Expand "function"

Does anyone here know how this works?

I've seen some threads here and there in the past that had a pull down menu with the word saying "expand" where clicking it shows the text that's in it and clicking expand again undoes it by closing it.

Anyone know the special code text or whatever for this? Basically, what is the function used to expand and unexpand hidden text is what I'm trying to ask.
