CH Speed Downgrade

After thinking things through a bit more, I decided that CH needs a reaction speed downgrade. Subsonic feats for CH are performed through anticipatory response (based on procedural learning), so the issue is that it would only work at a Subsonic level with specific conditions.

This is because procedural learning works by unconciously reading/memorizing body/movement cues and the best responses to them, so it works only on what you train against/for. The brain can then automatically retrieve that response when necessary and execute it without need for concious thought.

CH is a master of all human martial arts, sports, and skills, so against any opponent with a human-like body type or against a ballistic projectile he would indeed be able to react at subsonic speeds. However, make him fight anything else and CH's reactions would degrade.

I would suggest instead giving him the Instinctive Reactions skill and then just keeping combat speed as Superhuman.

Basically, this has to do with how our brains function when reacting to high speed movements. Did you know that pro sportspeople/fighters/gamers generally don't have what we consider to be extremely fast reaction speeds? At best they're above average at worst they're slightly slower.

For instance, Desmond Douglas, a ping pong player who was considered to have the fastest reactions during the 1980s, was given a simple reaction test where he had to hit a button whenever a light lit up on a screen. However, the test showed that Douglas's simple reaction time was actually the slowest in the entire team, even the team manager.

This is because simple reaction time does not take into account the varying choices to different situations a sportsperson must make, but that's what actually makes the difference between a pro and an amateur. A pro has built up their procedural memory (generally refered to as muscle memory), to the point where their brain can accurately and automatically predict their opponent's planned action and execute an anticipatory response.

However, the flaw is that it only works on something you have trained against/have experience with. CH is a master of all martial arts/sports, but against something inhuman he would have little frame of reference, so his reaction speed would degrade.

This seems to make sense.

I'm not sure about this. Doesn't our CH page already specifically state that the Subsonic speed is only in specific conditions? CH is supposed to possess the skills of all humans, so he/she should be capable of reacting at subsonic speeds in specific scenarios.

Well, this seems like something akin to Aim Dodging due to extreme training for specific repeated movements.

I agree the Subsonic speed feat is similar to aim dodging. Which even normal humans can technically aim dodge speed of light lasers. SuperHuman combat speed and reactions sounds more reasonable, and Subsonic would be more perception rather than speed.

Like I said it's actually Conditional Instinctive Reaction. "Instinctive Reaction is the ability to react to oncoming attacks without the need for conscious thought. As such, those with this ability will automatically dodge and possibly counter oncoming attacks through muscle memory".

It is not Aim Dodging. Aim Dodging requires concious thought and can't adjust for variations in movement after an attack is thrown. CH's unconcious processing is faster and can actually adjust their response to be more accurate even when the target is in motion.

I suppose that seems to make sense.

Yes. That is probably fine. I will unlock the page for you. Tell me here when you are done.

No problem. Should I close this thread?
