Earthquakes caused from Molecular change?

I was wondering, is the method for getting the energy of Earthquake any different from molecular alterations any different from normal conventional Earthquake methods? For context, it is an Earthquake felt across a planet that is a noticeable shaking, enough to lift rocks off the ground.

Thoughts?
