Do we need to prove a verse doesn't have souls? If so, what does that proof look like?

Exactly what the question says.

What kind of proof is needed to say a verse likely doesn't have souls?

Is it enough for characters themselves to not believe in souls? Or to question the existence of any kind of afterlife?

Or do we need to have some kind of godly or narrative figure flat-out say "souls don't exist"?

The issue here is that if proof is needed, you literally have to prove a negative, which never works out.

Depends of what kind of verse this is

A verse with only machine should not be assumed to have souls for example.

For the most part yeah we assume they have souls. Since it's not like chakra where it's a distinct concept and unique.

The Idea of Soul is incredible consistent across all media.

How dare you imply that my computer lacks a soul?

For real, is pretty hard but if some god or sage says that, or stuff like spiritual realms aren't a thing, it gets easier to make an argument

Well the God of the setting or Narrative saying it is helpful, but any characters who seems knowledgeable enough on the subject can be trusted if we don't have any reason to believe they are not saying the truth.
