid to not attack Dabi in front of so many people. AFO has people inside, Shigaraki lacks the skills to convince someone to work with him and spy on the inside.

Even if they know about the traitor, Vlad would know that Dabi isn't after any of the kids there. Nothing says the traitor wouldn't know about Twice, we don't know when Twice joined, we only know that Muscular was the newest member. Twice could've join a week after Dabi was introduced to Shigaraki, which gives him over a month of time.

Not saying Vlad is 100% the traitor, but he fits just as well as Tooru.... excluding the recent chapter for obvious reasons. Tooru was also put into critical condition because of Mustard's Quirk, so even her being the traitor has her being hurt by the LoVs. Unless stated otherwise, I believe only AFO knew who the traitors are.

Vigilantes Japanese chapter. Translations should be put later in the day.

Such a cool transformation

I wish there were more transformations in overall MHA.

Did he... become a living explosion?

For real, though, what else was the problem with the chapter?
ok so 1.Toga ,Horikoshi really dropped the whole plot of toga running away from the league, 2.Nobody cares about Twices death apparently, 3. We could have gotten a whole mini arc with the students training and could have fleshed out their feeling about war and stuff

1) Kind of forgot Toga was away from the L.O.V. I do think that Hori could have taken the opportunity and have her go solo so we'd get a little bit of extra depth to her personality. Hell, he should have had her attend the gathering at U.A. and witnessed Ochaco's speech to everyone about Izuku's despair and get her perspective on what's happening. She could, even, have run into Stain when he was away from All Might. So yeah, I agree with you there.

2) I already made my stance on it and bears little repeating.

3) I agree, absolutely. This is another example of Horikoshi missing the chance to develop his side characters. I get that Deku is important, but so are his classmates. The chapters where they did their best to get him back to U.A. attempt to present them as folks who are essential to Midoriya regaining stability in his life. I say attempt because I have had a handful problems with how they dealt with Class 1-A's relationship with Deku after the Cultural Festival. In this chapter, Hori chose to have them mention that they were training the whole time rather than actually bring their experiences and perspective to light. There's a common phrase when it comes to this: show, don't tell.

We have no clue how they felt about society collapsing around them, about the swathes of heroes who decided to quit and them wondering if they should stop too, about whether they felt comfortable with Endeavor being a hero at all, or even them discussing in length how they felt about Izuku leaving them behind. So many things were scrubbed out of the way to provide a shorter, more simplistic story that, while very far from "bad," makes certain aspects of the story feel very unearned and bizarre such as Jirou thanking Izuku for that time he lent her a pen when she was trying to convince him that he should calm down when he was trying to save society from tearing itself apart at the seams. Almost as though the two never spoke with one another after the fact. These are just a few examples, but they definitely show Kohei's problem with developing side characters in a meaningful way.

I feel as if both of you are jumping the gun with the 3rd point. We wouldn't get a 1 week buffer if we were not getting some type of short training arc.

And unlike many people I just don't see the next fight with Shigaraki that's literally happening in a week as the final battle.

What do you mean by all this?

Is there a 1 week buffer coming after this chapter or did it happen before? Even if we'd get a short training arc soon, it wouldn't magically mend the numerous chances and opportunities Horikoshi chose to not take in developing his characters for just about a year now. And how would anyone know that? We can't just baselessly assume there'd be such an arc coming just because a buffer might be on the way. Who knows what Horikoshi actually wants to do with the story?

Who said that the fight with Shigaraki would happen next week? So many things are not put together just yet and a lot of details have yet to be explained. And there is speculation that the fight with the LOV wouldn't even be the final one. Why does this point even matter? We weren't talking about him in the third point. What was it that made you bring it up?
